Expanding the Boundaries of Superconductors

What we do

Our portfolio includes high-performance and high-quality Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn

superconductors. They can carry up to 100 times the current of conventional

copper at the same sizes. In addition, superconductors have virtually zero

electrical resistance, which makes them ideal for electrical systems that

require ultra-high stability and low energy consumption, such as high field

magnets.

Our Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn superconductor products are used globally in MRI

(Magnetic Resonance Imaging), NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Spectroscopy), cancer therapy, semiconductor production, and large scale

high energy physics research. Customers use our products to extend tech

nological limits and rely on our expertise in tailoring superconductors pre-

cisely to their demanding requirements.

Furthermore, Bruker EST performs research to investigate the technological

and commercial potential of new superconductors, which may broaden the

use of energy-saving technology in the future.

Nb-Ti-based superconductors are by far the most widely produced

and used superconductors today. They offer reliable and very high

performance at excellent economics and meet the requirements of

most applications around the world.

BEST provides a wide range of custom Nb3Sn conductors that are

developed and built in close cooperation with customers, based on

very specific requirements. These may be manufactured using the

Rod-Restack Process (RRP®) Internal-Tin, PIT (Powder in Tube), or

bronze route methods.

With over 50 years of experience and leadership in superconductivity,

it is our mission to be the world’s premier supplier of superconductor

products and solutions. Based on our proven values of providing

superior flexibility, reliability and quality standards, we support

our customers and partners with state-of-the-art superconductors

As of 19801980 Optimized VACRYFLUX-wire types are sold in increasing quan-tities for the MRI system market. VAC manufactures 20 tons of Nb-Ti wire to build the “Euratom coil”.One of 6 D-shaped coils used at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (TN, USA) to build the Tokamak fusion experiment LCT (Large Coil Task).

1962-65As part of VAC (Vacuumschmelze), R&D begins on superconducting alloy NbZr, later Nb-Ti and the processing of Cu/Nb-Ti composite conductors. Research & Develop-ment begins in Murray Hill, New Jersey as part of Airco for applica-tions that would utilize the growing supply of liquid helium.

1984First wire-in-channel conductor for MRI is produced in Carteret NJ. This conductor type gains strong acceptance and grows to become the highest volume share of the wire used in MRI’s globally.

As of 1970VACRYFLUX conductor development for NMR applications, e.g.: thin fila-ments, twisting, CuNi matrix switch wires as well as the introduction of the first bronze route wires for NMR applications.
