can successfully participate in the Minimum Participation track and avoid the 4% penalty byreporting just one quality measure. However, to participate in either the Full or PartialParticipation tracks, CMS requires a minimum 90 day participation period. This means thatphysicians must begin participating in those activities no later than October 2, 2017.

To learn how to avoid the 4% penalty, watch the short AMA video, “One patient, one measure,no penalty: How to avoid a Medicare payment penalty with basic reporting.” Physicians candetermine the right course of action for their practice with step-by-step assistance fromthe AMA MIPS Action Plan and resources and tools on the AMA's "Pick your Pace" webpage.New CMS online resources on QPP are also available.

AMA President: "We Need More Time With Patients, Less at the Keyboards" While sitting between two U.S. senators, AMA President David O.

Barbe, MD, MHA, told a Washington audience that government can aplay a role in strengthening the “almost sacred” patient-physicianrelationship by reducing physicians’ administrative burdens, increasingcost transparency and facilitating electronic health record (EHR) interoperability and dataliquidity. “Physicians have become data-entry clerks,” Dr. Barbe said, noting how they spendtwo hours on EHR and deskwork activities for every hour they spend face to face withpatients. “That’s upside down.” Read more at AMA Wire®.

Vivek Murthy, MD Focuses on Physician Well-being After serving as the nation's doctor, responsible for matters of vital importance to the public’s

health, former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, is calling for greater attention andaction on another critical issue: physicians’ well-being. During a recent interview, Dr. Murthydescribed “watching kind, brilliant, idealistic colleagues become cynical and burned out asthey realized they couldn’t provide the care their patients needed in a broken system.” Readmore at AMA Wire®.

What Do You Do When Your Professional Liability Insurer Leaves Town? Receiving notice that your professional liability insurance company is leaving the market can

be a jarring experience, leaving you with a multitude of unanswered questions. Insurance companies are regulated at the state level, meaning federal protection agencies

such as the FDIC do not step in when an insurer leaves the market. You will need todetermine how to move forward and secure a new professional liability policy. When selectinga replacement, watch for indications of financial stability and customer satisfaction. This helpsto indicate that your new insurer is invested in the market and is less likely to make a suddendeparture.

Single Mutation May Have Led to Dangerous Zika Strain

A single mutation in the Zika virus around 2013 may have caused it to evolve into a strain“much more dangerous to developing brain cells,” according to a study published in Science. The new research may explain how Zika became so dangerous, but many researchers arestill focused on developing a vaccine to prevent future outbreaks. Anthony Fauci, MD, thedirector of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that five or sixvaccines are already being tested in clinical trials with people. Dr. Fauci added, “This workremains incredibly important because with these types of viruses, it comes in waves. There’sa big outbreak and then it goes away. But it never really disappears, a year or two later, youoften see another outbreak. We have to be ready for that.”
