Since the college summer backpacking trip almost 2 years ago, we’ve been hounded to do another one (well, Craig has) and this year, we’re giving in!

Join us June 28-July 1 as we head out into God’s awesome creation and conquer it! We’ll camp, backpack, chase bears and cross rivers where bridges dare not be built. It’s going to be an awesome weekend and you don’t want to miss out!

We’ll leave Oakmont on Thursday July 28 in the afternoon and stay in a hotel that night. On Friday morning we’ll start our trek which will end with us returning on Sunday.

We’ll be backpacking the South Mills River Trail in Western North Carolina. (You can see a GPS map of the 12 mile trail on the back page.)

Each backpacker is responsible for their own food, gear and other necessities. Check out the lists below to see what you’ll

need and foods we suggest you bring. You’ll also need to bring money for food while traveling. The only cost you’ll pay for this trip is the hotel cost (each room will be split 4 ways, so it should be fairly inexpensive.)

Anyone who needs equipment should contact Lawrence Powers by Friday June 7. We have access to SOME gear and can hook you up! Sign-

up @oakmontcollege.com to reserve a spot and gear!

We provide the trail, you provide the

sweat.

To Bring Checklist:

• Small notebook or journal & pen• Flip flops, crocs for camp (just something to wear around camp at night)

• Any meds you take regularly• Small first aid kit (band aids, Tylenol, Advil, Gauze pads, Athletic tape, blister protection, etc.)

• Individual packaged wet wipes, baby wipes, etc. (Good for hand-washing and “bathing”)

• Personal toiletries (keep in minimal. No make-up or items with fragrance!)

• Extra clothes (We suggest 1 change of: pants/shorts, T-Shirt, 2-3 pairs of socks and 2-3 pair of underwear

• Hat or bandana• Sunscreen, bug spray• Lightweight gloves• Comfortable boots or trail shoes (break in before!)

• Rain jacket • Fleece or sweatshirt• Lightweight flashlight & batteries or headlamp• Food for meals• Eating utensils • Small Pocket knife• Small plate or bowl• Bedroll or therma-rest padding (something to go between your sleeping bag and the ground if you want some extra padding)

• A least 2 water bottles (totaling at least 64 oz) or water pouch

• Large Zip-lock bags (for trash/wet clothes, etc)• Pack cover (lg trash bag with 2 small bungie cords will work)

• Trash bags (for your sleeping bag and trash)• Steak and potato for Thursday dinner

Trail Food Suggestions

• Protein/Energy bars (Clif, Powerbar, Luna, Balance, etc. - you may want to get a few to try before the trip, some are good, some are gross)

• Granola bars or loose granola• Peanuts, almonds, etc.• Trail mix (buy some or just mix your own)• Rasins• Fruits - apples, oranges, etc.• Hard Bread (bagels, english muffins, etc)• Beef Jerky, turkey jerky, smoked meats• Prepackaged tuna, chicken, etc. (meat in flat packages that doesn’t require refrigeration, just be sure to pack zippered plastic bags to store trash in, the leftover packages really smell!)

• Peanut M&Ms• Tootsie rolls, caramels, Hard Candies• Dried fruits• Fruit rolls or fruit by the foot, fruit leathers• Peanut butter, in ziploc bags or squeezable container

• Sunflower seeds and other seeds• Crackers, melba toast, pretzels, or bagel chips. (Place in hard plastic container)

• Fruit Newtons• Hot cocoa and cider mix (great around the fire at night!)

• Instant Oatmeal or grits for breakfast, ramen noodles too

• Instant Mac & Cheese... anything you just add hot water to will make a good hot breakfast or lunch food

• Freeze dried meats, etc for dinners (buy in camping section at Walmart or other stores)

• More suggestions & food prep instructions @oakmontcollege.com!

@OBC

New Year, New Schedule, New EngageWe had a great year at Engage during the 2011-12 school year and made many great memories. In an effort to make next year even better, we’ve started kicking around an idea to create a “Engage Meeting” every Sunday night. Community is important and we (the student leadership team & college min. staff) feel that this will help us keep connected regularly. This schedule also would put our small groups on Sunday nights so that students can be involved with Engage but will not have to choose between the events at OBC and week-day events with campus ministries. Note: we’ll still have our regular fellowship events throughout the year!

Possible schedule:

10am - Sunday School Discussion Time (MU700)11am - Emerge Worship Service12pm - Indulge Free College Lunch

6-6:30pm - Fellowship/Hang-out time @OBC [snacks, music, etc.]6:30pm-7:15ish pm - Worship [with worship band leading this time]7:15ish-8:30ishpm - Small groups [held @OBC or @Oakmont Square or in the community]

In order for this new schedule to work we’ll need some help from you (the students) with hanging-out, participating/leading the worship time and many other things. (Email or fb Lawrence if you are interested!)

We want to know what you think about the new schedule idea... email Lawrence with your thoughts or suggestions @ [email protected].

ARTICLES WORTH READING

@relevantmagazine.comEvangelism Without Additives by Jim HendersonIf the gospel really is good news, why do most Christians avoid evangelism? Why is “witnessing” often a negative experience, for both the sender and receiver? Wouldn’t it be great if you could communicate the good news without having to become a spiritual salesperson? Evangelism can be as normal as asking great questions and paying attention to the people Jesus misses most. It involves doing things you already do, but with a little more intentionality. Just by being yourself and becoming unusually interested in others, you can discover that people will ask you about Jesus.

This isn’t another program or pitch. It’s a handbook on how to make real connections with the people formerly known as lost.

Think of it as evangelism for the rest of us.

Cheap Summer Reading SuggestionsWe know the last thing you want to do over the summer is read but if you have some extra time

and want a good book, check these out!

I Would Die For You by Brent & Deanna Higggins“I Would Die For You” tells the powerful story of BJ Higgins and proves that life can be so much more than we sometimes make it. BJ's life was one of passionate service to God and to other people. After a six-week battle with an infection contracted on the mission field, BJ's earthly life was over--he was only 15 years old.

I Would Die for You tells BJ's inspiring story. It combines the writing of parents Brent and Deanna Higgins with selections from BJ's journals, school papers, and blog, along with true stories from family members, church and hospital staff, and friends. Stirring and full of encouragement, I Would Die for You is poised to inspire a new generation of believers to give their lives in God's service.
