Preface

ii

PrefaceThe Emergency Cardiovascular Care Course Card Reference Guide is a quality control tool to be used

with American Heart Association (AHA) course cards. It is not a policy document. The Course Card

Reference Guide provides a means to ensure that AHA course completion cards are valid.

AHA Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) course cards are described throughout this Guide. This

Guide includes samples of available cards for each discipline. Quality Control Checkpoints aid the user by

providing the date the card was introduced, the date the card was withdrawn from use, and how long the

card is recognized.

Course cards are available only to authorized Training Centers (TCs) with a confidential security code

issued by AHA National Center ECC Programs. Each student who successfully completes an AHA ECC cre-

dentialed course must be issued the appropriate course card, which bears an AHA logo. The TC conducting

the course is responsible for card issuance and security through its instructors and Training Sites. Each TC

must document how it maintains card security and accountability. Duplicate course cards are managed by

the TC issuing the original card.

For clarification on issues addressed in this Guide or to verify the status of the TC that issued a card,

please contact the ECC Customer Support Center at 1-877-242-4277, option 2.

Page 4: Emergency Cardiovascular Care Course Card Reference Guide

IntroductionThe completion cards issued for the courses use criteria and materials from the 2010 AHA Guidelines for

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and ECC and the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC.

The current cards include

• RQI® Responder (Hands-Only CPR)

• Heartsaver® CPR AED, Heartsaver First Aid, Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED, Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED, Heartsaver for K-12 Schools, and Heartsaver Instructor

• BLS Provider, RQI BLS Healthcare Provider, and BLS Instructor

• ACLS Provider, RQI ALS Healthcare Provider, and ACLS Instructor

• ACLS Experienced Provider and ACLS EP Instructor

• PALS Provider, RQI PALS Healthcare Provider, and PALS Instructor

• PEARS® Provider and PEARS Instructor

eCardsThe eCards are an electronic equivalent to the printed AHA course completion cards. eCards are valid course

completion cards and can be presented to employers as proof of successful completion of an AHA course.

Like the printed cards, eCards expire 2 years after the issue date.

Students may print eCards in a certificate-size or wallet-size format, as shown below, or may present them

as an image on a mobile device. We encourage all employers and licensing entities to validate eCards as

described below.

eCard Layout

• General: All information on the eCard is digitally populated from the information entered by the Training Center Coordinator (TCC) or Instructor.

• Branding: eCards feature the official AHA logo.

• Copyright: All cards have a copyright notice.

• Dates: The issue date appears as the 2-digit month and day and 4-digit year. The recommended renewal date appears as the 2-digit month and 4-digit year, 2 years from the issue date.

• eCard code: The eCard code is printed on the card. The format of the code is the last 2 digits of the year the eCard was issued, followed by a 3-digit course code and a 7-digit random number. This code may be used by students or employers to access and verify eCards at www.heart.org/cpr/mycards.

• Modules: For Heartsaver cards, the optional modules completed are listed.

• QR code: eCards feature a QR code, which can be scanned with a mobile device to view the eCard.

• Verification: eCards include the website address where students and employers can view or verify eCards.

Security and Validation

eCards are more secure than printed cards. A 3-point verification by the TCC, instructor, and student is required

to issue and claim eCards. eCard information is populated electronically by the TCC or instructor and can only

be altered by the TCC.

Using the eCards Code, employers can easily verify eCards at www.heart.org/cpr/mycards to prove issuance

by a valid TC and instructor aligned with that TC.

Accessing eCard Profiles

Students who are issued eCards have the benefit of self-service and can access their eCard Profile any time at www.heart.org/cpr/mycards.

To log into the eCard Profile, the student simply enters his or her First Name, Last Name, and Email Address (must be the email address the student used to claim the eCard). Or the student can log in by entering the eCard Code found on the eCard. The student will be prompted to enter the security answer created when he or she initially claimed the eCard.

See Lost your AHA Completion Card? for information on replacing an eCard.

Cards

Page 6: Emergency Cardiovascular Care Course Card Reference Guide

Printed CardsThe AHA requires that course cards have information that is complete and legible. It is required that all cards

be stamped, typed, or computer printed to reduce the risk of cards being altered. It is permissible for only the

front of the card to be legibly handwritten (student name, issue date, and recommended renewal date). The

handwritten information must be printed in blue or black ink. All information on the back of the card must be

stamped, typed, or computer printed. The content of AHA course cards cannot be altered in any way.

Front of Card

• The course name is preprinted on the card.

• Indicate the student’s name (eg, first name, middle initial, and last name).

• Heartsaver course completion cards also feature an area on the front of the card listing optional modules for the course. AHA Instructors are to strike through the optional modules not completed.

• Indicate the issue date as a 2-digit month and day, and 4-digit year (4/15/2017). For cards issued by International Training Centers using CPRverify, the date will follow the standard international format of 2-digit day, abbreviated month, and 4-digit year (15 Apr 2017).

• Indicate the recommended renewal/expiration date, 2 years from the issue date (2-digit month and 4-digit year; 04/2019). For cards issued by International Training Centers using CPRverify, the date will show the month, spelled out, and the 4-digit year (April 2019). The card is valid through the end of the month.

Back of Card

All of the following items are required unless otherwise noted:

• Indicate the name of the TC.

• Indicate the TC’s AHA identification number.

• Indicate the TC’s address and contact information.

• Indicate the location of the course. Provide a general description of where the course was conducted. Note that the Heartsaver for K-12 Schools card uses “School Name” instead of “Course Location.”

• Indicate the Instructor ID number.

• All information on the back of the card must be stamped, typed, or computer printed. It cannot be handwritten.

• On provider cards, indicate the Director’s/Instructor’s AHA Instructor Network identification number.

• On instructor cards, indicate the receiving instructor’s AHA Instructor Network identification number. The instructor identification number should be for the person whose name is on the front of the card.

• The person who has completed the course must sign his or her name in black or blue ink. A missing signature does not invalidate the card.

Course Card Tip Sheets and Templates

Only TCCs can access course card tip sheets and templates on the AHA Instructor Network website at www.ahainstructornetwork.org. To use the card templates, you will need Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded, for free, from Adobe’s website at get.adobe.com/reader/.

Each package of course cards comes with a tip sheet, and printed on the back is a practice sheet. Make extra copies of the practice sheet to test the alignment of the template before printing on the course cards.

Security Features

• Card layout: Each sheet of cards is formatted for printing both sides at the same time. The completed card can be peeled from the sheet and folded to form a 33∕8 × 21∕8-inch card.

• Color designation: Each discipline is designated by a color stripe at the top edge of both sides. Heartsaver and BLS are blue, ACLS and ACLS EP are red, and PALS and PEARS are purple.

• Copyright: All cards have a copyright notice.

• Highlighted personalization: The cards have highlighted areas for the name, issue date, and renewal date. Tampering with these areas will alter the appearance of the card.

• Microprint: All cards use security microprinting for the information lines. For example, the microprint on the BLS Instructor card is “BLSINSTRUCTORBLSINSTRUCTOR” (Figure 1).

• Viewing microprint: The microprint can be viewed with a loupe or magnifying glass, such as that in Figure 2.

Duplication/Replacement of Lost Cards

It is the responsibility of the TC to issue a duplicate card if a card is lost, is mutilated, or otherwise becomes unus-able. All requests for duplicate or replacement cards must be submitted directly to the TCC who issued the original card. The Course Director or Lead Instructor may advise the student to contact the TC that issued the original card, or the instructor may do so. The TC may set a fee for reissuing a card.

See Lost your AHA Completion Card? for information on replacing a card.

RQI

RQI® eCredentials (Resuscitation Quality Improvement®)

RQI eCredentials are issued as part of the AHA’s RQI 2020 Program. RQI eCredentials have a unique design that

represents the gold standard of quality for learners who have verified competence through active and ongoing

participation in RQI 2020.

The AHA’s Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Program delivers quarterly CPR skill and resuscitation learn-

ing activities to support mastery of high-quality CPR skills through the use of feedback-driven, deliberate practice.

Since RQI is recognized by the AHA as the gold standard, learners who possess a valid RQI eCredential may

claim a traditional two-year AHA eCard for the curriculum that they are verified in. Example: A learner with a valid

RQI BLS Healthcare Provider eCredential may request and be provided a 2-year AHA BLS Provider eCard

(fee applies).

The RQI Responder Program has been developed to assist in the continuous improvement of Hands-Only CPR

skills provided by ancillary and support staff at RQI hospitals. This program is designed to prepare hospital em-

ployees not directly involved in patient care to respond effectively and efficiently to a cardiac arrest. The program

combines cognitive learning tools and CPR manikin skills practice in a time-efficient, high-impact course.

RQI eCredential Layout

• General: RQI eCredentials are issued as part of RQI 2020 for RQI Responder, RQI BLS, RQI ALS, and RQI

PALS. RQI eCredentials can be easily recognized by the “American Heart Association RQI Verified” gold seal

in the top left corner.

• Dates: The “valid until” date and the “Date of last activity” on the RQI eCredential will update each calendar

quarter when a learner completes assigned activities.

• Verification: RQI eCredentials can be verified at www.heart.org/RQIVerify.

International eCardsThe AHA has a large and growing training network outside the United States. In some locations, the AHA has translated or cobranded course cards. These cards are equivalent to standard AHA course cards; all course objectives and mate-rials remain the same worldwide. All translated eCards are adapted from the English international course eCards. AHA International Training Centers continue to have the option of issuing either eCards or printed cards.

Accessing eCard Profiles

Students who are issued eCards have the benefit of self-service and can access their eCard Profile any time at www.CPRverify.org.

If you have not created your profile, select “New to CPRverify? Sign up.” and fill out the form. After you sign up, log in to your profile, select “Add Course,” and enter your Verification Code Number to add to your profile. Once you provide course feedback, your eCard will be accessible under your “My Courses and Feedback” tab.

For information on replacing international cards, contact [email protected].

Military Training Network (United States Only)

Since 1984, the AHA has recognized the Military Training Network (MTN) for Resuscitative Medicine Programs as equivalent to an AHA ECC region and national TC.

The MTN coordinates resuscitative medicine programs for the uniformed services. The Department of Defense Health Council at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences established these programs for the uniformed services.

For more information, go to www.usuhs.mil/mtn/.

MTN Provider Cards

• MTN provider cards for AHA courses are equivalent to the corresponding AHA provider cards (the MTN uses the AHA curricula).

• These cards are recognized within the Department of Defense.

• These cards may not bear the AHA logo.

• MTN provider cards should be recognized by AHA TCs and Training Sites (TSs) when renewing provider status of Department of Defense personnel.

• The MTN may issue AHA provider cards.

• A person with a current MTN provider card may attend a discipline-specific AHA renewal or update course.

MTN Instructor Cards• The MTN issues AHA Instructor cards.

• MTN Instructors who wish to teach outside the MTN must align with a civilian TC and meet its affiliation require-ments. These instructors will have dual instructor status and alignment and will issue cards appropriate to their audiences.

• MTN Instructors must meet all TC and MTN training requirements to maintain their status. All courses may count toward teaching requirements in both systems. It is the instructor’s responsibility to ensure that the MTN site and the TC are provided with course rosters.

MTN Training Site Faculty Cards• The MTN appoints TS Faculty rather than TC Faculty or Regional Faculty.

• MTN TS Faculty appointments are not recognized outside the MTN and are not transferable to civilian TCs. An MTN TS Faculty member who aligns with a civilian TC will need to work with the new TC to establish TC Faculty status.
