She decided to volunteer after losing her husband in 2005. Margaret met Little Sister Victoria, now 14, a few years later and the two have been matched for the past four years. She has helped to guide Victoria through difficult times, yet despite those challenges, Margaret and Victoria continue to meet each week and have forged a deep relationship. The impact Margaret has had on Victoria’s life is immeasurable, whether its personal challenges, help with school, or just advice on healthy eat- ing, she is there for her Little Sister. Yet, Margaret always insists that she has received more than she has given. Big Brother of the Year is Jody Kamisato, ukulele virtuoso, owner/instructor at the music studio Ukulele Hale and half of the local band ‘Heart & Soul’. Jody has been matched with Little Brother Skyler, 9, for the past three years. They meet up consistently and have become part of one another’s family. Jody is the consummate mentor and has started a tradition of teaching Skyler a new word or idea every time they are together. Skyler must practice using the word and report back to Jody on their next outing. Skyler, who has no contact with his biological father, summed it up perfectly when he thanked Jody for being “the best Big Brother because you take me on lots of cool adventures!” High School Big of the Year is Miche MacMahan, a senior attending Aiea High School and finishing her third and final year matched with her Little Brother Matthew at the Pearlridge Elementary program. Matthew entered the program as a shy fourth grader who has since shown improvement in his confidence, manners, and academic motivation. It is known by school staff that he struggles with his behavior in school, but his attitude and actions change for the better when he is with Miche. They have a positive connection and their goal is for Matthew to have the same demeanor both in and outside of the program. Miche says, “I make sure he knows I’m not just saying encouraging things just to say it. He knows I truly believe in him.” Miche plans to attend New York University to study journalism. Adult School-Based Big of the Year is Ellis Matro, who has been a volunteer and involved in three different programs with BBBSH since 2007. Not only an exceptional Big Brother, Ellis has also been instrumental in helping to expand BBBSH’s programs. As a Maryknoll High School student, he helped to bring the School-Based program to Maryknoll Elementary, using his fellow classmates as volunteers. After graduating, Ellis also helped to form a Site-Based Plus pro- gram at Maili Land Transitional Shelter with volunteers from his young adults ministry at New Hope Diamond Head. Although Ellis will be leaving BBBSH to continue his degree in Public Administration at UH West Oahu, his legacy and influence will continue on through these programs. Message from the President

Start Something!

Big Brothers Big Sisters wants you to get involved by joining our campaign to raise more money, recruit more volunteers, serve more children and have greater impact on our whole community:

• What if every child who could benefit from having a one-to-one mentor had one?• How would the families of those children be affected?• What would be the impact of those children be on their classmates and friends at school? In their neighborhoods?

Our goal is to create, support and sustain longer, stronger match relationships. Research shows that our programs achieve positive outcomes for children when matches last and strong relationships develop between the Big Brother/Big Sister and their Little Brother/Little Sister. The longer a Big and Little are together, the more the Big can persuade the Little away from unhealthy, risky behavior. The stronger the relationship between a Big and Little is, a trust develops that helps the child become more resilient against negative influences.

We believe that every child we match will have his or her life changed for the better, forever. We believe this because our results show that a high percentage of our kids stay in school, make healthy choices, feel better about themselves, and become active members of our community.

Sound like a good thing? You can help us Start Something today! Call 695-4571 to donate; 695-4568 to volunteer; or visit us at www.bigshonolulu.org.

Mahalo,

President/CEO

Glimpses By Case Managers Although they’ve on been match for 2 months, Little Brother Paul and Big Brother Michael Baldovino are having so much fun together! On March 3rd, they showcased their artwork from the Kaimiloa Elementary School site’s Art To Go Exhibition and really took pride in their artistic accom-plishments. (photo) In May 2010, Little Sister Sonija was matched with Big Sister Tanya Yamada for the Jarrett Middle Site-Based Plus program. The two enjoy the cooking, art, and field trips each month with other matches. They also check in with each other often during the school week since Tanya is part of the staff at Jarrett. Sonija described their recent movie outing as “the best day I ever had!” Little Brother Taualai and Big Sister Sherilyn Sakamoto have been matched since October in the Maili Land SB+ program. They’ve done all kinds of fun things together like doing community ser-vice, playing makahiki games and hiking at Waimea Valley Park. Most recently, they enjoyed making chopstick lanterns, which was followed by a pizza party and games. Big Sister Sonya Kim and Little Sister Krystal are a new match that immediately hit it off. After one of their initial outings the Krystal asked Sonya if they could hang out the next day! Sonya was actually a Little Sister in our program when she was a child. She said that she would love to recon-nect with her former Big Sister and thank her for the time she invested in her. With a little bit of work we were able to contact her former Big Sister who is also eager to reconnect! (photo) Big Sister Felicia Laster has been tremendously creative and enthusiastic since being matched with Little Sister Arianna in January. They have had a tea party, made bracelets, built sand castles, baked sweets, and before Felicia left on her 5 week trip out of the country, she made Arianna a card and a beaded necklace, letting her know that she will send a postcard from her trip. Arianna, who was very shy at their first meeting, is now quite comfortable, talkative and having a great time! After waiting 3 ½ years, Little Brother Kyle was recently matched with Big Brother Chris Lade! Kyle, now 14, was starting to wonder if he was too old to be matched until he met Chris, who is in the Air Force and shares many of the same interests. Kyle and his mom could not have been happier, especially since Kyle has been enthralled with the Air Force and airplanes most of his life! Their first outing was to Chris’s Air Force Base and needless to say, Kyle was all grins. (photo)

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu is scheduled to launch the Silver Anniversary BFKS Fundraiser, to be held on Saturday, August 6th, Sunday, August 7th and Saturday, August 13th at Aiea Bowl.

This year’s event aims to raise a record $400,000 for the organization’s youth men-toring programs on Oahu. Last year, the Honolulu Bowl for Kids’ Sake event was, per capita, BBBS America’s top fundraiser nationwide, raising more than $300,000. This year’s Space Odyssey theme encourages participants to come dressed in their favorite “out of this world” costume.

For more information, please contact Amanda Corby at 783-1407 or [email protected] or log on to www.bfkshonolulu.org.

On February 11, Robert Palma Designs and Moore Ideas held its “Carnival of Love” char-ity event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu at Apartment 3 in Century Center. The fundraiser featured an evening of glitz and glamour as Robert Palma showcased his jewelry designs accompanied by delectable food and drinks, roving entertainment, prize drawings, caricature artist, and silent auction. The event raised close to $1,000 to support BBBSH’s one-to-one mentoring youth programs.

Doesn’t it feel nice to be recognized for good work? We think so too! Our annual vol-unteer recognition event, recently renamed The Big Celebration, is one of the ways that we say thank you to all our Bigs for the work you do for youth and our commu-nity. The picture perfect weather at Ala Moana Beach Park provided the backdrop for activities including volleyball, tug-o-war (our staff apologizes for those who “pulled” against team BBBSH), dance competitions, pie eating contests, an obstacle course, and yes…even the our BBBSH money vault! And what could be better than paring fun in the sun with ‘ono bentos, shaved-ice and popcorn! Aside from the food and activities, the BBBSH community honored our high school Big of the Year and our School-Based Adult Big of the year. Congratulations to Miche and Ellis!

We thank those of you who were able to attend along with all of our volunteer Bigs. We value the work that you do and will continue to celebrate your efforts. We look for-ward to next year’s Big Celebration as our BBBSH community grows. See you there!

On Saturday, March 5, 2011, Kauai Big Brothers Big Sisters held their 2nd An-nual Bowl For Kids Sake benefit. The “T-Birds” and “Pink Ladies” were out in full swing when over 170 supporters participated in the Greased Lightnin’ bowl at the Lihue Bowling Lanes…

The event raised over $20,000 and included support from over 50 sponsors and donors from Kauai and Honolulu. Kauai’s Mayor Bernard Carvalho rolled the first ball, Ron Wiley from Kong Radio and Mike Dandurand from Kustom Sounds Emcee’d and West Side Smitty provided his upbeat 50’s & 60’s Rock N’ Roll! The Top Corporate Business and fundraiser was Mark’s Place & Con-temporary Flavors and Top individual fundraisers included Yukie DeSilva from The Garden Island Newspaper and Cathy Shibuya also of Mark’s Place.

It was a night of fun and excitement and Kauai Big Brothers Big Sisters was able to more than double the amount raised during the 1st Bowl For Kids’ Sake held in 2010! It was a great success!

Real life brothers, Justin and Taylor Langstaff are two Kapaa High School students who vol-unteer with Kauai Big Brothers Big Sisters. Every Wednesday, they spend a couple of hours being a mentor and friends to their Little Brothers at Kapaa Middle School. The Langstaff brothers also find time to participate in school sports and most recently helped their soc-cer team go undefeated on Kauai and finish 2nd in the state Championships. Their ability to balance sports, school, make time for their own personal interests, and volunteer as Big Brothers shows what amazing things are possible when you are driven to succeed and help others to do the same.

All of Kauai’s 6 School-Based programs have the privilege of working with excellent Art To Go instructors. The matches were able to tap into their creative side and come up with beautiful artwork. Some of the art projects included wired recycled sculptures, chocolart (edible chocolate designs), reverse painting, and Australian Aborigines art design. Art projects like these give the matches the opportunity to START SOMETHING, get to know one another and build solid relation-ships!

Currently, we have 39 potential Littles that are waiting to be matched with a mentor. Julia-Naomi is one of those children and a 13 year old 7th grader at Kailua Intermediate School. She enjoys drawing Japanese anime characters, listening to rock music and playing games on her computer. She may appear to be very shy and quiet, but is actually a very outgoing, social, polite and friendly person. Julia-Naomi lives in the Waimanalo area with her adoptive parents and siblings. She is looking forward to hanging out with a Big Sister and would really benefit from having a positive female mentor and friend.

If you or anyone you know would be a perfect Big for Julia-Naomi or other potential Littles like her, please contact our Customer Rela-tions Specialist, Manny DeVera at (808) 521-3811 ext. 1228 or [email protected].

Big Wanted: For Little Sister Julia-Naomi!

Kauai’s Case Manager Daniel Sanchez with Ele’ele & Kapa’a School matches.

Little Brother Nathanial had been telling his Big Brother, John Hol-man, that he wanted to go fishing for quite some time, he had never been fishing before but had heard it was lot of fun.

When John received an email from his match support specialist in-dicating that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu was putting to-gether a fishing match activity in February, he quickly signed up.

So on a rainy day at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe, John, Nathanial and 12 other matches went fishing and had a blast. Nathanial caught seven fish that day and discovered how much fun fishing can be. Everyone that gave fishing a shot ended up catch-ing something, and most said they wanted to come back and try again soon. Happily, this story ends well for all involved, even the fish that were caught that day were released back into the water in good shape.

All of the Kauai’s 6 site-based programs had the privileged of working with excellent Art To Go instructors. The matches were able to tap into their creative side and come up with beautiful art-work.

Thank you to all of our ohana for your continued support of our youth mentoring programs. We couldn’t do any of this without your help. Check out our website to see the many ways that the community can get involved with our organization. Please help spread the word about our good work!

02 The Magical Times Jan/Feb/Mar 2011

(photo)

Big Sister of the Year is Margaret Malone, a nurse by training and the Direc-tor of Quality Assurance and Training at Parents and Children Together (PACT), Margaret has dedicated her life to serving others. The impact Margaret has had on Victoria’s life is immeasurable, whether its personal challenges, help with school, or just advice on healthy eat-ing, she is there for her Little Sister. After graduating, Ellis also helped to form a Site-Based Plus pro-gram at Maili Land Transitional Shelter with volunteers from his young adults ministry at New Hope Diamond Head. Although Ellis will be leaving BBBSH to continue his degree in Public Administration at UH West Oahu, his legacy and influence will continue on through these programs. Congratulations to all of our 2011 Bigs of the Year!
