I am fun, creative, responsible, loyal, spontaneous, perfectionist, smart, and colorful. I am a fourth year Interior Design major. My design process continues to evolve every sing le day. I ’ve come a long way since I ’ve started, but I sti l l have a lot to learn. My desire is to create beautiful yet functional spaces that move people in even small ways. I want to better each individual and the world through design. To me, design is a constant learning process, always studying what the greats have done and what today’s designers are doing.

01 D B V Wworkplace designThe Edge in Cincinnati, OH | fall 2014

Fall semester interior design studio was a workplace design studio. Working with an actual office building located in downtown Cincinnati, we chose and profiled a firm to design an office space for them as if they were moving their business to Cincinnati. I chose DBVW, an architecture and interior design firm in Providence, RI, because of their work in historical preservation, adaptive reuse and sustainability. To them preservation and sustainability are intrinsically linked, acting as a source of inspiration. I am passionate about these values and was excited to design for a firm that shared these priorities. DBVW has a relaxed and close-knit firm culture. They are veryha nds-on and believe the client is an important part of the design process. I chose as the office space the south half of the 5th floor so I could create access to the roof, providing an outdoor alternative work environment and views. I focused on incorporating sustainable elements into the workspace to support the firms values and creating an open, comfortable work environment that promoted collaboration.

02 BLOC CHILDRENS ONCOLOGY CENTERMASON, OHIO | spring 2014

This studio sought to mimic interdisciplinary firms by creating groups that included an interior designer, an architect, and graphic designers. Within the healthcare theme provided, we chose to design a childrens oncology center. Our goal was to create a wholistic environment that was playful, educational, and incorporated nature for the children. While branding our healthcare center, we discovered the word “bloc” - a combination of countries, parties, or groups sharing a common purpose - which embodied how we imagined the staff and design coming together to support the children. The name became our guiding design idea, and we incorporated the orthogonal principle in the interiors and way finding. Working with graphic designers presented the challenge of communicating architectural ideas to those who aren’t familiar with them. However, it was outweighed by the benefit of collaborating with graphic designers and discovering how the two professions can work together to create a more cohesive and engaging space.

This project was designed to help familiarize us with wood shop in preparation for designing and building our chair in the Furniture studio. I created a set of coasters that slide into eachother to create its own ‘box’ when not in use.

Letter press christmas cardsFall 2014

I designed and created these christmas cards as a part of the Letter Press Club’s Christmas fundraiser. Aside from being incredibly fun to make, these improved my printing technique and creative type-setting ability, as well as my ability to work with fonts graphically.

DEER CHAIR

I took a furniture design and construction class in which the focus project was designing and building a chair. My chair started out as an idea of “whimsical”, based on wanting this chair to call out to people and delight them. It’s not so much about sitting in the chair, but becoming the chair so to speak. Through life-size study models, I figured out how to place the antlers and hooves so that when seated, you quite literally become the deer. This chair is a marriage of modern, traditional, and surreal, making it fascinating to look at and fun to sit in. Designing and then constructing a piece of furniture provided insight into the fundamentals of design construction.

04 UFFIZI GALLERY EXITFLORENCE, ITALY | Fall 2013

During the fall of my third year, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy through Kent State’s Architecture program. Our biggest project was to design a modern exit worthy of the Uffizi Gallery, which currently dumps visitors out onto a back street with no landmark in sight. I designed a space that gradually introduces visitors back into Florence. Here a person emerges from a cramped gallery into an open, modern space, then to a piazza shared by Florentines and museum-goers alike. The transparent structure invites interaction between the inside and outside, opening up a view into the surroundings. I designed steps through the piazza to encourage people to slow down and take one more chance to reflect before continuing on their journey. I have always been passionate about historic preservation and this project was a great way to practice applying these skills. Designing a space for modern needs for a five-thousand year old building was a challenge that enhanced my rendering and design process.

05 C a p s t o n eUrban farm centerCincinnati, OH | spring 2015Capstone for Interior Design is a year long process that involves in-depth independent research aorund a topic I am passionate about and addressing the issue with a design project. There is a disconnect between where food comes from and the average American, resulting in a lack of knowledge about how food can impact themselves and the environment.Likewise, farmers that practice sustainable farming do not always receive the support they need. My goal was to use design to bridge the gap, interweaving growing, learning and eating to benefit the individual, community, and the farmers.I created an urban farm center where a community could come together to grow, learn about, and eat, transforming organic food from an end product to a part of their daily lives. The farm itself and the farmer’s market introduce and educate people to locally grown and healthy food products. Three different restaurant experiences- casual, demonstration dinner, and cook & eat -bring people together over good food and addresses what to do after the food is picked. The biggest challenge was creating harmony and promoting interaction between four very distinct spaces. I used visual connections to create interest and shared materials between spaces to promote continuity. This project is a cumulation of skills I’ve learned over the past four years, creating visually interesting and spacially connected experiences that meet the goal I set out to complete
