wo months ago, I journeyed to the village of Tshikaji in Congo. Everything there is broken: the government, schools, hospitals, commerce, transportation, sanitation, water, electricity…even the post office. What is not broken are the hearts of its people.

Each day in Congo can be overwhelming. It would be easy to justify abandoning the ship. But the Congolese people never give up and neither should we. Christ has not left Congo. Christ does not give up on people who are broken and lost. Christ does not forsake those who have sinned, nor does he neglect those who are sick. Neither should we. The values of Christ are different from the values of the world. The church empowers us, as Christians, to live in the world in a counter-cultural way. Anybody can say they are Christians when the sun is shining and five-star treatment is in place. It is what we do when it is difficult that makes the difference.

Everything in this edition of Engage is about equipping you for the work of ministry. Take a course, read a book, teach a class, serve in an outreach ministry, sing in the choir, invest your time with children or youth. Do something to nurture your faith and to strengthen your stamina as a Christian in the world.

Remember the faith and example of our Congolese brothers and sisters. They demonstrate daily that ministry is where you find the very presence of God.

Saints & SinnersTravel through time and “meet” eyewitnesses to Jesus' life. Each week, through this creative study, we will journey to first century Palestine and gain the perspective of an individual who knew or directly interacted with Jesus. Sound scholarship will enable us to delve into how the people of this time lived, played, worked and worshiped—a fascinating way to gain scriptural context. Rev. The Bell Rings for You: Handbells for BeginnersLearn the basics of music and ringing in this beginner class. You will have fun even if you have never played an instrument. CROSS Missions, a unique urban outreach ministry of Myers Park Presbyterian, was founded in 1999. Visiting youth groups share Christ’s love and grace with our community’s less fortunate.

Over the past 11 years, more than 5,000 people from 300 churches in 17 states have served through our CROSS Missions ministry. It is our hope that visiting churches return home and initiate similar programs to serve the needs of their communities.

Regional youth groups minister to people who are homeless, hungry, elderly, addicted, disabled, memory-impaired and children who are at-risk or living in poverty.

Study & Spirituality

Each day begins with a 30-minute worship time and a ministry site review. Evening times include devotions and reflections on the day. A closing worship service is held onThursday for summer groups; weekend groups attend the 8:45 a.m. Celebrate service.

Freedom School

Partner with the children, families and teachers of this school where over 90 percent of the children qualify for free or reduced price lunches; 37 percent speak English as a second language; and 17 percent are homeless. Tutor or mentor a student, serve as a lunch buddy, assist the teachers, help with teacher appreciation events, or serve on an as-needed basis. AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS

These preschool programs meet at 12:30 p.m. and run in five-week sessions throughout the year. The fall program begins Sept. 12 and continues through Dec. 15. The cost is $100 for wellness ministry members and $125 for non-wellness ministry members.

Allows children to run obstacle courses and relay races.

Teaches balance, strength and basic tumbling using gymnastics equipment.
