Rescue missions to the 7 Most Endangered 2016Heritage and financial experts from Europa Nostra and the European InvestmentBank Institute went on mission to the archaeological site of Ererouyk and thevillage of Anipemza in Armenia in July; to Patarei Sea Fortress in Tallinn inEstonia as well as to the Kampos of Chios in Greece in September. Two othersites, Colbert Swing Bridge in Dieppe in France and Helsinki-Malmi Airport inFinland, were visited already in June. In the coming months we plan to holdworking meetings related to the Convent of St. Anthony of Padua in Extremadurain Spain and the Ancient city of Hasankeyf and its surroundings in Turkey. Alongwith the representatives from the organisations that nominated the sites, theEuropean experts have met, and will meet, with national, regional and localstakeholders to mobilise them and encourage them to join forces in saving theseendangered gems of Europe’s cultural heritage. The key findings andrecommendations of all missions will be published in reports at the beginning of2017. Read more

Preparing for the European Yearof Cultural Heritage 2018The EC proposal for the European Year of CulturalHeritage 2018 (published on 30 August), is expected tobe adopted by the Council and the European Parliamentby the end of this year. This proposal, which refers toEuropa Nostra as one of the key stakeholders consultedin the process, sends a strong signal to both policy-makers and citizens that cultural heritage matters forEurope’s future. Europa Nostra, in cooperation withGerman Cultural Heritage Committee - DNK will hold apublic debate on the Year on 10 November, during itsmeetings at the Denkmal Fair in Leipzig. Read more

Helena Vaz da Silva Award forPlantu and Eduardo LourençoThe world-renowned French cartoonist JeanPlantureux, known as Plantu, and the eminentPortuguese philosopher Eduardo Lourenço jointlyreceived the 2016 Helena Vaz da Silva European Awardfor Raising Public Awareness on Cultural Heritage. Theaward was presented to the laureates by the Presidentof the Portuguese Republic at a memorable ceremonyheld on 10 October at the Gulbenkian Foundation inLisbon. This Award is a joint initiative of the CentroNacional de Cultura, our representation in Portugal,Europa Nostra and the Clube Português de Imprensa.Read more

Europa Nostra backs UNESCO’sappeal to save VeniceOn 14 July, during the 40th World Heritage Committeesession in Istanbul, Europa Nostra endorsed UNESCO’sappeal to the Italian authorities to urgently adopt the

necessary measures to save Venice and its Lagoon.This message was conveyed by Europa Nostra’sPresident Plácido Domingo in a letter sent toUNESCO’s Director General Irina Bokova on 11 July.Earlier this year, The Venice Lagoon was declared as‘The Most Endangered Site in Europe’ by Europa Nostraand the European Investment Bank Institute.
