FEBRUARY / MARCH 2016
Thank you all for giving me this
opportunity to lead CIYC for the next year. I am looking forward to it.
2016-17 was a stressful year for our Club and its management. We lost our chef on very short notice. Three
former Commodores passed away: Paul McCarthy, Paul Smart and Jerry Tabern. The America’s Cup trip to Ber-muda was in doubt due to Paul’s death.
Special thanks should be given to our Commodore Joe Mondelli and our general manager Freddy D’Amelia for finding not only a summer replacement for Chef Jeff but also a permanent replacement, Chef Jerry Beaudry. Keeping our America’s Cup trip alive was another 2016-17 miracle, pulled off by Ann Keches with the able assistance of Maureen Dalton and Cindy Brown. With over 20% of the club going on the trip, they have it well organized. It looks like our best trip so far.
2017-18 will be a busy year for our management team as we have a number of projects in the works. Some will be noticeable when accomplished, while others will not. On the schedule are improvements to our parking lot and docks on the property, and the software accounting system in the office. Updating the club interior, signage and the kitchen are also on our radar It is a wonderful wish list to work on and prioritize. We will be restrained by how much each project will cost, and there will be no assessments to complete any of them. Stay tuned for further news on these projects.
The social committee is planning a fun and full event program for next year. Our galley committee will be working with Chef Jerry and Freddy on menu selections and specials. You will be pleased with their presentations and innovations. The waterfront activities are still in their infancy, but The Dinghy Dames and The Channel Champs kayak groups are off to the races. If you would like to join Channel Champs, please see page 7 for information, and give it a try! It’s a great way to enjoy the water, meet new people, and make new friends.
Enjoy the rest of the season and have a wonderful summer.
Phil

Former Director/Commodore: Mel Jager FCYC Director: Tom O’Toole Alternate Director: Roland Garlinghouse The first FCYC meeting of the year was held on
January 14 at The Florida Yacht Club, on the western banks of the St. John’s River in Jacksonville. FYC, founded in 1876, is the second oldest yacht club in Florida; St. Augustine Yacht Club is the oldest. 34 of 36 clubs were represented. Attendees heard from Kellie Ralston, who serves as policy director for the Florida division of the American Sportfishing Association. It was surprising to learn that Florida leads the nation in “fishing days per year” at a figure north of 45 million! We also heard from Tucker Thompson, who did a fabulous job covering plans for the upcoming America’s Cup race in Bermuda.
Upcoming meetings of the FCYC include March 11 at the Venice Yacht Club, and May 20 at the Pensacola Yacht Club. You are always welcome to attend - it’s a great opportunity to meet members from other yacht clubs.
Trish McKiddie and I are honored for the opportunity to represent our club on the Council for the past several years. Now there is a changing of the guard. We are turning the helm over to Tom O’Toole as Director and Roland Garlinghouse as Alternate Director. If you have questions about the Council or wish to attend a meeting, feel free to reach out to Tom or Roland at any time.

SURVEY RESULTS
CIYC VOLUNTEERS! SO MANY TO THANK
As I took the helm at Change of Watch in March 2016, I knew there would be challenges before me and CIYC. Some were more challenging than others, but throughout the year they were success-fully handled by the most impressive group of member volunteers imaginable.
A very special thanks to the Flags, Officers, and Board of Directors and the following individuals: ANN KECHES, CINDY BROWN & MO DALTON, for taking on the Bermuda trip planning; LIZ LOMBARDO & FAITH SOUDERS, development of Dinghy Dames; DON RICE, who authored our new vision and mission statement; TIM O’NEILL, for his superb work as membership chair; TODD ROBERTS, property chair, especially for his work on advancing the parking lot paver project scheduled for September; CHAR NELSON for agreeing to postpone her retirement and continue as secretary for my term; CINDY BROWN for just about everything; and of course LINDA MONDELLI who worked tirelessly as my first mate. Her organization and communication skills are a joy to experience. Throughout this past year she, along with our team, successfully arranged a full calendar of fun and exciting events.
The following are just some of the many CIYC volunteers who are dedicated to our club-- and whose hard work, advice and guidance were the cornerstone of any measure of success accomplished during my term as Commodore:
Paula & Peter Bentinck-Smith, Susen Berg, Blair & Dennis Berry, Dick Boehning, Judy & Barry Bronstein, Cindy & Jay Brown, Judy Brust, Adrienne Cross, Maureen Dalton, Maggie Davis, Vonnie & Phil Dressel, Molly Downing, Mike Dutton, Andi Elkes, Ginny Fleming, Pam & John Fridlington, Dot Gallagher, Gail & Roland Garlinghouse, Mardi Glenn, Ginny & Mel Jager, Karen & Warren Haug, Jane Henshaw, Liddy Johnson, Barbara & Campbell Johnstone, Mary Ann Kanzius, Ann Keches, Mary LaVelle, Liz Lombardo, Ann & Jim Loomis, Jeri Magg, Arlene MacDonald, Char Nelson, Julie & Tim O’Neill, Lee Ann & Tom O’Toole, Lynn & Dave Padgett, Karl Reik, Ginny Reiss, Peter Reuling, Joyce & Don Rice, Karen & Todd Roberts, Nancy Rolley, Ada Shissler, Faith & Ron Souders, Ginny & Ed Stringer, Kay Tabern, Merrill Taylor, Monica Taylor, Penny Wilkinson, Regina & Walter Wolczek.
With Sincere Thanks, Joe Mondelli, CIYC Commodore 2016-2017
