AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THETRANSMISSION OF HEALINGENERGY VIA THE INTERNETFrancesca McCartney, Ph.D.

ABSTRACTThis research studies the intentional intuitive imprinting of healing energies onto a CD-ROM andtransmission of these energies via Internet email toa trained intuitive recipient. This study operationallydefines "intentional imprinting" as the act of using conscious thought to condition a healing energy ontoan object. This study sought to test Internet email as a holder of intentional sensorial resonance, andthe World Wide Web within the Internet, as a carrier of this energy-information; and to explore animplied evolution of the sense of intuition. This study conditionally proposes that an intuitive person canopen an email and receive the emotional and cognitive content of its sender's intentionally imprintedinformation. This study seeks new information signifIcant to distance healing research within the medical, parapsychology, and noetic sciences; and to inspire and identify fertile areas for further cross-disciplinaryexploration. The main outcome measures are simple binomial success rates, reported as percentages. Inthis research study, success is defIned as both the correct detection and correct identification of theintentional imprinted healing energy by the intuitive recipients. Main results: Relative to a 25% chanceof success, the Total Success Rate is 31. 9%, which supports the research hypothesis (p 0.021).

    INTRODUCTION

T he focus of this research is limited toone area of experimental investigation:intuition-based communication via theInternet. This project broadly explores thepossibilities of subtle-thought communication within the Internet and the affect onemail users. The hypothesis studied here is that healingenergy can be intentionally imprinted into anemail text message and sent via the Internetto an intended recipient. This hypothesisdeveloped during the year 2000 from thisresearcher's observations of a five-monthhealing energy email exchange between twoIntuition Medicine practitioners. 1,2The idea for this research came from anexperience the author had as a teacher ofprofessional intuitives at the Academy ofIntuition Medicine (Academy) located inNorthern California. The author workedwith two Master of Intuition Medicine(MIM) vocational program students. Onewas an alumna of the 1993 MIM programand a professor in the computer arts collegeof a German university. The other was anowner of a computer consulting companyand a student in the 2000 MIM program.Part of the MIM program provides eachstudent with an alumnus mentor who assistsin the coursework, and also gives weeklyenergy-systems healings. The student had many areas of intuitiveinterest that matched we)) with the alumna'sexpertise. Given that they both spent agood deal of time at their computers and on

the Internet, the author decided to havethem connect at a distance via email asstudent and mentor. The author assumedthat they would communicate via a live chatsystem, forgetting that the time differencebetween Germany and the US would noteasily a]]ow for scheduling of this kind ofcommunication. They began, quite organically, to communicate to each other via textemail as though they were speaking to eachother in the present moment. The studentwould ask for an energy healing withspecific requests regarding energy systemsand then send the email to the mentor. The mentor would receive the messageusually eight hours later-and respond bysending a reply email text message in whichshe had "intentionally encapsulated", anenergy healing.3.4They were amused to discover that thesending and receiving of energy-systemshealings was operating as intended withoutthe need for physical proximity, and indisregard of the time that the email, and itsencapsulated healing energy/information,was sent. When the student read the textmessage with the information describing thehealing action that the mentor had facilitated, she either began to feel the changeswhile she was reading the message, orrealized that she had already received thepertinent energylinformation prior toreading the email message. Communicationand exchange of information and energy wasoccurring as a nonlocal occurrence, andbeing transmitted via text email messages, consistently with the same reception resultsfor five months. The author theorizes thatthere is a force of "space-conditioning"

intention influencing space and physicalreality-that exists within the Internet; andthat the Internet may be a newly emergingglobal device. The choice of this term wasadapted from the imprinting of devices inthe research work of William Til1er. Thisspace-conditioning process is observed as atest of a possible emerging ecosystem beingcreated within the World Wide Web.

RESEARCH DESIGNHYPOTHESISHealing Energy Can Be Encapsulated IntoAn Email Text Message And TransmittedVia The Internet To An Intended Recipient. This research investigates the efficacy ofnon-local, no-time, no-space distanceeducation programs that utilize intentionality and the Internet. It also identifiesfertile ground in the fields of internet-baseddistance education and energy-basedmedicine that is worthy of futureexploration.HYPOTHETICAL AsSUMPTIONSThe three key assumptions for this study are:1. That healing energy can be isolated andidentified; 2. That healing energy can holdintention; and 3. That healing energy canbe detected.~ E A R C H PROTOCOLThis study was designed to test the detectionof the presence or absence of healing energywithin an email message. CD-ROMs werechosen as the device for holding the healingenergy intentions; three healing energies

were separately intention-imprinted ontothree CD-ROMs. A fourth CD-ROM with"no healing energy" was used as a control.AlJ four CD-ROMs contained the sameinstructional email text messages.Three different healing energies were chosenfor this study-Buddha/Christ Energy,Supreme Being Energy, and KundaliniEnergy. The eighty-eight intuitives used inthis study were trained to identifY and usethese energies in their healing practice. Eachintuitive was instructed to detect thepresence or absence of one of these threeenergies within the email; and then toimmediately fill out a qualitative questionnaire and email reply back to the sender. The questionnaires were remotely collectedby a statistician who was located in Oregon.

    METHODS

T his research was a randomized, singleblind study. There were four formalemail messages sent to 88 test subjects.Professionally trained intuitives were used asthe test subject "measurement instruments"for this research. One professional intuitive (pn, who is thegraduate program instructor at the Academy,intention-imprinted a healing energy onto aCD-ROM. A computer program randomlytransmitted the intention-imprinted emailto the test subjects. The PI performed the procedure at theInstitute of Noetic Sciences laboratory

isolated within a double steel-walled, e1ectro-magneticaJIy and acoustically shieldedchamber in order to minimize ambientresonance, kinetic energy, and other distractions.6 This chamber is most often used forelectromagnetic field testing and for psiexperIments. After entering the chamber, the PI spent oneto two hours in meditation; during that timehe separately held each of the three CDROMs in his hands and intentionallydirected a specific healing energy through hishands directly onto the CD-ROM.After intention-imprinting each CD-ROMwith a healing energy the PI placed it in thecomputer which sent it to the target groupusing a random email sending program. This process was repeated each week for fourconsecutive weeks. The email sending sequence was spaced oneweek apart and on different days of theweek. Each test subject received one of thethree sample energies and one "no energy"email. The sending sequencing of thesubjects' emails and the order of the fourem ails was randomized using a simplerandom number table.

The subjects were randomized in groups offour, and each week each group was rerandomized. The PI did not know whowas receiving the emails, other than theywere MIM alumni. The CD-ROMs were handled only by theprofessional intuitive; they were stored in the

chamber, triple wrapped in aluminum foil, stored in separate tin cans which were placedin a covered cardboard box.STATISTICAL METHODSThe statistical methods used includedcon fidence interval esti mates of thebinomial proportions for the respectiveHits, Success Rate, and Accuracy estimates.Other methods used were an "R x C"conti ngency table analysis of successfulresponses versus skills used, and a simple barchart of the skills used by the test subjects.

STUDY POPULATIONThe MIM alumni email group list receivedan invitation to participate in this research.AJI alumni were predetermined by theresearcher as qualified test subjects based onthe author's training experience with thesubjects and the observation of their performance as mentors or teachers within theAcademy programs. A total of 88 alumniwho had the required time to participate astest subjects in the fuB four-week studyvolunteered in the full study. There were18 men and 70 women from 30 to 60 yearsold. The test subjects were all trained as professional intuitive healers/counselors at theAcademy with a minimum of 1000 hoursof classroom instruction over a period ofthree years. Based on faculty assessment, intuitives who had mastered the ability tooperate in meditative states as a "calibratedhuman measurement instrument" wereaccepted as test subjects. The calibrationtraining method involves students trainingfor hundreds of classroom hours in groups

Intuitives are taught a specific protocol foraccessing, amplifYing, directing, andutilizing these energies for purposes of: (1)healing body/mind/spirit of self andothers; (2) sourcing information(internally and externally); (3) creatingenergetically grounded spaces (internallyand externally); and (4) evolving theirmind/body/spiri t.

Participants in this study, both the oneprofessional intuitive and the 88 subjects, were taught the following methods ofintuitive perception: clairaudience, clairsentience, clairvoyance, knowing, precognition, psychometry, and telepathy.

RESULTSA otal of 248 responses were receivedduring all four weeks of the study.Figure 1 is a plot of the Hits percentage, the Total Success percentage, and theRespective Success percen tage for each ofthe four groups. For purposes of this study,"success" is defined as both the correctdetection and identification of the encapsulated healing energy. Thus, the term"success" is bound to treatment groups (A,B and C) that included an encapsulatedhealing energy.

Relative to the 25 percent chance of success, the Total Success Rate percentage estimateof 31.9% is significant (P < 0.02]; 12 = 185).Therefore this data supports the researchhypothesis that "Healing energy can beencapsulated intentionally into an email textmessage and transmitted via the Internet toan intended recipient."The "Total Success Rate" is calculated usingthe responses only from groups A, Band C(total of 185). The "No Energy" group(Group D) was completely void of anyhealing energy. Since there was no healingenergy present to "identifY" in this group, the percentage of correct responses is labeled"Accuracy Rate" to distinguish it from"Success Rate." The "No Energy" groupwas included in the study largely to assessif the test subjects could detect both thepresence and the absence of healing energywith similar accuracy. This Group D isincluded in the study as a check andbalance: if the test subject were to report adetection of healing energy (when none hadbeen sent) then it diminishes theircredibility as an accurate measurementinstrument. 19The term "hits" in this study represents thepercentage of ALL total correct responses. Therefore, "hits" does include all fourgroups (A, B, C and D) and was calculatedusing all 248 received responses. The analysis of the test subject responsesyielded seven resul ts:1. Total Success Rate is 31.9% (P 0.021)by calculation of a binomial proportion.

The Total Success Rate is calculated USIngthe responses only from treatment groupsA, Band C (rotal of ] 85).2. The Hits Rate is 31.9% (P = 0.009)by calculation of a binomial proportion. (Itwas simple coincidence that the twopercentages came out the same).3. Healing Energy #1 (Supreme Being)Success Rate is 37.3% (P = 0.025) bycalculation of a binomial proportion.4. Healing Energy #2 (Buddha/Christ)Success Rate is 35.40/0 (P = 0.040) bycalculation of a binomial proportion.5. Healing Energy #3 (Kundalini) SuccessRate is (23.00/0) by calculation of a binomialproportion. The success rate with Healing Energy #3(23.00/0) is significantly less than with theHealing Energy #1 (P 0.044), and theHealing Energy #2 (P = 0.063), suggestingthat this healing energy was more difficultto encapsulate or transmit with an email,and/or detect by the test subjects.6. The No Energy Group accuracy rate of31.7% (P 0.] 38) by calculation of abinomial proportion.7. Intuitive Skills. After each of the tests, the subjects filled out, and were instructedto immediately email reply back, a qualita-tive self-reporting questionnaire andindicated from a list of seven intuitive skillswhich one{s) they used to detect thepresence or absence of healing energy within

the email. The seven intuitive skills listedwere: clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, telepathy, precognition, psychometry, and knowing.

The predominant intuitive skill used to detectand identifY encapsulated healing energy wasknowing, used either by itself or in combination with other skills. After knowing, thepredominant slcills used were clairsentience, psychometry, and clairvoyance.REpORT OF INTUITIVE SKILLS TESTEDOf the 248 total responses received from thetest subjects, ]90 included reports of whichintuitive skills were used. In 64 percent ofthose responses (121 out of 190) thesubjects reported using multiple (two ormore) intuitive skills to detect and identifYthe healing energy. Only one skill was

reported being used in the remaInIng 36percent (69 out of 190) of the responses.Only nine test subjects (10 percent of the88 total participants) reported using theexact same skill or combination of skillsduring all weeks of the study in which theyparticipated. Most test subjects useddifferent skills or combinations of skillseach week, although the differences wereusual1y slight. Two of the listed skills, clairaudience and telepathy, were never usedsingly by any of the test subjects. If thesetwo skills were used, it was always incombination with other skills. The otherfive skiJIs were used both singly and incombination with other skills. Following inFigure 2 is a bar chart of the skills andcombination of skills reported used by thetest subjects. constant energy archival medium-workingwith a postulate that time is nonlinear andnon]ocal the subjects may have the skill toaccess information outside of linear time. 21The Internet may participate in this phenomenon in ways that might be explained withinthe Zero Point Field, Akashik Records or theCollective Unconscious theories.22 ,23,244. Addressing a replication consideration:This project states that the intention was touse finely tuned human measurementinstruments-the intuitives trained in thesame protocols as the sender. The study hasconfirmed the hypothesis to a limited degreeand only for the Intuition Medicine trainedintuitive subjects. However, this would notlimit the replication of the research, as anothergroup of energy practitioners, who were, forexample, trained in Reiki or Johrei, could alsofollow the same protocols.CONCLUSIONThe Conscious Internet: It is too early inthis research to conclude that the Internet isa transmitter of "Intentional Intuition."Speculation is that the Internet is a viable"space-conditioning" holder of intentionalenergy as well as a test of an "emergingecosystem." Imaging the World Wide Weband Internet as an evolving ecological systemthat captures and carries human thought maysuggest that intentional intuition is a type ofcommunication linkage system that may beconsciously utilized within the matrix of thedigital reality of the Internet. 25

Kundalini Energy:In the Intuition Medicine system Kundalini energyis approached from a western body/mind model. The author was a founding member of the USAKundalini Research Network and has studiedKundalini energy with thousands of people overthree decades. Through this study a commonalityof Kundalini energy has been obsenred-as broadranging colors carrying a metallic sheen.Consistent with most references to Kundalini, themeridian pathway which this energy follows isobserved as upward through the spinal channelfrom 1st to 7th chakra.r. A crosscultural survey reveals th;t this process is essentiallysimilar in a wide variety of spiritual traditions."L. Sanella, Kundalini: Psychosis or Tramcendence?,(Author, San Francisco, C=A,1976), p. 64.Carl Jung has written a number of volumes on hissymbolic and archetypal perspective of Kundalini."\XThen you succeed in awakening the Kundalini,so that it starts to move out of it s merepotentiality, you necessarily start a world which istotally different from our world. It is a world ofeternity."CG. Jung, The Kundalini yoga: Notes 011 the lecturegitlen by Prof DI: J W Hauer u.lith psychologicalcommentt11J' by Dr. CG. jung. (Mary Foote, Ed.,CG. Institute, Zurich, 1993).Isaac Bentov's western model of Kundalini hasinfluenced scholars, mystics, physicians andscientists in their understanding of this energy."My model also suggests that the spontaneouscases of Kundalini may be attributed to, amongother things, to periodic exposure to certainmechanical or acoustical vibrations, which willcause a sequence of symptoms to arise. This hasbeen shown by a biofeedback technique utilizinga pulsating magnetic field around the head. Whenpeople are exposed to frequencies of about 4 or 7Hz .. . these vibrations may be able to trigger aspontaneous physio-kundalini sequence in suscep

    21. Imagine the World Wide Web as an omnipresentarchival system. This cyberspace digital realitysymbolically an d literally represents collectiveinformation of human existence. This web-net isin a continual state of data collection. All theinformation which is fed to this web-net is storedin a cyberspace archival domain. In the spiritualtradition of Theosophy, expressed by MadameRlatvasky, is found an information collectionprocess called the akashic records-a psychicarchival system which is located on the astraldomain (considered to be a manifestation of themental plane). In this metaphor the astral plane isanalogous to Internet cyberspace. In the philosophy of this tradition the akashic records are inconstant state of information accumulation storingall of human thought, past, present and future, thus its un-time bound character.
