AGGIORNAMENTO! By Fr. Greg Piatt

Last Saturday, I blessed the parish’s new organ at the 4 p.m. Mass. Our new organ will enrich our music at Mass and has been a missing piece in our music ministry.

Next month, during the weekend, our parish will celebrate its patron saint, St. John XXIII; we will showcase our new organ with a recital on Sunday, October 10, at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Two organists will play at the recital: Rick Cucchi, our musician at our Saturday 4 p.m. Mass, and Lance Luce, Evola Music organ specialist who sold us the instrument.

Luce is a high school classmate of mine and has been playing organs at different venues—Fox Theatre, Little Caesars, and Joe Louis Arenas—around town since our high school years.

+++

Come this Friday and check out Fr. Greg in his 15 minutes of fame when the parish will show Schindler’s List for its Friday Movie Night this week.

There will be ice cream before the film, which we will be showing at 7 p.m. Since the Schindler’s List runs for more than 3 hours, there will be an intermission with snacks.

Fr. Greg, in the photo, will also fill the 15-minute intermission with a few stories and experiences while working as a bit-part actor on the Academy Award-winning film.

+++

There will be Confessions at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 25, in the chapel.

Next weekend is a Nametag Weekend, and we have a meal after Saturday’s Mass.

Our Parish’s Society of St. Vincent DePaul

The parish’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul was busy last weekend.

First, they held a successful parking lot sale. Secondly, they collected returnable cans and bottles in a fundraising drive. Lastly, they had a SvdP truck parked at St. John XXIII to collect furniture, clothing, appliances, and other items for neighbors in need.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP The View from the Back of the Line

By Tracy Earl Welliver

Have you known that person? The one who leaves every person they encounter feeling a little more blessed for having met them? They’re the friend you can count on when nothing is going well. They’re the one who’s always “doing” for others. They’re never gossiping or sniping, or complaining.

We wonder how they do it, how they have it in them. We’re a little envious, even if we don’t let ourselves acknowledge it.

That, folks, is what the view is like from the front of the line, gazing at those suckers in the way back and wondering why they’re smiling so much.

We’ve all been at the front of a line and felt no shame about it. We show up early, we put in the time and the legwork, and we “earn” whatever it is we came for — sports tickets, the latest Apple product, whatever. That’s how it works here on Earth, where the fastest wins the race, the fittest survive, and always the first shall be first.

It’s precisely why stewardship is such a tall order. Stewardship calls us to play by the rules of another kingdom — one where the richest have the least amount in their bank accounts and the happiest don’t seem to have anything to show for it, at least materially.

If you have a person in your life who always seems happy “doing” for others, it’s because, by a boatload of God’s grace, they play by the rules of the other place.

Watch and take notes — and don’t be afraid to join them at the back of the line.

OUR STEWARDSHIP We need your support. Thank you for your generosity

every week and for the Catholic Services Appeal. We sincerely thank our parishioners who mail or deliver your weekly envelopes to the parish office while you

CATHOLICISM SERIES More than 30 parishioners attended the

Catholicism series on Thursday. Bishop Robert Barron asks parishioners in the first episode, “who do you say Jesus is?”

Catholicism is St. John XXIII’s Fall programming that is held 7 p.m. Thursdays for ten weeks.

PEACE & JUSTICE ... have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil designs? James 2:4

National Migration Week begins September 20 and ends with World Day of Migrants and Refugees on September 26. The theme this

year is “Toward an Ever Wider ‘We.’” Pope Francis asks us not to think in terms of “them” and “those” but only “us.”

Refugees often flee their homelands because of persecution based on race, religion, or political opinions. If selected to live in the United States, they must undergo rigorous security screenings and receive English lessons, cultural orientation, and medical evaluations. They are most thankful to live where they will not be attacked for their beliefs.

LET GO & LET GOD! By Laura Scanlan

Many scripture scholars feel that this reading from the Book of Wisdom and today’s Psalm speak of the Passion of the Lord. Both readings talk about a “just one” “…who is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings…” so they decide to torture and kill him. If he is truly just, then God will deliver and defend him. “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life.”

St. James continues to give us other ways of being

doers of the word by focusing on what was happening in the Christian community. Verses 1-12 of the third chapter of St. James tells the people how dangerous the tongue can be. He equates the tongue to the small rudder of a ship. A ship is steered by a small rudder, no matter how big the ship is. The tongue is a small part of the body but can do a lot of damage.

St. James tells us that the “human species can

tame every animal on Earth.” However, this is not true of the tongue. In the verses, we hear today, “Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom.” The wise are humble, not given to jealously or self-interest, and thus true wisdom promotes peace. St. James tells the people that they must control their impulses that lead to provoking others and seeking one’s advantage.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus is telling his

disciples for the second time that “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and three days after his death, the Son of Man will rise.” They did not understand what he was saying, and they were too scared to ask any questions. As they enter a house in Capernaum, Jesus asks the disciples what they are discussing on the way. They remained silent. They were discussing who was the greatest among them. Jesus must have been horrified. Have they learned nothing of Jesus’s humble and gentle way? Following Jesus does not lead to greatness but suffering, self-denial, and service. A child had the lowest status in that society, so Jesus shows his disciples that a child is the greatest in God’s eye.

52 SUNDAYS

Bl. Karolina Kózka (Feast Day November 18)

August 2, 1898 – November 18, 1914

Karolina grew up in a Catholic family in rural Poland in the Diocese of Tarnow. She was one of eleven children. Her family prayed daily and displayed the love of God to her. Often, Karolina

would gather neighbors and relatives, mainly children, and they would read the Scriptures together under a pear tree near her home. She loved praying the rosary, using the beads given to her by her mother. Her prayers often caused her to get less sleep than she needed.

She would pray the rosary constantly, and even though it was a long walk to Mass, she would go during the week, in addition to Sunday. Because of her love for serving, she helped her uncle in the library, and she also helped organize things at her parish. In addition to serving the Church, she taught her younger siblings and the children of the area their catechism. By age 16, Karolina was a beautiful, enthusiastic girl.

In 1914, World War I broke out in Poland, and in November 1914, the Russian army controlled her city. On November 18, an armed Russian soldier attempted to force himself on her and eventually killed her. Karolina was only 16.

Three thousand people flocked to her funeral and called for her cause for sainthood to be introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified her in Poland.
