Ashoka Arab World – Internship Program
Start Empathy Movement
Terms of Reference - Empathy Intern
Background:
Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs—men and women with
system changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social problems. From its regional office in
Cairo, Ashoka Arab World (AAW) creates a competitive, entrepreneurial, and globally integrated
citizen sector and develops the profession of social entrepreneurship. AAW currently works with
75 Ashoka Fellows located in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Arab World Empathy Movement:
Over the last 30 years, Ashoka has to come to realize that becoming an effective changemaker
depends, first and foremost, on mastering empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings
and perspectives of others and to use that understanding to guide one’s actions. Far from being a
nice-to-have, empathy is core to our ability to grasp the many sides of today’s complex problems
and to collaborate with others to solve them. It is the vehicle through which we learn to listen and
communicate; to align interests and solve conflicts; and to forge meaningful relationships, at home,
in our workplaces, and in our communities.
Ashoka is teaming up with a coalition of social entrepreneurs, leading educators, and creative directors to mobilize and support teachers and principals interested in jumpstarting empathy
education in their own classrooms. Together, we aim to build a social activation campaign capable of
reaching a wide array of educators and uniting them behind a common cause, while simultaneously
equipping them with the stories and tools needed to facilitate lasting school improvement. Our
strategy is to change the community conversation while creating a buzz towards the importance of
mastering applied Empathy since childhood, accelerate Empathy entrepreneurs and tip elementary
schools.
