Making Present From “Learning to Love the Mass”

We pray in the Canon that God “command that these gifts be borne by the hands of Your holy Angel to Your altar on high in the sight of

Your divine majesty, so that all of us who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy Body and Blood of Your Son may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing.” This may seem strange to us that live in Time, but it only make senses from God’s perspective. God sees all of Time at once because He is eternal (To get the same idea, imagine that you are looking at a set of security monitors, except that God’s show every single location in Heaven and creation at every single moment in Time):

The Mass “makes present” the reality of Christ’s offering Himself. It is the same action, not a repeat and not a show. Cardinal Ratzinger

explains this in his chapter of the Spirit of the Liturgy on the relationship between the liturgy and time: The Crucifixion of Christ, his death on the Cross, and, in another way, the act of his Resurrection from the grave, which be-stows incorruptibility on the corruptible, are historical events that happen just once and as such belong to the past. The word semel (ephapax), “once for all”, which the epistle to the Hebrews emphasizes so vigorously in contrast to the multitude of repeated sacrifices in the Old Covenant, is strictly applicable to them.[…] However, the exterior act of being crucified is accom-panied by an interior act of self-giving […] This act of giving is in no way just a spiritual occurrence. It is a spiritual act that takes up the bodily into itself, that embraces the whole man […] The real interior act, though it does not exist without the exterior, transcends time, but since it comes from time, time can again and again be brought into it (The Spirit of the Liturgy, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, pp. 55-56).

The timelessness of the act of Christ continually offering Himself to the Father is what makes it possible to make that eternal act present at every Mass. In the Mass, Christ, acting through the priest, takes us through the veil of Time, making the eternal present. (For those who in-clined to think in scientific terms, the Mass is a wormhole, which connects Calvary at the moment of Christ’s death to every point in space and time at which the Holy Mass is offered.) Christ is the One Who offers the sacrifice, doing so eternally before the throne of His Father in Heaven. The Mass allows us to participate sacramentally in this sacrifice in a particular time and place. Hence, this is not merely a memory as we use the word, that is, recalling facts and events.

One may ask: why is it necessary that this happen? Why is it not sufficient for Christ’s Sacrifice to have happened in the past? The an-swer to this has been made clear recently by Pope Pius XII in his beautiful encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy, Mediator Dei:

“For the merits of this sacrifice, since they are altogether boundless and immeasurable, know no limits; for they are meant for all men of every time and place.” (n. 76, emphasis added) “This purchase [ransoming of the souls], however, does not immediately have its full effect; since Christ, after re-deeming the world at the lavish cost of His own blood, still must come into complete possession of the souls of men. Wherefore, that the redemption and salvation of each person and of future generations unto the end of time may be effectively accomplished, and be acceptable to God, it is necessary that men should individually come into vital contact with the sacrifice of the cross, so that the merits, which flow from it, should be imparted to them. In a certain sense it can be said that on Calvary Christ built a font of purification and salvation which He filled with the blood He shed; but if men do not bathe in it and there wash away the stains of their iniquities, they can never be purified and saved.” (n. 77, emphasis added) “The august sacrifice of the altar is, as it were, the supreme instrument whereby the merits won by the divine Re-deemer upon the cross are distributed to the faithful […] Its daily immolation reminds us that there is no salvation except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ [Cf. Gal. 6: 14] and that God Himself wishes that there should be a con-tinuation of this sacrifice “from the rising of the sun till the going down thereof,” [Mal 1: 11] so that there may be no cessation of the hymn of praise and thanksgiving which man owes to God, seeing that he required His help con-tinually and has need of the blood of the Redeemer to remit sin which challenges God’s justice.” (n. 79, emphasis added)

In other words, Christ died for our sins, once for all, but in order for that sacrifice to be effective, we must individually receive the effects of that sacrifice. This happens through our Baptism (first) and then repeatedly through our participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receiving our Lord in Holy Communion.

Hacer Presente De "Aprender a amar la Misa"

Oramos en el Canon para que Dios manda “que esta ofrenda sea llevada a tu presencia, hasta el altar del cielo, por manos tu ángel, para que cuantos recibimos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de tu Hijo, al participar aquí de este altar, Se endereza y se signa diciendo: seamos colmados de gracia y bendición.”. Esto puede parecer extraño para nosotros que vivimos en el tiempo, pero solo tiene sentido desde la perspectiva de Dios. Dios ve todo el tiempo a la vez porque es eterno: La misa "hace presente" la realidad de la ofrenda de Cristo mismo. Es la misma acción, no una repetición y no un espectáculo. El Cardenal Ratzinger explica esto en su capítulo del Espíritu de la Liturgia sobre la relación entre la liturgia y el tiempo:

La crucifixión de Cristo, su muerte en la cruz y, de otra manera, el acto de su resurrección de la tumba, que otorga incorruptibilidad a lo corruptible, son eventos históricos que ocurren solo una vez y, como tales, pertenecen al pasado. La palabra semel (ephapax), "de una vez por todas", que la epístola a los hebreos enfatiza tan vigorosamente en contraste con la multitud de sacrificios repetidos en el Anti-guo Pacto, es estrictamente aplicable a ellos. La atemporalidad del acto de Cristo ofreciéndose continuamente al Padre es lo que hace posible que ese acto eterno esté presente en cada Misa. En la Misa, Cristo, actuando a través del sacerdote, nos lleva a través del velo del Tiempo, haciendo lo eterno presente. Cristo es quien ofrece el sacrificio, haciéndolo eternamente ante el trono de su Padre en el cielo. La misa nos permite participar sacramentalmente en este sacrificio en un momento y lugar particulares. Por lo tanto, esto no es simplemente un recuerdo cuando usamos la palabra, es decir, recordar hechos y eventos.

Uno puede preguntarse: ¿por qué es necesario que esto suceda? ¿Por qué no es suficiente que el sacrificio de Cristo haya sucedido en el pasado? La respuesta a esto ha sido aclarada recientemente por el Papa Pío XII en su hermosa encíclica sobre la Sagrada Liturgia, Mediador Dei:

“En efecto, los méritos infinitos e inmensos de este sacrificio no tienen límites, y se extienden a todos los hombres en cualquier lugar y tiempo” (n. 95) “Sin embargo, este rescate no obtuvo inmediatamente su efecto pleno; es menester que Cristo, después de haber rescatado al mundo con el copiosísimo precio de sí mismo, entre en la posesión real y efectiva de las almas. De aquí que, para que se lleve a cabo y sea grata a Dios la redención y salvación de todos los individuos y de las generaciones venideras hasta el fin de los siglos, es de necesidad absoluta que tomen todos contacto vital con el sacrificio de la cruz, y así, los méritos que de él se derivan les serán transmitidos y aplicados. Se puede decir que Cristo ha construido en el Calvario una piscina de purificación y de salvación que llenó con su sangre, por El vertida; pe-ro, si los hombres no se bañan en sus aguas y no lavan en ellas las manchas de su iniquidad, no serán ciertamente purificados y salva-dos.” (n. 96) “El augusto sacramento del altar es un insigne instrumento para distribuir a los creyentes los méritos que se derivan de la cruz del divino Redentor. «Cuantas veces se celebra la memoria de este sacrificio, renuévase la obra de nuestra redención». Y esto, lejos de disminuir la dignidad del sacrificio cruento, hace resaltar, como afirma el concilio de Trento[77], su grandeza y proclama su necesidad. Al ser renova-do cada día, nos advierte que no hay salvación fuera de la cruz de nuestro Señor Jesucristo; que Dios quiere la continuación de este sacri-ficio «desde levante a poniente», para que no cese jamás el himno de glorificación y de acción de gracias que los hombres deben al Cria-dor, puesto que tienen necesidad de su continua ayuda y de la sangre del Redentor para borrar los pecados que ofenden a su justi-cia.” (n. 98)

En otras palabras, Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, de una vez por todas, pero para que ese sacrificio sea efectivo, debemos recibir individualmente los efectos de ese sacrificio. Esto sucede a través de nuestro Bautismo (primero) y luego repetidamente a través de nuestra participación en el Santo Sacrificio de la Misa y de recibir a nuestro Señor en la Sagrada Comunión.
