From its regional office in Cairo, Ashoka Arab World (AAW) creates a competitive, entrepreneurial, and globally integrated citizen sector and develops the profession of social entrepreneurship. AAW currently works with 75 Ashoka Fellows located in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Arab World Empathy Movement: Over the last 30 years, Ashoka has to come to realize that becoming an effective changemaker depends, first and foremost, on mastering empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings and perspectives of others and to use that understanding to guide one’s actions. Far from being a nice-to-have, empathy is core to our ability to grasp the many sides of todays complex problems and to collaborate with others to solve them. It is the vehicle through which we learn to listen and communicate; to align interests and solve conflicts; and to forge meaningful relationships, at home, in our workplaces, and in our communities. Ashoka is teaming up with a coalition of social entrepreneurs, leading educators, and creative directors to mobilize and support teachers and principals interested in jumpstarting empathy education in their own classrooms. Together, we aim to build a social activation campaign capable of reaching a wide array of educators and uniting them behind a common cause, while simultaneously equipping them with the stories and tools needed to facilitate lasting school improvement. Our strategy is to change the community conversation while creating a buzz towards the importance of mastering applied Empathy since childhood, accelerate Empathy entrepreneurs and tip elementary schools. Background:

Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs—men and women with

Office hours: 9 am to 5 pm (unless assigned to stay later fulfilling work requirements)

Working days: Sunday through Thursday, with weekends on Friday and Saturday. Work-related

obligations sometimes require weekend attendance.

and Responsibilities Duties

1- Action Research: Under the supervision and management of the Operations Manager, the Empathy Movement intern

will carry out action research steps to see how spreading the Empathy set of skills work in the Arab

World, this may include but not limited to:

Organizing and carrying out teachers, education consultants, schools’ principles, social

workers and prominent educators’ roundtables discussions to figure out how Empathy can

work in the Arab World, how can we tackle it inside the classrooms, and through which

model can schools students’ best receive it. Write reports on the findings of the previously mentioned roundtable discussions.

Carrying out a mapping for potential partner organizations

Carrying out a mapping for potential funding organizations

Carrying out a competitive analysis for the movement

Carrying out a financial analysis for the movement

Carrying out a mapping for potential Empathy advocates - opinion leaders in the community

who can potentially adopt the movement and advocate for it through their relative work fields

Carrying out a mapping for potential media ambassadors

Carrying out a mapping for potential media partners and outlets where we can have Empathy

talks aired or Empathy articles published.

2- Implementation: After completing the action research steps, the Empathy movement intern will play a key role in

designing and implementing the Empathy pilot project in a number of chosen Egyptian elementary

schools. This will include:

Help in designing the final model to be delivered in schools

Identifying changemaker schools and teachers ready to adopt the program

Help in recruiting strategic partner organizations

Follow up with Ashoka fellows who work on accelerating Empathy in Egypt to integrate them

into the pilot project.

3- Media and Marketing: The Empathy movement intern will play an important role in designing the movement’s media and

marketing plan, this may include but not limited to:

Assist in recruiting potential Empathy Movement advocates and media ambassadors while

joining Ashoka staff members in meeting and following up with them and introducing the

movement along with its vision and objectives

Assist in recruiting Empathy movement media partners

Support in designing the movement’s promotional materials (designs, slogans, videos,etc)

Help in managing the Empathy movement online social media presence, by generating new

content or compiling and disseminating relevant existing content on the web

AAW Internship Terms: Internships are unpaid.

Work related expenses are covered.

We are based in Manial, Cairo, Egypt.

Our working week is Sunday through Thursday from 9 AM - 5 PM.

We accept interns on a rolling basis throughout the year.

We offer internships for a minimum duration of 4 weeks, full time; other internships could be

long term in the summer, spring and fall.

Internships are available across AAW programs.

Interns are requested to bring their own laptop.

Internship Benefits:

Interns are offered a first class immersion in the Social Entrepreneurship space in Egypt, being

exposed and connected to the world’s leading social innovators and getting involved with a team fully

committed to positive social changemaking.

Interns are treated like staff members and have similar responsibilities. Interns have the opportunity

to attend all our meetings, conferences, events and share by their insights, ideas and efforts in all our

office operations, procedures and programs.

Qualifications:

Education

B.A. in a relevant field, preferably Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, Mass

communications, Development studies, Education, Economics or Political Science.

Experience and Requirements

1 year of relevant experience is preferred

Familiarity with research methods and analytical tools

Excellent writing and analytical skills

Proficient in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Power point, etc.

Familiarity with the Arab World

Applicant must be a team player with a high level of commitment who is able to manage multiple

high-priority tasks at once

Person must have strong initiative, independence, creativity and sound judgment. They must be

service-oriented and flexible, with excellent communication and organizational skills

Language

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency in spoken and written Arabic a plus
