MARTHA BYRD HOYLE, AUTHOR OF "A WORLD IN FLAMES"

To Be Published on April 13

At first glance, Martha Byrd Hoyle seems an unlikely candidate to join

the ranks of able World War II historians. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa

from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a major in history,

she married Dr. "Skip11 Hoyle, an Eastman chemist. Together they set about

making a home and raising a family in Kingsport, Tennessee.

But Martha Hoyle never lost her passion for history and when her children

reached school age she returned to studying history for pleasure. Mrs. Hoyle

recalls, 11Intrigued by the complexities of the Second World War, I began to

write A WORLD IN FLAMES in 1962. I was writing for people like me--the gen

eral reader who wanted to know, first of all, what happened. And of course,

so much happened that once I got it down it seemed like enough for the reader

to handle. I also felt that one had to acquire a picture of 'who did what'

before any consideration in depth could be undertaken.

"If A WORLD IN FLAMES ended up being a narration of action, it was be

cause it was vital to be brief ... the valor of Dunkirk, the agony of Iwo and

Tarawa, the courage of Omaha, the tenacity of Anzio, the imponderables of de

cision-making--somehow all these human elements had to be subordinate to the

basic structure of actual events. History cannot be isolated. You must

understand what happened in relation to what has gone before. And so the book

offers an overall picture. I think it will be useful ... "

Nearly a decade of intensive research and writing has resulted in A WORLD

IN FLAMES, a book which has already received much praise. Martha Byrd Hoyle,

a woman who lists her occupation as 11housewife,11 is on her way to becoming

recognized as an eminent new historian. Atheneum will publish A WORLD IN

FLAMES: A History of World War II by Martha Byrd Hoyle on April 13 for $10.00.

--GENERAL JAMES M. GAVIN

HERE'S WHAT IS BEING SAID ABOUT "A WORLD IN FLAMES" BY MARTHA BYRD HOYLE

"Martha Hoyle's book, A WORLD IN FLAMES, is the best compact history

of World War II that has been published. It will fill a real need for our

students and our society."

"It is an excellent summary of the military side of World War II in

about as concise a form as one could hope for. For a brief overall view of

military operations between 1939 and 1945, I find this meets a real need."

--LOUIS MORTON, Chairman, Department of History, Dartmouth College

"In her first book, Martha Byrd Hoyle concentrates on making clear for

the general reader the incredibly complex_ side of military events that make

--Publishers' Weekly, January 19

up her comprehensive 'combat narrative' of World War II. She succeeds ad-

mirably, and writes with a simple clarity that sustains interest while it

illuminates the interrelationships of the 'several wars' fought simultane-

ously on worldwide fronts."

"Crisp and unpretentious, this chronological chronicle of World War II

... should find its grateful readers."

--Kirkus Reviews, January 1

A WORLD IN FLAMES has been chosen as the July selection of the History
