At an early age, Julie Bruder, a CSU senior nursing major, knew she wanted to be a soldier. As a high school student growing up in North Canton, Ohio, she enlisted in the Ohio National Guard before graduating high school. While her friends were doing keg stands and enjoying their summers, Julie was learning to become a soldier at U.S. Army Basic Combat Training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After basic training, she returned to North Canton where she enrolled in community college and earned a degree in respiratory therapy. Wanting to work at one of the nation’s top hospitals, Julie moved to Cleveland where she landed a job as a respiratory therapist at the Cleveland Clinic and enrolled at CSU to earn her nursing degree. Soon after, she set her sights on becoming a commissioned officer in the Guard and enrolled in CSU’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. ROTC is a program where college students train to lead soldiers and become commissioned officers in the United States Army. Upon graduation, officers are shipped to duty stations around the world to lead soldiers and serve their country. While still in college, students can receive stipends and scholarships to finance their education while they learn about leadership skills, physical training, military traditions and customs, and receive hands-on training in hand-to-hand combat, land navigation and various other areas. For Julie, the ROTC program gives her a chance to hone the tactical skills she learned in the Guard, meet new friends, learn new strategic military procedures, improve her physical fitness and gain leadership skills. Forty-hour weeks at the Clinic, monthly drills with fellow Guard soldiers, classes at CSU and training with her ROTC peers makes for a hectic schedule. When she can find the time to squeeze in a few of her hobbies, she goes for a run, enjoys singing and traveling, and most of all spending time with family and friends. When asked how she would describe CSU, Julie often uses the word “dynamic” because of the great academic programs, partnerships, student life, location and opportunities that the University offers students. However, she fails to mention that dynamic students like her help make CSU what it is today.

People of all ages, races and religions enlist in the military for different reasons. Some enlist for college money and some to protect our country, while others enlist for the challenge and excite-

ment of jumping out of an airplane, driving a tank or learning to fire state-of-the-art weapons.

When she can find the time to squeeze in

a few of her hobbies, she goes for a run, enjoys singing and traveling, and most of all spending time with family and friends.

When asked how she would describe CSU, Julie often uses the word “dynamic” because of the great academic programs, partnerships, student life, location and opportunities that the University offers students. However, she fails to mention that dynamic students like her help make CSU what it is today.
