Date : 12 January 2012
Batch : MBA-Energy and Environment (Batch 2011-13)
Summary :
Ms Cleo Paskal conducted a workshop on how global climate change is likely to threaten
environmental security and as a consequence led to serious conflicts between nations. She
utilised the opportunity to explain to students the geo political aspects of climate change and its
implications for national security. She also examined the rapid pace of global change by
combining insightful economic and political analysis with the most likely environmental change
scenarios. She identified problem areas that could start conflicts (access to water and resources
in Asia), economic trends that could shift the balance of power (China’s policy of nationalistic
capitalism), and geopolitical realignments (the burgeoning strategic partnership between the
United States and India).
She spoke on how seemingly impervious western nations, such as the United States, are
shockingly vulnerable to hurricanes, storm surges and rising sea levels, and what that could mean
for their internal stability and economic development; how the thawing Arctic is opening up a
vast resources, strategic shipping routes such as the Northwest Passage and geopolitical leverage;
how changing precipitation patterns, extreme weather and water shortages are creating severe
disruptions in India and China, and how that could affect their relations with each other, and the
world; how rising sea levels may shift borders and alter the very notion of statehood, potentially
challenging international law to the breaking point; and , finally, what could happen in coming
decades, and how to avoid the worst of it.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) or e-waste, is one of the fastest growing
advanced type of solid waste streams in urban environment worldwide. E-waste/WEEE in
general comprises of all old, end-of-life appliances like computers, laptops, audio and video
products, refrigerators, freezers, mobiles phones, etc. along with their peripherals. Globally,
WEEE is growing by about 40 million tons a year. In developed countries, e-waste constitutes 1-
2% of the total solid waste generation. Developing countries are in the challenging phase as they
are already facing the continuum of hazardous e-waste mountains. The physical composition of
e-waste is very diverse and contains over 1000 different substances. Majority of e-waste
components are precious heavy metals which are non-renewable and finite resource and
therefore valuable. In this context the Indian Govt. formulated e-waste handling rules, 2011 for
effective management of e-waste. However, it is not an easy path to understand these rules.
Dr Lakshmi Raghupathy, one of the key members in formulating e-waste policies provided the
requisite insight to the students of MBA (EE) on these aspects during workshop. Students
enjoyed the workshop content.
16. Workshop Title : Energy Management System ISO 50001 and PAT scheme
Speaker : Dr Ramani Iyer, Mr Prakash Bapat, Forbes Marshall Ltd, Pune
Date : 22 September 2012
Batch : MBA-Energy and Environment (Batch 2011-13)
Summary :
Energy efficiency helps all organisations save money and conserve resources to tackle climate
change issue. ISO 50001 supports organizations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently,
through the development of an Energy Management System (EnMS). It based on the
management system model of continual improvement. This makes it easier for organizations to
integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental
management. Mr Ramani Iyer and Mr Prakash Bapat through their workshop provided to the
students of MBA (EE) the ISO 50001:2011 framework of requirements for organizations to:
develop a policy for more efficient use of energy; fix targets and objectives to meet the policy;
use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use; measure the results; review
how well the policy works, and continually improve energy management. The workshop was
well appreciated by the students.
17. Workshop Title : Practical applications of GIS and Remote Sensing in Energy and
Environment sector
Speaker : Dr G Areendran, Director, Indira Gandhi Conservation Monitoring Centre ,WWF
India
Date : 6-8 October 2012
Batch :MBA-Energy and Environment (Batch 2011-13)
Summary : Geographical Information systems and Remote Sensing is an integral part of the
Course curriculum of the MBA Programme. The use of GIS and RS as a tool for managers to
take informed decisions on energy ,environment and natural resoruces related businsses has been
recognised the world over. Keeping this in mind, the Academic programme has introduced a
course to provide conceptual understanding of the basic facts related to GIS /RS and its potential
applications in Business and Industry. Dr G Areendran, an expert in the applications of the tool
in Industry was invited to hold a training workshop for the senior batch students on the various
aspects of GIS and RS. During this period students were given hands on training on how the
tools can be used to develop effective GIS based solutions in Energy and Environment related
sectors.
