DEAR SUPPORTERS AND FRIENDS,

Thank you for caring about

the youth in our community.

Your diligent commitment

has created pathways to

possibilities for thousands

of children who at one point

thought unimaginable. Through

partnerships, volunteerism, and

financial stewardship, supporters

like you make these one-to-one

relationships flourish into lifelong

friendships that changes a child’s

trajectory for success.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas our focus is prevention. We empower, enable and ignite

the potential that resides within every child. Our vision is that all children achieve success. We do this by

facilitating mentorship relationships that expose children to opportunities that will deter them from wanting

to drop out of school; teaching them coping skills and confidence building exercises to help them avoid risky

behaviors that could lead to juvenile detention; and providing them with tools, connections, and resources to

begin to close the opportunity gap. We are working toward ending generational poverty for good.

Currently, we are serving over 1,400 children in three counties, but the need is so great! We continuously seek

to collaborate with other agencies in the community to reach more children and broaden our impact. FY 2019

was a strong year and we are looking forward to an even brighter 2020!

Together we can Empower Potential!

BIGS WITH BADGES (BWB)

BWB started in 2017 and was

originally known as Bigs in

Blue. This program began as

a way to connect police officers

with children (Littles) in

communities in which they

serve, through one-to-one

mentoring. It has since been

expanded to include

first responders.

BEYOND SCHOOL WALLS(BSW)

Local companies host middle schoolers at their corporate office

to connect with their mentors. Twice a month students arepresented with a workforce

readiness curriculum designed to facilitate practical skills that

include public speaking, financialmanagement, and workplace

etiquette; while spending quality time with their Big.

BSW launched in 2012.

CHILDREN OF FAMILIES IN TRANSITION (COFIT)

In partnership with A Child’s Place, COFIT started in 2017 with the help of a private donor. It was a way for

Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide mentors for children whose families lacked permanent housing. COFIT pro-

vides parenting resources for parents and Bigsto continue to build and establish stability and positive

influences in children’s lives.

STUDENTS UNDERSTANDING COLLEGE AND CAREERS THROUGH EDUCATION, SKILLS, & SUPPORT (SUCCESS)

Launched in 2018, SUCCESS gives current matches monthly opportunities and experiences focusing on topics such as SAT prep, finding the right college, workforce interviewing, and hands-on job skills with a

focus on earning a living wage.

HIGH SCHOOL BIGSOur High School Bigs program connects high school students in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus

counties with elementary school students. These friendships build self-confidencein Littles and mentoring skills in young

people. The High School Bigs program was started in 2004.

RETIREMENT ASSETS Properly

structured retirement assets grow

tax-free, and for some individuals,

eventually exceed actual needs.

By designating Big Brothers Big

Sisters of Central Carolinas as a

full or partial beneficiary, funds

pass free of taxes.

JOIN OUR LEGACY SOCIETY & EMPOWER THE FUTUREYou can make a gift to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central

Carolinas at no cost to you during your lifetime. The following

options are ways your legacy gift can grow and strengthen a

child’s potential for years to come. Become a member of our

Legacy Society and Empower the Future of our community for

generations to come!

LIFE INSURANCE By making a charitable organization the beneficiary, you retain lifetime ownership of the policy. You have the right to cash it in, borrow against it, and change the beneficiary. There are no current tax benefits and the gross proceeds will be included in your estate with an equal charitable deduction. You may also transfer ownership of a life insurance policy to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas, or purchase a new policy with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas as owner and beneficiary.

WILLS & BEQUESTS A bequest is a gift of assets or property to a

beneficiary. It is the easiest gift to make with no or minimal out of

pocket expense to establish and is revocable if you change your will

prior to death. Because a charitable bequest can reduce estate taxes,

it often results in long-term tax benefits.

STOCKS Appreciated assets, such as common stock or mutual fund shares, can generate capital gains tax if sold. By giving them as a charitable gift, you avoid capital gains tax and receive a charitable tax deduction based on current market value.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST A charitable remainder trust establishes income for you and/or beneficiaries. The income period can be a specified period of time under 20 years, or for the life of the income beneficiary (or beneficiaries). Then the charity receives the remaining balance in

the trust.

Jaya and Dixie met 9 years ago when Jaya was a

participant in the school-based mentoring program.

Jaya was a young girl with immense talent and

motivation but struggled with reading which led to low

self-esteem and began to encumber her life. However,

with consistent support and encouragement from

Dixie, Jaya began to flourish.

Years later, now within the community-based program,

Dixie and Jaya continue to meet to work on school

assignments, discuss college options and explore the

possibilities for her future. Dixie remains a consistent

support for Jaya, and maintains that she is always

just a phone call away. Not only does Dixie provide

consistency for Jaya, but Dixie has also exposed Jaya to

new experiences and opportunities that are building

the foundation for Jaya’s future success. Four years

ago, Dixie took Jaya on a day trip to Raleigh, North

Carolina. Jaya was thrilled about her first train ride and

exploring a new city.

Today, Jaya is a 10th grader who is known for her

fearless drive and confident attitude. She continues

to work hard in school while keeping a positive

mindset. Jaya’s mother says that this experience with

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas has

contributed to so much of Jaya’s growth and that “to

this day Jaya lights up whenever she gets to see her big

sister and is happy she has another person in her life

who truly cares for her.”

BIG BROTHER YEARWhen Jayden’s grandmother enrolled him in the Big

Brothers Big Sisters program in 2015, what she hoped

for was a positive male role model. When Alex came into

their lives, it was clear that he was going to be much more.

Alex’s quick wit, ambitious nature, and positive personality

impacts everyone around him. Alex has been not only a

mentor to Jayden, but as Jayden fondly refers to him, his

best friend. Alex was by Jayden’s side in the hospital when

his great-grandmother passed away. Alex has taken Jadeyn

to dozens of sporting events, volunteered throughout our

community with him, and challenged him with summer

reading lists. Alex’s consistency and dependability helped

create comfort and stability in Jayden’s life and Jayden’s

grandmother is extremely grateful for their connection.

Alex keeps Jayden focused by setting goals and celebrating

his successes. Alex’s fondness of travel has opened Jayden’s

eyes to new cultures and food and sparked Jayden’s

curiosity about the world. He even eats seaweed now!

Alex’s influence on Jayden’s life reaches beyond his close-

knit friendship with Jayden and his family, but also into his

academic life. Although Alex loves to have fun with Jayden,

it was critical for him to ensure Jayden receives the best

possible education. With Alex’s support, Jayden was entered

into a lottery for a sought after charter school and Jayden

was accepted last year. Jayden now has access to new

opportunities and organizations at his new school, building

the foundation for his future success.

THE QUALITY AWARDFor the last two years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central

Carolinas (BBBSCC) has been presented with the National

Quality Award. The National Quality award recognizes Big

Brothers Big Sisters agencies that have met the criteria for

the number of children served and the amount of revenue

received throughout the 2018 calendar year. To receive this

award, BBBSCC achieved a community-based and site-based

retention rate higher than the national average. The Quality

award is a result of the hard work and dedication BBBSCC has

put into empowering the youth in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, and

York county. With the commitment of the staff, our board, and

outstanding volunteers, we proudly accepted this award at the

2019 National Conference, that we hosted in Charlotte.
