When Bob James took the first steps toward establishing this firm, times
were simpler – stocks were still tracked and traded by hand and the Dow
Jones Industrial Average closed the year just above 652. But even then, Bob
realized that the business of investing needed to be done differently, and it
would require a different kind of firm to do it well. People needed plans that
looked beyond the next trade, and advisors needed a company that would
treat them as valuable partners, not distribution outlets.

1962 Bob James founds Robert A. James Investments.
1970 Tom James is named CEO.
1973 Raymond James takes a seat on the New York Stock Exchange.
1974 IM&R (later Raymond James Financial Services) reactivates as a broker/dealer.
1983 Raymond James completes $14 million IPO.
1964 Robert A. James Investments merges with Raymond and Associates.
