Message from the President, International Federation of Gynaecologyand Obstetrics (FIGO)

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The world is witnessing an unprecedented interest in women’s and newborns’ health. Each one of us as individuals, and national, regional and sub regional societies can contribute to alleviate these problems. South Asian region has the largest population and harbour many of the deep rooted societal practises starting even before a child is born such as sex selected abortion, child hood marriage and labour, adolescent rape, gender based violence and honor and dowry related killing. Each society needs to work in these areas individually and collectively by joining hands with non-governmental and governmental organisations to reduce or abolish these practices.

The reproductive age women in the SAFOG region face the problems of anaemia, unplanned pregnancies, poor ante-natal care, suboptimal access to needed family planning and legalised abortion services. FIGO is working with some national societies in these issues and would like to explore the possibilities to replicate this work in other countries in a sustainable way.

The aging population presents a unique set of challenges medically and socially. We need to explore how best we can help the aging population live gracefully, by tackling the problems they develop such as post menopausal osteoporosis, fractures, urinary problems and increasing incidence of cancer. We need to promote healthy living to reduce morbidity and frailty.

The advances in technology, knowledge explosion, increased patient expectation and rising medical litigation demands us to know the latest in our field. The lectures, symposiums and workshops at this meeting is developed with this in mind with the participation of Japanese, Singaporean, Malaysian, and the Royal Colleges of the UK and Australia and New Zealand. The contribution by SIDRA, March of Dymes, WHO, UNFPA and other non-governmental organisations will make this meeting a unique one with high calibre science delivered on rights-based perspective.

It is our great pleasure to invite you to attend and participate in this meeting specially designed for you. In addition to science there will be an excellent social program. We want you to participate and help to resolve the issue of unmet needs of women’s health.Yours sincerely,

Sir Sabaratnam ArulkumaranPresident FIGO

Message from the President, South Asian Federation of Obstetrics andGynaecology (SAFOG)

South Asian Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Estd. 1996)Caring for women’s health through current evidences

Dear Colleagues,

I am sure that you are already aware of the fact that, FIGO –our International OBGY federation –has very kindly decid-ed to hold a joint conference with our own SAFOG at Colombo, with active all out support and collaboration by our friends from the Sri Lankan College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology—SLCOG. This will be an historic and memorable meet as, FIGO for the first time will be joining hands with SAFOG and SLCOG, to hold a regional conference in South Asia. This mega event is scheduled from 30th October to 2nd November, 2014, at the famous Bandaranayke Memo-rial International Conference Hall, at Colombo.

Women’s health scenario is rather unsatisfactory, to say the least – at this part of the world. There are many indices of women’s health issues, which are far from our promised goals. The need of the hour is to meet them with all our efforts. With this idea in mind, the theme of this congress is Unmet Need in Women’s Health. We will cover most of the issues related to this theme, and some renowned international, regional and local faculty will enlighten us about the most current updates on our specialty. You are most welcome to join this esteemed team of faculty.

Beauty is in the eyes of a beholder –this quote is very appropriate for the abundance of beauty in Sri Lanka, from Gale in the south to Jaffna in the north, not to forget the colonial capital Colombo or the hill station of Kandy. We request you not to miss this great opportunity. Come and see—surely you will never forget the nature’s beauty here.

We are looking forward to receive a large number of delegates from our own SAFOG region for this conference and as such we have kept the Registration fees of this conference, far below any international congress held now --only at $ 200.We have also organised plenty of accommodations at different star hotels –close to the congress venue for you to stay.

On behalf of SAFOG, I welcome you all to attend this international conference.

Yours Sincerely

Prof. Alokendu ChatterjeePresident SAFOG Mail: [email protected]: 0091 9830070191

Message from the President , Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians andGynaecologists (SLCOG)

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I’m happy to send this message to the FIGO /SAFOG International Conference which is held in association with the Annual SLCOG Sessions, in Sri Lanka this October. As the President of the SLCOG and being the professional host society I am looking forward to this mammoth international scientific conference to be held in Sri Lanka for the first time. We are very grateful to Prof. Sir. Arulkumaran the President FIGO and his council members, and Prof. Alokendu the President of the SAFOG and his council members for facilitating this process that culminates in to a magnificent conference.

The FIGO is the premier organization that brings together professional societies of obstetricians and gynecologists across the world under one umbrella. FIGO has done much work globally to tackle the problems like cervical cancer, maternal mortality, gender based violence, adolescence health issues and wellbeing of women of all ages in the world. Its effort in being a catalyst to share knowledge and the best practices in diagnostics and treatment in obstetrics and gynaecology is very much appreciated.

The willingness of FIGO & SAFOG to join us in this conference is historic and will bring a lot of pride and honor to our motherland whilst enhancing the standards of care dispensed to the women in our country and in the South Asian region due to the pooling and sharing of expertise.

We have been able to put together a very comprehensive and well-structured scientific program which is hosted on our official website. A galaxy of world renowned speakers is taking part in this conference and I must thank Prof. Malik Goonewardene the Chairman of the Scientific Committee and his team for the wonderful work, orchestrating all the arrangements smoothly and efficiently.

I must also take this opportunity to thank all our members in the other committees who worked tirelessly to make this event a success.

We warmly welcome all our guests from all over the world and we look forward to providing everyone the legendary hospitality for which Sri Lanka is most famous. Apart from our exhaustive academic line up, many social actives are planned for all our guests to enjoy every minute of their stay in this paradise isle.

I wish this event all success!

Deshabandu Dr. Kapila GunawardenaPresident – SLCOG

Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics

ALSO is an evidence based multidisciplinary training program that prepares maternity health care providers to better manage obstetric emergencies. ALSO’s evidence based learning path bridges knowledge gaps and boosts skill sets using a team based approach, hands on training, and mnemonics to reduce errors and save lives.

Participants attending an ALSO course learn practical, team based approaches to managing emergency situations, including postpartum haemorrhage, shoulder dystocia and pre-eclampsia and although labour & delivery room emer-gency care is the main focus of the program, the ALSO curriculum further addresses preventive care & practice concerns, such as first trimester complications, helping parents cope with a birth crisis and diagnostic ultrasound.(Participation is limited to nominations by the SAFOG member societies)
