I always welcome the chance to listento people on the front line.

As the head of Services and Support for North America, I’m continually getting written reports and statistical data about the performance and maintenance of customer airplanes, the effi ciency of our warehouses, the quality of training and the needs of my team. All of those are critical to keeping the Embraer fl eet operating reliably, day in and day out.

But it’s the face-to-face feedback from customers and their operational personnel that is the most valuable. Our annual EOC conference provides an ideal forum to listen to the issues fi rsthand and to understand how we can make improvements.

This year’s event in Marco Island was organized to bring together both ERJ and E-Jet operators from around the world for fi ve days in a single location. The agenda allowed for the free exchange of experiences that were not limited to the North American environment. That global perspective, in turn, helps us propose solutions that, while targeted to a few, may, in fact, benefi t everyone.

Our global fl eet and customer portfolio may be growing but so, too, is the importance we put on listening to the issues that our customers face every day. After all, when they succeed, we succeed.

The effect of volcanic ash on aircraft was one of the featured topics on the discussion agenda for more than 500 delegates

who attended Embraer’s annual Operator’s Conference. The event convened representatives from airlines and suppliers at Marco Island,

Florida, for two consecutive conferences. E-Jet operators met from October 16th-19th and a separate program focused on issues for ERJ

145 operators from October 19th-21st.

In addition to formal sessions for all participants, there were afternoon workshops to share experiences on materials, flight operations, interiors,

avionics, flight controls, propulsion, landing gear, hydraulics, MMEL, spares, and structures. Delegates had opportunities to schedule separate meetings

with representatives from each of the seventeen industry sponsors.

Embraer previously held two conferences, one in Europe and one in North America. Combining the venues into a single event not only gives more

opportunities to exchange information, it also exposes airlines to a wider range of operating situations. Carriers in remote parts of the world can learn of procedures

that high-utilization American and European customers have adopted, for example, and apply them to their local organizations.

As always, a key focus of the EOC is the continual drive to reduce maintenance costs. Representatives from Embraer’s main supply chain, including Rolls-Royce, GE, Honeywell, Goodrich,

Parker, C&D Zodiac and Liebherr were on hand to listen to customer feedback.

The week was not all work. The E-Jets and ERJ 145 conferences each offered a program of pre-event and evening leisure

activities that showcased the best of the west coast of Florida. At the end

of each program, awards were given to those who

had the best round of golf and caught the

biggest fish.

t’s arguably the most iconic shuttle service in commercial aviation and it has seen its share of carriers all trying to carve a piece of its lucrative pie. Since Eastern Airlines started flying the New York(LGA)-Boston(BOS)-Washington(LGA) triangle in 1961, the corridor has attracted a host of airlines in their quest for high-fare paying business travelers who value time, reliability and convenience above all else. While Pan Am, New York Air and the Trump Shuttle have long since disappeared from the three routes, Delta and US Airways have demonstrated staying power despite the volatility of the industry and competition from Amtrak’s Acela.

In its heyday, the workhorses of the tri-city shuttle network were fleets of dedicated B727s and DC9s that turned quickly to be ready for the next on-the-hour departure. The core elements of the LGA-BOS-DCA shuttle philosophy have not changed. Business travelers still demand hourly schedules and on-time departures. But the single-class, cattle car standby-only experience has given way to confirmed reservations, premium class seating, electronic ticketing and new, smaller airplanes.

The B727s and DC9s have been replaced with A319s & A320s and, it may surprise you, Embraer E-Jets. Sixty times every business day, like clockwork, Delta Shuttle E175s fly between LGA and DCA and US Airways Shuttle E190s operate between LGA and BOS. E-Jets represent half the departures on these routes.

Each airline offers First Class seating in a two-by-one arrangement on its Shuttle aircraft – 12 seats on Delta’s E175 and 11 on US Airways’ E190. The absence of a middle seat in the main cabin is a welcome E-Jet feature by passengers who appreciate the extra space and by airlines that can expedite boarding and deplaning. Fast turn time is essential to keeping shuttle operations on schedule and E-Jets are designed to be turned in as little as 15 minutes.

E-Jets are also present on the third side of the commuter triangle. JetBlue Airways schedules 32 flights exclusively with the E190 every weekday between BOS and Washington National, Dulles and Baltimore airports.

E-Jets are branching out beyond the hour-long sector domain of traditional shuttle operations. Delta Connection has been steadily building frequencies between LGA and Chicago O’Hare with 22 flights every business day. The two hour and fifteen minute flights depart at hourly intervals with the exception of mid-morning and mid-day slots. Embraer E-jets have proven themselves to be capable and economical aircraft in these high frequency shuttle markets, providing an excellent customer experience, quick turn and reliable airline operation.

Luiz Chiessi, Vice President of Marketing for Embraer Commercial Aviation, was one of the key speakers at Forecast Summit 2011, The Boyd Group’s annual conference in which leaders gather to discuss how trends and issues impact the future of the airline industry. This year’s August event in Albuquerque attracted nearly 500 delegates from 45 airlines, 70 airports and 10 countries.

Mr. Chiessi reviewed Embraer’s twenty-year projections for aircraft demand in the 70 to 120-seat capacity segment. His presentation reinforced the viability of the category as evidenced by the company’s eleven hundredth-order E-Jets milestone.

Embraer reached another E-Jet program milestone in September 2011 with the delivery of the 800th E-jet aircraft. The plane was delivered to China’s CDB Leasing Co. which leased the E190 to China Southern Airlines (Xinjiang), China’s largest carrier and the third largest airline in the world, as measured by passengers flown.

This is China Southern’s third E190, after taking delivery of its first E-Jets last August. The airline has plans for up to thirty E190s in their system, as part of its business strategy to add new nonstop flights from its hub in Urumqi, and to build connectivity throughout Xinjiang, a Chinese province rich in petroleum resources and tourism.

More than eleven hundred E-Jets have been ordered since the first aircraft entered revenue service seven years ago. Today, sixty airlines from forty countries, including six carriers from North America are flying Embraer E-Jets.
