    Employees want more information. We all know Knowledge is Power and we all want to be more powerful.

    People want to find out where their organization is going and how it is going to get there.Employee Communications are Very Important!

    A recent study revealed that of 10,000 employees, workers said the top 2 motivatorsare appreciation of their work and being in on things. - Higher wages was chosen 5th!

    Another study: workers perform best in a work environment - understand the companys goals & financial status.

    Positive relationship between employee satisfaction & communication.

    As telecommuting and job sharing change the definition of workplace. Its becoming very difficult for employers to communicate to their employees.

    In a recent report, the U.S. Department of Labor found that: 1 in 10 workers is employed on an alternative work basis part time, flex time, etc. 80% of employers offer some form of nontraditional staffing arrangements. 47% of employees telecommute during at least part of their work week.

    The importance of employee communications and the difficulties that management has communicating with all employees are topics relevant to organizations of any size and shape.

    But, as the marketing & communications manager of WFI,I needed to determine the comm. needs of WFI.WFI subsidiary of WF offers all types of insurance in person, phone, internet, mail. Headquarters Mpls

    WFI knows the importance of communications.Has employees located around the country most at home office, but some office in banks, at home, trunks.Suspect communications needs are not being met especially by those they are not located at our home office because they cant interact.

    The only formal communication from the President of our company right now are special emails for announcements or important news items.

    Weve heard employees talk about a newsletter and thought implementing one would make employees feel more informed.

    So we determined what a newsletter could do for us.We thought that a newsletter would be: An effective means of making sure employees could stay connected no matter what their status or location.Address employees need for appreciation and desire to be involved.improve communications, address employee concerns, educate,publicize goals and celebrate achievements.

    But instead of simply implementing a newsletter, we wanted to survey our employees to see what they thought.

    My research goals were to determineI surveyed the 175 employees of WFI 115 at our headquarters in Minneapolis, 60 located around the country.

    I surveyed the Wells Fargo Insurance employees because I have the ability to influence the communications decisions within our organization.

    I interoffice mailed a survey with a cover letter that asked them to complete the survey and a drawing card.

    The drawing card was used to enter the respondents name into a prize drawing yet kept the surveys anonymous.

    They were instructed to mail the survey back to me and the drawing card back to someone else in my department.

    If they returned both items within one week, they were eligible for 1 of 5 $25 gift certificates.75% response rateUncovered significant findingsSomething very interesting to note was there were no significant differences between our employees located at our home office and those located throughout the country.One significant research finding was determined after I asked the audience Will regular communication make you more connected with Wells Fargo Insurance?

    92% of employees indicated that receiving information on a regular basis would make them feel more connected to Wells Fargo Insurance.

    We werent sure what kind of response to expect on their feeling connected, so we were pleasantly surprised to see such a high response.

    Another key question I asked was, Would an employee newsletter make you more informed about WFI?

    Over 80% of team members agreed that a newsletter would make them more informed about Wells Fargo Insurance.

    We assumed this number would be high and the 80% confirmed our assumption.

    I also asked employees, Which sources of information would help you understand the corporate objectives of Wells Fargo Insurance better? They were given 5 sources of info to rank including:Emails, Managersand recognition events which we currently have in place

    Newsletter and town hall meetings with the President which we do not currently have in place.

    63% chose newsletters as their 1st or 2nd choice, 45% chose managers as their 1st or 2nd choice 43% chose town hall meetings as their 1st or 2nd choice.One blatant question: Would you like a WFI employee newsletter?

    89% of employees indicated they would like a newsletter.

    Since we anticipated this number to be high, we asked several specific questions regarding newsletters.

    When responding to, What format would you like an employee newsletter?

    49% reported they would prefer an emailed newsletter, 37% preferred a paper version.

    I actually expected the paper version to be the preferred method but email was preferred slightly. When responding to, How frequently would you like a newsletter? 47% of respondents selected 4 times per year. 27% chose 12 times per year. 21% chose 6 times per year.

    So 95% want newsletter between 4 and 12 times/year.When employees were asked, If you have questions about the company, who would you most like to ask?

    57% of respondents prefer to ask their manager questions at a staff meeting. 10% of the respondents would like to ask the president questions at a town hall meeting. 28% of the respondents would like to ask their questions to a newsletter editor. There were 9 respondents who selected other. The write in responses included mail slot and anonymously.

    This question the only one we asked about 2 way communications - opened a whole new can of worms for us a topic for more research.

    We need to have a serious discussion about 2 way communication based on this finding.

    And we also need to make sure our managers are informed that the majority of our employees want to get company information from them. They need to be alert and be an information provider.Because of this survey, we are going to implement a newsletter and much more.

    Repeat survey annuallyConduct another survey these results have peaked our curiosity about 2 way communications so I think we should conduct a whole new study.
