2012 CONFERENCE EDITION
A llow me to address some of my thoughts and feelings over the past year. I can’t believe a year has passed! It is quite an honor
to be standing here In front of you once again. First, let me recog-
nize the valuable presence of our giant leaders, past ASPAN Presi-
dents – Susan Shelander & Pam Windle; and all our past TAPAN
Presidents. We need to take pride in having many accom-
plished, respected leaders from our great component. It is
also an honor to have our Region 2 Director - Armi Hol-
comb and ABPANC Representative - Annette Brancatti.
A long, long time ago (I am talking history now), on my first day of nursing school, our
Dean of Nursing asked our class “why do you want to be a nurse?” She said “Raise your
hands if you wanted to be a Nurse so you can go to the United States”. Slowly, almost all
hands went up; “Almost”… because mine remained on the table. My dream was to become
a nurse and be of service. My dreams did not include coming to America.
25 years have passed since I left the Philippines with a heavy heart; but I will never forget
the pride and joy I saw in my father’s eyes. The fulfillment of a lifelong dream, that his fa-
vorite daughter would leave her simple and sheltered life in the Philippines and go for the
American dream. My father, a very hardworking man who didn’t even graduate from col-
lege, worked his way up the ladder of success, by taking and passing every single govern-
ment exam until he became the head of his department. Perseverance! This is what I
learned from my father. To dream big and never give up; each day, to look forward and be
the best person you can possibly become.
Same goes for our profession and our organization, we must never give up. It’s getting
harder and harder to recruit and retain members and find replacement for our officers.
There are over 150 members in this room, but only a handful are officers and region lead-
ers. Why? When Nursing is evolving! The possibilities to grow are enormous and endless.
We need to be competitive and strive for only the best. Excellence must be the buzzword,
be it personally or professionally. Let us take the initiative to raise the bar and be accounta-
ble for every outcome we see in ourselves, our patient care, our profession and our organi-
zation. Get more involved! Yes, we live in very challenging times. We are in the middle of
these heated debates between two opposing presidential candidates. Different values, differ-

ent agenda. Soon we have to make a very important decision that would im-
pact not only the healthcare industry but the direction our great country is
going. We, as healthcare providers and all the patients entrusted to our care
are very much affected. We need to do our homework, read and ask ques-
tions. What are your values, what do you believe in? Our GAC chair, Cindy
Hill is great at giving us information. Read and be well informed. Let us join
hands with ASPAN and other organizations, to overcome any and all diffi-
culties; travel the long road to success with perseverance, especially on issues
related to nursing and healthcare.
TAPAN remains as strong as ever! We have accomplished so much over the
past year. Our vision has always been at the forefront, “Proud PeriAnesthe-
sia Nurses, providing the most excellent patient care”. We aimed, at all times,
in all of TAPAN’s activities, to uphold the values and meet the strategic goals
of our organization. Some of these strategic goals include promoting educa-
tional activities to all our members by providing conferences offering CE’s at
affordable fees; We had large attendance to ASPAN National Conferences
and we will continue to promote conferences where the best opportunities
are, to expand knowledge and learn new trends. We have new Education and
Research committee to be chaired by Tracey Allen, whose responsibility will
be to promote and coordinate all continuing education for all TAPAN re-
gions. Our goal is for each region to offer annual seminars and CE‘s in every
meetings, co-sponsored ASPAN seminars, and CPAN/CAPA review classes.
Mentoring and promoting Succession Planning is also one of our important
goals. TAPAN went to far away Lubbock for TAPAN on the Road, to in-
spire and motivate our not-so-interested members. The seminar was very
successful but they are still work in progress. We plan to do more exciting
TAPAN trips in the future. We invite members to join our Board meetings,
as well as post our Board meeting agenda on the EO to share what we do.
We wanted to be as transparent to members at all times and again to inspire
future leaders. We invite all members to Leadership conferences to motivate
and prepare you for leadership roles. We need to keep TAPAN and every
TAPAN region alive. Find ways to keep the fire of passion burning in our
hearts! Be prepared and willing to mentor nurses for Succession Planning. If
you ask a colleague to participate or run for office and the answer is “I am
not yet ready!”, let them know that “I am ready!” may never come; and the
“right time” is this time.
We worked hard on increasing and retaining active membership – We have
total of 1,044 active members with 64 members expiring. We had total of 67
recruiters and total of 90 recruits. TAPAN rewards a member who recruits

the most as Recruiter of the year. We started a new project - Member-get-a-
member campaign – for every member you recruit, you get your name in the
pot for a chance to win free one year ASPAN/TAPAN membership to be
drawn at State Conference each year. Recruit many more members and let
this year’s goal be: 1111 members.
Financial stability – Let me talk about money matters. We are in very good
standing. With Debra Bennett at the helm, TAPAN has been prudent in all
our financial businesses. You can rest assured, we will remain financially via-
ble.
Promote specialty certification – We won Shining Star award three years in a
row. It only shows how TAPAN promotes and supports our CPAN’s and
CAPA’s. We celebrated National Certified Nurses’ day and gave away five
scholarships to certified nurses, for free registration to this year’s State Con-
ference.
Increase scholarship and educational grants – We have reviewed and revised
policies to give every member easy chance to avail of our scholarship fund.
We were able to give members, total of 10 scholarships. I believe this year had
the most number of scholarships awarded to members in many years. We
also approved additional budget for Medical Mission Scholarship grant. Look
forward to TAPAN budgeting for more scholarships, as our finances would
allow.
My leadership journey was truly like a roller coaster ride. If I have to describe
it - fast and furious, twists and turns, round and round, with all the ups and
downs. However, unlike TAPAN and my leadership journey, roller coaster
rides could never compare to the amazing experiences I have shared with
many of you. I have met precious people who became close to my heart; de-
veloped friendships, long and lasting along the way. The rewards you cannot
possibly measure, the compensations that come in different shapes and sizes,
wrapped in different colorful packages, arriving at times you don’t even ex-
pect. Humbly, I say “Thank you” for all these gifts, most especially the love
and support you have given me.
Allow me to serve you for another year, another page to turn… Embracing
excellence and the endless possibilities to move TAPAN forward; hoping to
touch many more lives; to be that important link and make a difference in our
practice, our profession and our great TAPAN.
Thank you very much!!!!

TAPAN Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service award is given to one special TAPAN member whose dedication and service
were exemplary. It is recognition of a member, who goes above and beyond the call of duty. Every year,
TAPAN President may choose to personally select a well deserving member.
CONGRATULATIONS goes to Deborah Davis, for receiving this prestigious award during our 36th An-
nual State Conference. Her strong leadership qualities and many contributions to TAPAN and her region
are truly special. She served TAPAN/ASPAN in various leadership positions, currently TAPAN 2nd VP.
In her roles, she demonstrated immense integrity, sincerity and willingness to serve our patients, fellow
PeriAnesthesia nurses, the community and our organization. She is pas-
sionate about certification, serving as Certification Coach for many
years. She spearheaded a CPAN/CAPA review in the past. She regular-
ly submits articles published at Eye Opener on interesting topics and
important information to share with members. Deborah upholds the vi-
sion and goals of TAPAN at all times.
Deborah is also a great support and cheerleader for me, as TAPAN
President. She offers her time and wisdom in very special ways.

T aking inspiration from the 2012 Summer Olympic Games the planning committee for the 36th Annual Texas Association of Perianesthesia Nurses State Conference prepared as elite ath-
letes! This year’s conference took place September 14-16 in Sugar Land, Texas. Maria Teresa (Tess)
Limsiaco and I willingly served as conference co-chairs. We hit the ground running immediately
after the 35th state conference in Round Rock, Texas!
Mission #1: Select a passionate committee. Our team was composed of a mixture of experienced confer-
ence planners and eager first time members: Meggie Kwan, Lillian Bailey, Videlyn Ilacio-Uy, Sylva Mc
Clurkin, Celeste Jones and Elizabeth Martin stepped right up. This dream team was always willing to meet
throughout the year to create the best possible conference.
Mission #2: Locate the best venue for the conference. Weeks of hotel visits paid off when the Marriott
Sugar Land Town Square was chosen. This amazing venue proved to be a huge part of the overall success
of our conference. Aside from being beautiful, there were lots of shops and restaurants within walking dis-
tance.
Mission #3: Find current, dynamic speakers. Our faculty delivered intriguing lectures over the two and a
half day conference. The topics were diverse. Nurses who attended all three days had a possibility of earn-
ing 16 Contact hours.
Thank you again to the 2012 faculty:

T he 2012 TAPAN State Conference was held in Sugar Land with an attendance of
190! The number of attendees exceeded our expectations. The largest expense
for the conference was catering and hotel fees. Coffee, for example, costs $55 per gal-
lon, or $3.44 per cup. One bagel costs $2.66. I suppose that’s a good deal when com-
pared to popular coffee shops. When you look at the big picture, three days of coffee
and bagels costs $2,670.35. The Saturday luncheon featured salad, fresh vegetables,
Chicken Picatta, dessert, tea and coffee. The meal was delicious and only $42.00 a
plate (gratuity included, of course). Below is a cost analysis for the conference.
