1. Elena Antichevich 4. Dody CrawfordThe Connection to the Sea“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you...” – Isaiah 43:2

The sea has always been a reminder of God’s unfailing love for us. There’s power, grace, and peace in each encounter with the sea, and in this piece I hoped to convey our human connection with God’s beauty. Thank you Arts Alive for allowing me to be a part of this talented community of artists. @salty_lenz

As the sun slowly rises in the east, a spectacular pastel moonset is created. Sparkling warmth casts a pale pastel glow as night slowly ends and a new day begins. A genuine gift to all.

Return of MiaThis is my first time participating in the Arts Alive event. I’m always working in digital format so it was nice to get my hands dirty again. My ambition is to achieve great things within a world that is always moving forward, never stagnant, and continues to excite me every day.

Living WallWe are fortunate to be able to enjoy so many species of succulents here in San Diego. Interestingly, it was a recent trip to the New York Botanical Garden that inspired my painting. There are so many unique kinds and beautiful colors. This is my fourth year participating in Arts Alive and I love being a part of this creative community. Contact: [email protected] & shannonmartinart.weebly.com

Paparazzi and the MermaidGetting away from the paparazzi in this day and age is almost impossible, even for the elusive mermaid. Here she is, trying to blend in with her surroundings and lurking, lurking, lurking are the paparazzi...sigh.

Last ChanceThis is Gaia, the Goddess of Earth, showing us what she has generously given us. She has been patient and kind, knowing that we now have the means to properly take full responsibility for care of the planet. However, if we choose to ignore that duty, she also carries a sword. For the moment, the choice is ours. This is our last chance to do things the easy way.

Divine SparkLightning strikes Earth’s Tree of Life

The Swimming MermaidGrowing up by the ocean, I have always been inspired by the beauty of the coast! I love the way it has always brought a feeling of peace and enchantment to me. I have decided to reflect this feeling in my painting, “The Swimming Mermaid.” I hope that my use of bright colors and joyful, whimsical subject matter will bring the same sense of happiness that I feel from living in such a beautiful environment!

So Serene This ParadiseOne of my favorite sayings is, “If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it.” We are the luckiest people on Earth to live in glorious and serene San Diego County. Everyday, remind yourself to simply look around and view paradise.

Pineapple PowerI was inspired to create this piece by my recent visit to the islands of Hawaii. I’m moved and fascinated by the folklore—the use of ornament, patterns, and flow translated very often to beautiful “Tiki” totems, “Tatau” tattoo designs, and drawings showing native flora and fauna. History states - showing the greeting (sticking out of tongue) determines if you’ve come to fight or you’ve come in peace.

Heartbeat of Sea and SunI’m very thankful to Arts Alive for the opportunity to participate in this event two years in a row! I have a passion for mandalas, and these freehand designs are some of the biggest I have drawn. I let the art guide my brush to find its flow and color. This banner is the creation I didn’t know I had been envisioning.

Good Luck and WisdomFinding my place in life becoming a single mom to my 3 boys! The elephant represents courage and strength, and it has given me the courage to stay strong and get through everything life throws my way.

Summer of ‘67When I was a young girl, I often dreamed about driving a VW bus all over. I never got to fulfill this dream with the VW but managed to visit many places around the world. This old bus was parked on 101, so I decided to rekindle the dream. And, who knows, maybe I will get to go places with an electrical VW bus.The artist’s share of the proceeds from the sale of this banner will benefit Encinitas Friends of the Arts. encinitasarts.org.

Safe HavenThe brightly colored clown fish lives safely nestled into the sea anemone for protection from predators, immune from its stinging tentacles. The clown fish provides the sea anemone food from its leftovers, keeps it clean, and helps circulate the water around it, providing needful oxygen. They live together in perfect symbiotic cooperation.

Body SurfingHope you like it!

Basiliscus PlumifronsThe plumed basilisk lizard lives in the rainforests of Central America. It is known for the ability to run across the surface of water, and called the ‘Jesus Christ Lizard.’ Basilisks are arboreal, living in the trees above rivers. They are omnivorous, eating fruits and insects. Males grow up to three feet long with crests along the head, back and tail. They can also swim, holding their breath for 30 minutes.

MC Hammer Pink PantherAs a tattooer, I am always drawn to clean, bold, and captivating imagery. This year, I wanted to pay homage to my dad’s 90s-era MC Hammer pants, which always sported over the top designs and vibrant colors. I also wanted to emphasize visibility so that once the banners are hanging on the street it can be easily identified. And besides, who doesn’t like a good sassy pink panther? Instagram: Laurenalexandralux

Surfer DeerI really like deer because I think they’re so cool looking, and I thought it would be amusing to have an animal that is not typically associated with the beach holding a surfboard and standing in a human-like position. I had a lot of fun painting this piece.

The Wishing TreeI started off painting a mermaid with a palm tree hairdo over by the wishing tree between Swami’s and Moonlight. The mermaid quickly turned into a version of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She gives me hope. Her appearance was a pivotal political turn for the Aztecs to accept change in their custom and put an end to the annual sacrifice of at least 20,000 men, women, and children.

Big Beach, Little HumansThis piece was incredibly fun to paint and was inspired by the beaches I’ve visited and the awesome, diverse people I’ve met along the way. I plan to donate 5% of the artist’s share of the sale proceeds to Just In Time which supports foster youth exiting the system. 41. Jim McConlogueStone Steps BeachA few years ago, I was commissioned to create a series of banners for downtown Encinitas. 49. Grace Swanson & Marilyn Shayegan Walking With Daddy

“Walking With Daddy” is a father and daughter at the Oceanside Pier. It is a metaphor for walking with God as your Father. We are his children and He is a perfect loving Father. God is Love and he loves you.

SplashThis banner represents a celebration of the ocean—so appropriate in San Diego’s coastal landscape where dolphins play in the waves, surfers ride the crest, children explore tide pools, and onlookers enjoy the fiery hues of sunsets reflected on the sea.

Thresher SharkThe Thresher shark is a beautiful marine creature that swims right along the coast where the Arts Alive banners hang. Threshers use their long, graceful tails to stun little fish, then eat them. Sadly, Thresher sharks were just added to the list of endangered species under the Endangered Species Act, so this banner is painted for them.

Valley of the QuailThe untouched southwestern landscape is a Quail’s happy place. The Quail is a symbol of California’s hardiness to thrive in places that may look a bit prickly and barren, but in reality, are beautiful, safe places where the Quail is free to roam and raise its family. It is important that we protect these special spaces for wildlife and nature to thrive.

These days I invest much of my free time fishing our beautiful waters and have become a fanatic of the local fishery. My work focuses on the magic of the ocean, its creatures and its mystique as seen through my own eyes, with elements of a street style.

Paradox of EquinoxEquinox—when day and night are of equal length. This piece incorporates the Sea Otter, viewed by Ancients as representative of the Spirit of Aquarius for its ability to dive deep into darkness and back up to light again. Led by the Honeybee which flies between day and night, land and water, the Otter reconciles and integrates the duality of light and dark, both within and without, as above so below—paradox.

Clowning AroundThe antics of the Clown fish never fail to amuse as they swim and dart within their anemone homes. This is the fifth banner of Leucadia artist, Jeanette Shires, depicting the wonderful variety of our ocean.

Go FishBeing a tattoo artist and surfer in Encinitas now for 20 years, I drew my inspiration for the banner from my love for Japanese stylized water “finger waves” and my respect for the amazing surfboard builders who have been crafting boards in this community for the past half-century.
