An invitation to grow in mind, body and spirit.2011August - December

it is TIME.

get INVOLVED.

make a COMMITMENT.

wo months ago, I journeyed to the village of Tshikaji in Congo. Everything there is broken: the government, schools, hospitals, commerce, transportation, sanitation, water, electricity…even the post office. What is not broken are the hearts of its people.

Each day in Congo can be overwhelming. It would be easy to justify abandoning the ship. But the Congolese people never give up and neither should we. Christ has not left Congo. Christ does not give up on people who are broken and lost. Christ does not forsake those who have sinned, nor does he neglect those who are sick. Neither should we. The values of Christ are different from the values of the world. The church empowers us, as Christians, to live in the world in a counter-cultural way. Anybody can say they are Christians when the sun is shining and five-star treatment is in place. It is what we do when it is difficult that makes the difference.

Everything in this edition of Engage is about equipping you for the work of ministry. Take a course, read a book, teach a class, serve in an outreach ministry, sing in the choir, invest your time with children or youth. Do something to nurture your faith and to strengthen your stamina as a Christian in the world.

Remember the faith and example of our Congolese brothers and sisters. They demonstrate daily that ministry is where you find the very presence of God.

Allow us to care for your infant, toddler and two-year-old during worship by bringing them to the age-appropriate room (p. 14). Children, three years of age to transitional kindergarten, may participate in WeeWorship at the 11 a.m. service. Have your child join you in worship and wait for them to be called up front and excused (see bulletin for details).

Welcome to our church! These stone walls house a warm family ready and willing to nurture you on your spiritual journey. Whether you are single, married with children, a teen, or a senior, Myers Park Presbyterian has a place for you to serve and grow. If you have any questions before or after the service, please ask a host stationed at the entrances.

Join us in the sanctuary for our traditional worship service or in Oxford Hall for Celebrate, a time of praise and worship in a contemporary setting.

Discover the diverse Sunday School and growth opportunities for infants through adults on the following pages: Preschool & Children, p. 14; Youth, p. 17; Adults, p. 21.

Gain insight from national speakers in this four-part series designed to help enrich your faith and the life of your family. This partnership between Myers Park Presbyterian and three other local churches includes dual events throughout the year for youth and their parents. The goal: building community and experiencing the power of the larger body of Christ. The cost is $50 for all four sessions. Register at www.myersparkpres.org/parents.

Sept. 25, Understanding the Teenage Brain, Roger NishiokaExplore why teen brains are ruled by emotion and adults by logic; pinpoint how to help your teen thrive during a time of complex neural development; and discover how you and your youth can improve communications and open channels for feedback. This fascinating seminar will be led by a noted Columbia Seminary professor.

Nov. 20, Re-Wired, Pamela Mitchell-Legg Explore the tsunami of messages, ideas and instant communication that is transforming your teen and society as a whole. Learn the right way to partner with your child in navigating social media. Feb. 10, Almost Christian, Kendra Kreasy DeanTake a look at why many youth feel Christianity does not make a difference. Together we will examine how to move from the “gospel of niceness” to a passionate faith, ridding ourselves of a shrink-wrapped Christian identity and truly living the gospel.

April 15, Faithful Families, Mark DevriesDiscover why the real measure of your youth's faith is not attendance, the number of "mountaintop experiences" or sheer zealousness. Instead we will discuss how to build a partnership between teen, family and church—the foundation of a lifelong, mature faith.

3RD THURSDAYS OF THE MONTH, SEPT. 15-APRIL 19, 12:30 P.M., PARLOR

Explore the spiritual, moral and theological issues that emerge from these great reads in a monthly lunchtime book club with Executive Pastor Millie Snyder. Come to one or all as we enjoy

a wide range of thought-provoking books. Each month's discussion is open to church members and friends. No registration is necessary. Bring your lunch. Tea and water provided.

Catching Genius by Kristy Kiernan – Sept. 15

Explore family and forgiveness in this moving novel—the author’s fictional debut. Estella and Connie are sisters who grew apart in childhood and have not spoken in nearly a decade. Now in their 40s, they have been asked to set aside their differences and ready the family’s Gulf Coast home for sale.

Whale Man by Alan Parker – Oct. 20

Experience the follicking adventures of Avi, a student chef with the wrong girlfriend and a mud-loving dog. His world is churned up, down and sideways by a criminal conspiracy, not to mention an obsession with building a whale on his mother’s front lawn.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien – Nov. 17

Discover the blurred line between truth and reality with this great read—part memoir, part short story, and part novel. A poetic reflection on the Vietnam War, this book was a finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics’ Circle Award.

Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry – Jan. 19

Season of the Jew by Maurice Shadbolt – Feb. 16Journey with former British Lieutenant George Fairweather as he travels through 19th-century colonial New Zealand. He longs for a quiet life but finds himself defending the colonists against the rebels. This novel powerfully explores the futility of war and the rights of the conqueror and the conquered.

Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen by Susan Gregg Gilmore – March 15Arrive at the place you belong alongside Catherine Grace. She plots escape from her sleepy, one stoplight Georgia hometown at the local Dairy Queen. Once in Atlanta, however, Catherine Grace discovers her place in the world may actually be right where she began.

Emily Alone by Stewart O’Nan – April 19Immerse yourself in the world of 80-year-old Emily Maxwell who has outlived her role as wife and mother and faces a diminishing future. This warmhearted, clear-eyed portrait of Emily demonstrates how life can be both awfully long and woefully short.

See the rural world of the 20th century fade into history before this twice-widowed farmwife's very eyes. Hannah shares memories of her childhood, young love and loss, raising children and the changing seasons in the Kentucky countryside.

Every member has a ministry at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Here we serve others as disciples of Christ—not as volunteers. Why? For us, the world is our classroom, Christ is our teacher, and glorifying God is our mission. This makes the faces of discipleship unique but the experience of transformation universal. Join us and serve.

Regional

Outreach

CROSS Missions, a unique urban outreach ministry of Myers Park Presbyterian, was founded in 1999. Visiting youth groups share Christ’s love and grace with our community’s less fortunate.

Over the past 11 years, more than 5,000 people from 300 churches in 17 states have served through our CROSS Missions ministry. It is our hope that visiting churches return home and initiate similar programs to serve the needs of their communities.

Regional youth groups minister to people who are homeless, hungry, elderly, addicted, disabled, memory-impaired and children who are at-risk or living in poverty.

Study & Spirituality

Each day begins with a 30-minute worship time and a ministry site review. Evening times include devotions and reflections on the day. A closing worship service is held onThursday for summer groups; weekend groups attend the 8:45 a.m. Celebrate service.

Freedom School

Partner with the children, families and teachers of this school where over 90 percent of the children qualify for free or reduced price lunches; 37 percent speak English as a second language; and 17 percent are homeless.
