Recognizing Our Champions

This week I was very pleased to be able to join other members of our ‘ohana, as we honored the Employees of the Quarter (EOQ) who work in Waikiki. There were so many inspiring stories about individuals performing at the highest level during the first three months of 2010. Quite a few of the citations mentioned extraordinary performance and response in late February when an enormous earthquake in Chile generated a tsunami that headed out into the Pacific, with the Hawaiian Islands directly in its path. overturned, it is not only travelers who are affected. Workers at every level in Travel & Tourism are called upon to quickly fill in, perform additional services, and adapt to the rapidly-changing needs of the moment. That was exactly what happened in Hawaii, when the potential tsunami approached in February. This week, halfway around the globe in Europe, chaos ensued as the Eyjafjallajokull (ay-ayh-FYAH-lah-yer-kuhl) volcano in Iceland spewed ash into the atmosphere, shutting down about a third of the world’s commercial air traffic. Millions of travelers were suddenly stranded, and legions of Travel & Tourism workers were toiling around the clock, struggling to adapt to the new situation. The cancellation of flights to, from, and within Europe had relatively little effect on our company’s operations in the Pacific. But can you imagine what your life might have been like this past week if you were working at the Front Desk, in Housekeeping, or at a restaurant in a hotel near almost any airport in Europe? On a personal note, I know that my daughter Anne Marie Kelley, a Member Service Manager for Exclusive Resorts in Denver, Colorado, and others in her department have been working overtime to find alternative accommodations and transportation for customers traveling to or from Exclusive’s properties in Europe. At press time, the eruption in Iceland is waning, and commercial flights are beginning to resume in Europe, but there is a huge backlog of passengers that will take a week or

Recognizing Our ChampionsContinued from page 1

two to clear, assuming the volcanoes in Iceland cooperate. The threat of new volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and other natural disasters remains, not only in Iceland, but many other places around the world, including the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire,” close to many Outrigger and OHANA operations. Of course, it is almost impossible to predict the extent of volcanic activity – think of Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii, which has been erupting continuously since 1983! – so we really have no way of knowing if Eyjafjallajokull will continue to quiet down, or if its activity will pick up and once again play havoc with air travel. I am tempted to wonder what the consequences would have been if the off-the-charts eruptions of Krakatoa (Indonesia, 1883) or Santorini (Greece, around 1645 B.C.) had happened in the modern

age. I suspect that events like these would probably shut aviation down, worldwide, for months, with unimaginable economic fallout. Fortunately, eruptions of such magnitude and violence don’t happen very often. There will always be challenges for the people who work in Travel & Tourism. I am proud to say that at Outrigger and OHANA Hotels & Resorts, we have some of the finest people in the world ready to handle whatever challenge we might need to confront. Many of those individuals were recognized this week in our EOQ ceremonies. My congratulations and thanks to each of you for the great job you do every day throughout the year.
