Dear Pupils and Parents,

As another year comes to an end, the Governors at Berrymede want to say a huge thank you to all the staff, pupils and parents for what has been another successful and exciting year for Berrymede! It’s also an opportune time to set out what the Governors at Berrymede do and what we have been up to over the past year…

The Governors are responsible for three main areas: we help to set the school’s strategic direction and vision, we ensure that money is spent in the most effective way, and to ensure that the school is performing to the highest standards. We do this through working closely with Mrs Khan and her senior leadership team, regularly meeting to discuss pupils’ achievements and welfare, review the school’s policies and agree Berrymede’s budget. In the coming year, we are keen to meet more of you, both pupils and parents, to understand your views and vision for Berrymede.

During the last term, we have welcomed several new governors: Ms Pepper, Mr Suleman, and Mrs Islam. We are also saying goodbye to Dr Jill Stren and Mrs Dinah Boateng, with our deepest thanks for their contributions to Berrymede.

The Governors are extremely proud to be part of the Berrymede community, and during our visits into school we have been very impressed with the behaviour, attitudes and achievements of our pupils this year. Thank you to parents for your continued support of both your little stars and the school; we look forward to continuing to work with you in the coming year. We are also thankful to Mrs Khan and all the teachers and staff at Berrymede for their continued efforts over the past year to ensure our pupils get the education and opportunities they truly deserve.

This has been another year of big opportunities and continuous improvement, as we strive to provide the best life chances for all our pupils. The Governors have been impressed to see all the exciting activities, including welcoming our visitors from China, seeing pupil’s achievements in the British Dance Off and Tai Chi competitions, the brilliant ideas from pupils in the recent WE event, and the many school trips and events! The hard work of the school has been recognised through awards for inclusion, equalities and reading, while we continue to be proud of our position as a UNICEF Rights Respecting school.

As we look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the year ahead, we wish our Year 6’s all the very best in your new schools, as you start this next big adventure. We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your time at Berrymede and the school will miss your wonderful contributions. Remember, you can achieve anything you want in life, if you only have a little imagination and work hard!

If you would like to talk to Governors about anything in school, please contact us through the school office.

Wishing you all an enjoyable and restful summer,

The Governors of Berrymede Junior School

Another successful year draws to a close. Year 3 have had an incredibly exciting and busy time and it is amazing to see how much has been achieved by the children in one year. Mrs Lamb, Mrs Mir, Mrs Mangat and Miss Cory have loved getting to know the children and watching them grow and flourish both inside and outside of the classroom. It is difficult to identify the highlights as there are genuinely so many: from author visits, school trips to assemblies. We wish all the children good luck and know they will continue to do amazing things in year 4!

TRIPS Year 3 have been lucky to go on three incredible trips this year, each tying into the National Curriculum. The trip to the Natural History Museum, where we saw gigantic skeletons of various animals, was tied into our Science topic about skeletons.. For our Stone Age topic in History, we ventured to the Museum of London where we learnt how to survive in the Stone Age. At Kew Gardens we learnt abut how plants flowers survive in different climates. Year 3 were also lucky to enjoy visits from two published authors, Andrew Clover and Penny Prendeville, who read their books out loud and answered our pupils’ questions.

LITERACY SKILLS - WALL OF FAME Here at Berrymede Junior School, the teachers’ always looks forward to Reading the pupils' independent work. One of the many ways we encourage our pupils to develop their writing skills is through the use of the challenge board. This is known as the 'Wall of Fame.' Congratulations to the following children who have seen their work celebrated in this way. Nadia Abdi, Junayd Yusuf, Adeca Maryam-Farz, Ysabel Olabode, Sabirin Mahdi, Omar Abdel Sattar, Amrit Bains, Earl Kizito, Yacob Abdi

A note from the Teachers: As another successful year draws to a close, we have reflected on a fantastic year. It is amazing how much has been achieved by the children, academically, in sport and the creative arts. Some of the highlights are included in this newsletter. However, it is with great sadness that we say good bye to Mrs Salem, who is going on to pastures new. We thank her for her tremendous efforts over the past year, and know she will be missed by the team. Thank you to the amazing Mrs Ahmed, Madame Shahin Miss Debbie and Mr McDonald for all their hard work.

The Year 5 team would like to wish everyone a wonderful summer holiday, and the best of luck for year 6! Pupils are back to school on Wednesday 5th September at normal time!

Year 6 Classes – September 2018 5M – 6J Mr Jeffs 5H – 6A Miss Anderson 5S – 6C Miss Carroll 5C – 6Y Miss Young

Year 5 students went on an exciting trip to the Ragged School Museum. They were transported back to the 1880s, and experience first-hand what Victorian schooling was really like. The students also investigated a series of mysterious 19th century domestic objects.

All you need is one idea to start a story.” Andy Stanton Year 5 went to the Paul Robeson Theatre, where they met the author of Mr Gum: Andy Stanton. They took part in a Q + A session which they thoroughly enjoyed. After the session, the students bought some of his famous books; these were then signed and personalised by the author himself: Andy Stanton.

Year 5 students visited Acton High School and took part in a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI). The students carried out a number of investigations where they examined the hair follicles and finger prints of suspects. The students thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and were pleased when they successfully used their investigative skills to identify the suspects at a crime scene!

Year 5 students visited London Transport Museum and discovered how London’s buses have changed over time. They also took on the challenges of solving the mystery of a passenger who forgot to ‘mind the gap’ and was lost in time.

As year 6 is coming to an end we can all agree it has had its ups and downs, but all in all, it has been one of the best years ever! We would like to share our favourite memories with you: During the first few days of Year 6 I felt sick and nervous; I had butterflies in my stomach. There were old faces and new. People I knew; people I didn’t. However the teachers were very kind and welcoming, we didn’t do lessons for the first week, for the first week we just got to know each other. The next thing that comes to mind when we thought of Year 6 was SATs! We all thought it would be a nightmare but the teachers assured us it would be fine, and it was! We revised and practiced, revised and practised until the dreaded week came, but to our surprise it flew by and seemed easier than we had imagined. Maybe all that hard work had worked. All of our hard work paid off at the end because we had six awesome trips which included: Chillax in Gunnersbury Park: Shrek Adventure, mini golf and bowling. These were definitely well earned treats. As you can see Year 6 has been a hard but fun year, however there is still one more point to add- a sad point. As we leave Berrymede, we are all starting the path of becoming adult people in our society. This means leaving special friends who have been with us since the beginning. This will be tough for us all. It is not just friends who have become part of us; it’s also teacher and peers too, and in our opinion this will be the hardest part of all.

It has been an exciting year for Year 6 at Berrymede with a focus on SATs, transition to high school and many extra-curricular activities. Some of our Year 6 students have written a short report about their experiences this year. Read on to find out what we have been up to…

The Year 6 team would like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe summer holiday! Wishing all the year 6 pupils The best of luck for High School in September.
