WHAT IS ENERGY?
•As a table, come up with a 1 sentence
definition for energy. How would you
define energy? (There is no right
answer now. I just want to see what you
would say).
WHAT IS ENERGY?
•Energy is the power or ability to
do work.
THERE ARE 9 MAIN TYPES OF ENERGY THAT WE ARE GOING TO DISCUSS.
• The nine types are:
•Mechanical
• Electrical
• Chemical
• Heat
• Nuclear
• Light
• Elastic
•Gravitational
• Sound
MECHANICAL ENERGY
•Movement of large objects
•A moving car
•Running
•Spinning turbine (a wheel) – example is a
windmill
ELECTRICAL ENERGY
•Flow of electrons, often through a wire
•Electricity
•Lightning
•Wires
CHEMICAL ENERGY
•Energy stored in bonds (or connections)
between atoms.
•Food
•Battery acid
•Coal
•Gasoline
• The movement of the
whole atom. Measured
by temperature. The
faster the atoms are
moving, the more heat
and the higher the
temperature. Think: Which of the two liquid samples
has a higher temperature? WHY?

HEAT (THERMAL) ENERGY
EXAMPLES OF THINGS THAT GIVE OFF HEAT ENERGY
•Lightbulb
•Fire
•Sun
NUCLEAR ENERGY
• Energy stored in the bonds of protons in the
nucleus. Nuclear energy is produced when nuclei
split apart (fission) or when nuclei combine
together (fusion)
• The main example you need to know is that
fusion (combining of nuclei) occurs in the core
of the sun. This is the source of all energy in
the universe.
•Atomic bombs are another example. The
splitting of nuclei in the bomb is nuclear
energy.
LIGHT (ELECTROMAGNETIC) ENERGY
•Waves sent out that allow us to see. Also called electromagnetic
energy. Electromagnetic energy includes light as well as other
waves such as X-rays, radio waves, and UV rays (from the sun).
•Lightbulb
•Fire
•Sun sends down light
ELASTIC ENERGY
•Bending, twisting, or stretching an object.
•Spring
•Rubber band
•Bow string (pulling back arrow)
GRAVITATIONAL ENERGY
•Gravity making an object move.
•Ball falling
•Waterfall
•Pendulum
•Jumping (gravity pulls you down)
SOUND ENERGY
•Noise energy. Sound is sent out in waves which move the
surrounding air. The vibrations created in the air cause our
eardrum to vibrate and this allows us to hear.
•Radio
•Talking
•Thunder
•Boom of fireworks
•Musical instruments
