In September, we are hosting a panel o electedoicials rom State and Local government, Stateo Indiana sta, ormer interns, and proession-al advocates to speak to students, parents andaculty about the opportunities these and otherlegislative internships can make.
We encourage you to tell a student you knowrom Northeast Indiana and encourage them to

The challenges o selecting the
right suppliers or your needsOne o the greatest challenges in selecting theright suppliers or your company is to know what, exactly, you need rom them.
In order to get a sense o what your suppliersshould be providing, you need to have an approachthat is linked to the priorities o your company.Ten this approach needs to be translated intospecic requirements and criteria or choosingsuppliers and communicated throughout your or-ganization.
Formulating the approach should involve earlyinput rom all levels o your company, especially
those who will be most impacted by the supplier.Tis includes everyone rom management to hour-ly sta.
It is important that management demonstratesits commitment to the supplier selection strategyby being an active participant, but it is equally im-portant that other stakeholders view themselvesas an integral part o the process. When they viewthemselves this way, it will ease adoption and
implementation o these procurement-relatedchanges.
Te risk o poor or unsustainable choices in-creases without a strong supplier selection system.
Another benet o soliciting advice rom outsidethe procurement sta is that you may identiythese poor choices beore they are made.
For example, a manuacturer may see some sav-ings by changing who supplies a particular compo-nent o its product, but these savings may be morethan oset by additional processing time. Some-one with knowledge o the manuacturing process
can identiy this beore a contract is in place.Tis type o planning should not be relegated tothe back burner while other issues take priority.Supplier choice has an immediate and substantialimpact on your costs, and, thereore, your bottomline.
Developing common objectives or supplier se-lection among multiple unctions is challenging, but the costs o not doing this can be much worse.

Most Americans consume too many calories ona daily basis, resulting in over two-thirds o adultsand one-third o children in our country beingoverweight or obese. So how many daily caloriesdoes each person need? While the answer is di-erent or everyone, you must consider a varietyo actors.
Te daily caloric intake to maintain your weightis based on the ollowing: age, current weight andheight, gender and physical activity level. For ex-ample, a 35-year-old woman that is 5 oot, 5 inchestall, weighing 150 pounds with little or no exerciseneeds 1,750 calories a day. Whereas a male withthe same demographics needs 1,900 calories a day.
o determine the number o calories you need, visit www.mayoclinic.com and search calorie
counter. Ten use this inormation to start work-ing to a healthier you. Start with the ollowingplan: Write it down. A ood journal will help you
quickly identiy what and how much you are eat-ing. An easy to use tool can be ound at www.my-tnesspal.com. Review weekly. What do you see? Looking at
your ood journal on a weekly basis will help youidentiy oods that you are consuming too muchor too little o. Make modications. Were not saying you
cant have your avorite ood, but eat less o it andavoid oversized portions. Eat more ruits and veg-etables that are low in calories and packed withimportant nutrients. Drink water instead o highcalorie sugary drinks.
In order to lose one pound you would need toreduce your caloric consumption by 3,500 calo-ries. Losing 1-2 pounds a week is an ideal plan
or weight loss. Tis means cutting out 500-1,000calories a day rom your diet. By keeping track andmaking modications on what you eat, you will beon your way to dropping those unwanted pounds.

I you arent already aware (and I hope you aresince Ive written about it beore in my articles),Graduate Retention has a program called theLive, Learn and Intern program which is undedthrough grants (this year it was generously sup-ported through a grant rom the Wal-Mart Foun-dation), and is geared towards college age youngpeople who are interning in Northeast Indianaduring the summer.
Tis amazing program provides ree events orthese young people in an eort to expose them toall the great things they can do i they choose tolive and work in our region ater they graduate!
What we know about young people is that hav-ing a job opportunity is not enough to promptthem to stay somewhere. Tey want to live and
work in a community that is vibrant and alive withactivity.
Tis is what makes the Live, Learn and Internprogram such an important part o what we herethe Chamber are doing through our Graduate Re-tention Program.
Youve heard me say it beore and Ill say it again:We need these young people to stay here and toaccomplish that, they need to know all the greatthings Northeast Indiana has to oer them.
Last month, I asked my abulous intern Sarah towrite an article about her perceptions o our area.As a student rom Indianapolis, I was ver y inter-ested to know what she thought.
Id like to share with you an email we receivedrom another student who is not rom our area.Alice wrote (regarding the Live, Learn and Internevents);
Tank you or organizing these amazing serieso events! I came to Fort Wayne in January blindrom Michigan, and had no idea where to ventureon the weekends i I did not nd something spe-cial through websites like www.visitortwayne.com. I liked the city, but my impression o the citywas not exceptional other than the drivers morecourteous, cash bars were cheaper, most stores ac-cessible within a 15 minute drive, and extremely
estive in the months rom May to July... but theLLI events gave the perect conditions or internsto participate (ree events designed or interns& FREE MEAL) to enjoy the proud side o FortWayne within a budget. Please know that I havebeen leveraging this program as an absolute ben-et to encourage ellow students in Michigan to
reach out o state and work in (or even to visit)this city.
Comments like this remind me o how critical itis or us to not only have job opportunities avail-able to attract young people, but we also need tohave something to oer them that gives them achance to become engaged in our community, toeel like this could be home to them!
I think all o this is so resh in my mind becausewe just had our nal Live, Learn and Intern eventlast week at Sycamore Hills with our guest speaker,Julia Fiechter rom Lendingahand.net, remindingus how important connections are to success. I be-lieve that our young people have to eel connectedto Northeast Indiana in order or us to draw themand keep them here.
Youve heard me say it beore, but I think it isour responsibility as a city, as a region, and as citi-zens, to provide a welcoming community or theseamazing young people (and I can tell you in all sin-cerity that I truly believe they are amazing). I amimpressed daily by our young people and I thinkthat i we really want them to be our uture, thenwe need to keep them here. I we dont, they be-
come someone elses uture and Northeast Indi-ana will suer rom their loss.
So I guess all Im trying to hit home is that wehave a great community here! We just need toshow it o a little more through programs likeLive, Learn and Intern. Our uture is here, we justneed to convince them to stay!!!
