Thailand is a net energy importer, chiey
because of oil, with imports worth 900 billion
baht a year, while energy demand is rising
by 4% annually.
For this reason, the government has to
implement the policy and measures to
promote the continuously increase of
alternative energy consumption comprising
of solar, wind, small hydro power, biomass,
biogas, MSW and biofuels (ethanol and
biodiesel) to replace fossil energy. Including
with, the policy on energy efciency to
improve energy efciency in all economic
sectors by decreasing of energy intensity.
In 2012 Thailands nal energy consumption
has increased 3.9% from the previous
year whereas nal alternative energy
consumption has grown 7.6% and energy
intensity has decreased 2.4%

As an agricultural country, Thailand is rich in agricultural wastes and products that can be yielded
for energy purposes such as biomass, biogas, biodiesel, ethanol, and the by-products from
processed food industry. Geographically situated in the equator, Thailand also has great potential
in solar with average radiation of 18.2 MJ/m2/day; and in some areas with wind speed potential.
Such abundant alternative energy sources certainly make Thailand the best potential on
alternative energy development and create opportunity to strengthen energy security in the future.
The Government of Thailand has currently assigned the Ministry of Energy to set up the 10 Year
Alternative Energy Development Plan (AEDP) aiming to create the framework and direction for
increasing alternative energy consumption by 25% in 2021.

Energy efciency also has benets beyond responding to energy security and climate change,
because improving energy efciency enhances the overall productivity of the economy. Ministry
of Energy of Thailand is very committed to long term improvement of the Countrys energy
efciency and energy saving. Thailands Energy Efciency goal is to accomplish 25% improvement
on energy intensity by 2030 under Energy Efciency Master Plan.
