ENGAGE Spring 2011 // Issue 15 Last Friday we did something a little different at Urban Saints Hitchin. We split our group by gender and then had some guests come and lead separate gender sessions, encouraging the young people to think about what it means to be a man or woman of God. A group of ten leaders and young people from Urban Saints Guildford led the session for the boys and one of our new Urban Saints Trustees, Claire Murphy, came and led the girls’ session. It was an AMAZING evening – particularly bearing in mind the fact that most of the young people who come are not Christians. It was great to see the guys start to open up about the issues that they grapple with – like anger, swearing and porn. And into these boyish discussions was a clear communication of the Gospel. Brilliant. Speaking to my female leaders it seemed that the time with the girls was equally powerful and very moving. As we debriefed at the end of the evening some of the leaders were feeling heartbroken by the depths of low self-esteem that some of the girls felt. And it wasn’t just that some of the girls didn’t like the look of themselves on the outside. Even on the inside, they felt they were bad people – who were difficult to love. The New Living Translation renders Paul’s inspiring words in Ephesians 2:10 this way… we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” We are God’s masterpiece! Created by Him to do good things in the world! To make a difference in the world! To make our mark! And that’s our message to this generation of children and young people! You are God’s masterpiece. You are beautiful! You are amazing! You are precious! You are loved! And yet it seems so hard for them to believe it although perhaps it’s not surprising when they are bombarded every day by a tsunami of media images that present an impossible to attain, and computer-generated, picture of perfection. May our persistent words and actions, and the power of Almighty God, combine together to melt the hardest, and heal the most broken, of hearts – so that this generation will know that they are fearfully and wonderfully made Matt Summerfield Executive Director P.S. Last Friday we did something a little different at Urban Saints Hitchin.

The New Living Translation renders Paul’s inspiring words in Ephesians 2:10 this way…

“…we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

We are God’s masterpiece! Created by Him to do good things in the world! To make a difference in the world! To make our mark!

WELCOME

As I have put together this edition of ENGAGE, it is humbling to read stories from young people who talk about how God has changed their lives, their perspectives and their attitudes. Lily age 19 from Cornwall, for example, speaks of how the Rise Up mentoring programme has helped her - “I know that this year I’m going to go even deeper with God”.

Whether young people belong to an Urban Saints group, or have been part of an Urban Saints experience such as a mission, holiday or training project, it’s fantastic to read how God is working through Urban Saints to restore young people and help them grow in faith. Thank you so much for playing your part – as a volunteer, leading week by week, giving financially,

praying sacrificially, or supporting in some other way. On behalf of these children and young people – thank you!

It is with great pleasure that we can report that the Urban Saints resources web site, Energize, has won the Premier ‘Bloggies’ 2010 Award for the ‘Best Christian Organisation Web Site’. This was part of the 2010 Christian New Media Awards held on 15th October 2010.

There were a lot of entries for the ‘Best Christian Organisation Website’ category (the organiser suggested that it ran to hundreds) so there was stiff competition. It is great that our web site has been recognised in this way and a real encouragement for all involved. We are hugely appreciative of all involved, in particular, our team of writers and our web developers, Worthers.

Our Dream: “To release a movement of radical young people, committed to taking the good news of Jesus Christ to every generation.”

Our Passion: “To help young people live lives of faith, hope and love through Jesus Christ.”

Do you see fundraising as a necessary job that needs to be done in order to carry out the ministry? Sometimes God can use the fundraising times just as much as the God-slot times…

Be encouraged by this group from Scotland. Glenrothes Baptist Church connected to Urban Saints in April 2010 and decided to take a team out to Romania in the summer. During a fundraising walk, eight young people gave their lives to the Lord, three of whom were baptised over the summer.

Laura Balfour, leader, explains, “I think that God is working in spite of us most of the time. We don’t have a paid youth pastor, only a team of youth leaders, all of whom have other commitments and other jobs. We all rely on each other for

support and we have a powerful link of prayer. I guess the biggest tip I could give to leaders would be to pray and continue to do so. Also, to realise that different leaders have different skills in getting alongside certain young people.

“Our young people have just been great. They evangelise using Facebook and love one another so much. We have one boy who claims he is an atheist but comes along to a weekly Bible study because he just loves the atmosphere of being around the other young people.

“One last thing I would say to youth leaders is not to give up on anyone. Two years ago these same young people were nowhere close to being Christians. For some of them they had grown up in the church and were not very interested

in God. A few non-churched young people came on the walk, heard the gospel and pretty much accepted it straight away. That impacted on the rest and has had a lasting impact on the group.”

WALES - “GOD IS TRULY AT WORK IN THIS MINISTRY”

NORTH WEST - “IT HELPED ME TO ANSWER MANY QUESTIONS”

SCOTLAND - EIGHT YOUNG PEOPLE BECOME CHRISTIANS ON FUNDRAISING WALK!

I have had the privilege of participating in numerous Urban Saints events, having been a group member since the age of 8, each event being individual and special. There are not many organisations out there willing to give up their time for us youth, struggling to live in a secular culture with all its temptations as Christians or not. But Urban Saints gives us the opportunity to grow, learn about ourselves and others, and improve skills in general.

I was a young leader for the first time

this year on a camp. It was inspirational seeing God work through such young children, ages 8-11. I also attended Powis camp on the Service Crew. It was beautiful serving the youth and developing patience and thanksgiving through the long hours. Every time I attend an Urban Saints event I know that someone has been touched by God, majorly or fractionally. Either way God is truly at work in this ministry.

Lia Williams, 16, Llanelwy, North Wales

These reflections are from young people in the Lymm group. They underline the partnership/kingdom nature of this group as the leaders encourage the young people to connect with God in ways that are appropriate for them involving other ministries and opportunities with other local churches.

ReBuild Mexico has inspired me to do more for God

Beach mission helped me a lot because many horrible things happened in the months beforehand but it helped me to answer many questions.

Mexico helped me learn about how much I have in comparison with the

rest of the world. Also I have been challenged to think about food wastage which affected me at Spree.

When I witnessed the relief of God’s hand on my friend’s life, my friends started to come to youth with us. My friend is now going to church with her sister.

I have been encouraged by Mexican happenings, times at camp and trips to YP2. This is because these things have helped me experience God. Mark InstoneNorth West Regional Director

In last summer’s Engage I gave an overview of a new mentoring programme for young people we are introducing in partnership with South West Youth Ministries (SWYM). The year-long course is called ‘Rise Up’ and over thirty teenagers from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are taking part in our pilot year. Lily Lamb, 19, from Cornwall is one of the teenagers on Rise Up:

“Before I started Rise Up I was not in a good place. I was finding it hard to really connect with God and have a relationship with Him. Rise Up has given me a mentor who I can turn to and learn from, as well as helping me look deeper into God. The course has highlighted my strengths and helped me with my weaknesses. I now feel like I can achieve anything with God and I know

that this year I’m going to keep on growing and go even deeper with Him.”

Lily almost gave up starting Rise Up a week before the first training day, but her mentor, Becky Thomas, encouraged her to keep going. Becky says that looking back she is amazed at what God has done in Lily’s life through Rise Up and the mentoring process that is part of the course.

Rise Up will be rolled-out in more locations in the South West region in September 2011 and our vision is to see hundreds of teenagers benefitting from the course within the next year or two. www.riseupmentoring.org.uk

A father and son team from near Middlesbrough are planning a return trip to Mexico after last year’s ReBuild trip made a profound impact on their lives. Derek and Josh Evans are currently raising money for this Easter’s trip, with a number of other young people from their community also going to Mexico.

“I was nervous about going to ReBuild because I didn’t know what was going to happen but I enjoyed it,” Josh said. “I made new friends, and was pleased that God provided all the money we needed to go and more. I liked it when

we handed over the keys of the house to the family - I felt happy for them, proud of us and glad that I had done it even though it was hard work. It made me appreciate what I have because the Mexicans were so happy with the little they had.”

Three other groups from the North East will be going out to Mexico this year. They are from Stockton, Harrogate and Pickering.

Richard Townend North East Regional Director

Urban Saints Mill Hill have had a long, inspiring history of working with children and young people in North West London.

I first met the group from Mill Hill at Spree a few years ago and what I saw was huge amounts of potential in a load of teenagers and a group that really was at the heart of God’s mission. After responding to God’s call, I’m now living and working in Mill Hill as Youth Worker for two churches and the three Urban Saints groups, and it’s a real privilege and blessing to be a part of what God is doing here!

What keeps me going is a really committed and patient team of volunteers, a load of fantastic young people who bring with them so much energy and liveliness, and a God who brings encouragement through the small things He does as well as the big! This next year is set to be a great year for us with the group heading to Spree in July and taking part in other regional events and a couple of our lads flying out to Mexico for ReBuild in April! Please pray that God continues to use us and that we would see young lives transformed... Chris Newlyn, 25Urban Saints Mill Hill

The first of the Canterbury ReDefine Hubs took place in November. It started on a Friday evening with a time of worship. The young people stayed overnight on church floors.

On the Saturday morning they met together in small groups before attending two mission training seminars. In the afternoon they got involved in a choice of four programmes: praying for healing with the Canterbury Healing on the Streets team, painting a house for a family in need, clearing an elderly person’s garden, or smartening up a cycle path. The combination of both primarily practical and primarily spiritual mission opportunities allowed young

people to be stretched and serve where they could both be challenged and cope!

On the Saturday evening a superb ‘Canterbury’s Got Talent’ evening rounded things off, with a well attended and great fun event.

The next ReDefine hub will be in Folkestone, and the one after in Thanet. Praise God for a successful launch, and for the building relationships between youth leaders in the towns surrounding Canterbury.

IRELAND - “I NOW HAVE A PASSION TO SEE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LOVE JESUS TRAINED AND RELEASED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LOCALITY”Urban Saints Transform is a mission team set within West Belfast, an area deeply affected during the recent troubles. As part of a team of seven, we worked alongside the existing Youth Initiatives project in the area.

We set out to improve the locality through practical service activities, such as gardening, painting and litter picking. This gave us ample opportunity to build relationships.

Transform saw two cultures come together with all their baggage. I was able to interact with people from backgrounds who I wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to meet, and to

form valued and lasting friendships. I was enlightened to the vast amount of serious issues facing people a mere 30 minutes drive from my home. I left the mission feeling inspired by how well the local young people face the issues in front of them and have such a strong longing to better themselves and their locality.

Since Transform, I have a much determination to help both practically through service as well as bringing something of the hope we find in Jesus Christ. Above all, as a leader in my local group of Gilnahirk, I now have a passion to see young people who love

Jesus trained and released to make a difference in their locality.

Stuart Gibson, 19.

NORTH EAST - “DESPITE DOUBT AND CONCERN, THEY WERE TRULY BLESSED WITH AN EVENT THAT HAS LEFT LASTING IMPRESSIONS”

When the Energize group in Pickering suggested that the congregation should organise a ReAct fun day, they thought the project was too big for them.

But more than 500 people enjoyed the day in August last year, and a hundred stayed for church outdoors. What’s more, there’s been significant developments since the fun day, as Energize leader Lottie Day explains:

“ReAct has given the Chapel encouragement and enthusiasm to work within the community of Pickering. The Church felt that God was really working with them and, despite doubt and concern, they were truly blessed

with an event that has left lasting impressions in Pickering.

This has been seen in the rise in numbers attending the children’s activity days, youth events, and the people attending a Start course. ReAct showed the Church that with prayer and faith, God will guide them into new ways of connecting with the community. There is no stopping the enthusiasm and creativity, with new ideas in the pipeline. For the young people involved, it strengthened their faith, and taught them to step out in faith.”

In recent years, the way we all communicate has changed dramatically. The growth of social networking websites and other interactive technologies, such as smart-phones, have opened up great opportunities for us to share information and stories, and to connect with and support our young people and children.

Facebook – Urban Saints have their own page on the world’s most popular social networking site. It features prayer topics, good news stories, behind-the-scenes photos and information. We ran a vote for people to choose the new colour of hoodie. We have used the page to listen to the opinions of young people, leaders and supporters. Connect with the Urban Saints Facebook page and you can ‘like’ and comment on things that are posted and even ‘check-in’ when you visit the Support Centre in Luton.http://www.facebook.com/urbansaints

Twitter – Do you ‘tweet’?! We do! We’ve been using Twitter for a while now and we’ve found it to be a great way to inform and interact with other interested “Tweet-heads”! Our Twitter feed is full

of announcements, links to resources, stories about what God is doing within Urban Saints and chatter from the Urban Saints team. We publish our prayer diary – Pray4Change as twice-daily messages on Twitter too. Follow us on our Twitter pages.http://www.twitter.com/urbansaintshttp://www.twitter.com/pray4change

YouTube – Seen an Urban Saints video – like Matt’s Message, a Spree video, features from Leaders’ TV or one of our promotional videos – and want to know where to find them? You can see them all on the Energize website but they are also available on the Urban Saints YouTube channel. You can also embed one of the videos on your Facebook page or your own website. http://www.youtube.com/urbansaintsmedia

iTunes – Matt’s monthly video messages have been very popular since we launched them 18 months ago. You can now get them sent direct to your computer by subscribing to Matt’s messages as podcasts on iTunes.

If you have not subscribed to

podcasts before, they are a way of downloading and storing videos from the internet so you can watch them at your leisure, rather than having to be connected to the internet. Once you have set up iTunes on your computer, you can subscribe to messages and the new messages will automatically be downloaded when you open iTunes.

You can also get the new Leaders’ TV programme as a podcast too. Search for ‘Urban Saints’ in iTunes for more information. http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes

In 2010, we launched our new Leaders’ TV series. This is a half-termly programme especially for our group leaders, featuring news from Urban Saints, suggestions about things that leaders might have missed, tips for working with kids and young people and some extra silliness thrown in. It is a great opportunity to keep our Energize leaders better informed and offers a glimpse of life within the

Urban Saints team. You can watch Leaders TV on the Energize website (under ‘Articles’) or you can subscribe to them as downloads on iTunes.

So, there’s now no excuse for missing out on the latest information, videos, photos and general Urban Saints chatter! Get connected and join in the conversation!

“I felt your message was timed just perfectly for our group.”

“Thanks for your message. It was very moving and reassuring and gives me hope!”

“I just want to tell you as a leader how much I appreciate these short videos. They are encouraging, challenging, to the point and short so can be easily watched. Please keep sending them!”

“Just wanted to let you know how the Lord encouraged me by your message. We don’t often see fruit but we know this is a special work that the Lord wants us to do. We are in our mid sixties now and sometimes wonder if we are too old but while we are fit we will continue to serve the Lord in this way so thanks for encouraging us to keep on ‘keeping on’.”

You will probably be aware that from April 2011, HMRC are reducing gift aid to 25% from 28%. This will result in an estimated loss of £12,000 per annum for us. For us to still receive the same amount as before, please consider whether you could increase your giving to balance this out. If you have a monthly direct debit of £10, you would only need to increase it by 26p per month, or if you have a monthly direct debit of £50, an increase of £1.28 per month would give us the original amount. Thank you so much.

One of our Associates, John Davis, has written a new book called ‘The Greatest Gift’. The Rt Rev Peter Nott says, “This book will speak powerfully to many seekers after truth and meaning, because it is written by someone who has been immersed in the world of science and technology, but whose vision goes beyond (that)”

He writes simply, clearly and profoundly about the central truths of Christianity, sharing with inspiring truth and honesty his personal journey of faith which goes straight to the heart of

modern day Christianity.

Matt Summerfield says, “A refreshing way of explaining the good news to non-Christians.”

You may remember that last year we sent out an appeal asking for donations towards MIMIC. I am delighted to tell you that an extremely generous £39,200 was raised, which means that, including match funding from two of our donors, almost £80,000 has been raised to develop this exciting new way of doing discipleship with young people. We are very grateful that so many of you are able to support the ministry financially which enables us to continue reaching and teaching young people for Jesus.

The new Urban Saints website MIMIC is specifically designed to help children and young people to follow Jesus and to become like Him.
