FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Bouquet Canyon Creek Restoration Project? The primary purpose of this project is to restore habitat in Bouquet Canyon Creek. An important component of this restoration is reestablishing the creek's flow pattern and flow-carrying capacity such that the now-dry reaches of the creek can again receive water. Reestablishing creek flows to the southern end of Bouquet Canyon would potentially increase fish habitat and replenish the groundwater wells of residents downstream of the project site. The flow pattern reestablishment would also prevent flow impacts to Bouquet Canyon Road during reservoir releases and during many storm events. Potential project activities may include; sediment removal, stream channel re-contouring, establishment of native plant communities, bioengineered stabilization structures, and development of in-channel habitat structures.

What is the status of the Bouquet Canyon Creek Restoration Project? What happened to the plans that were in place August 2016? In August 2016, the draft CEQA document for the project was released for public review. At that time, the project involved restoration of 6 pre-defined project areas. In response to comments received during the public review period, the proposed study area has been expanded to a continuous 8-mile reach to provide for more effective restoration. LACDPW has hired a consultant to conduct the investigations and analysis necessary to asses current characteristics of the expanded reach and develop alternatives. The status of the project and the anticipated project schedule are posted on the Bouquet Canyon Creek Website and will be updated regularly.

Will special status species, such as the Unarmored Three-spine Stickleback (UTS), be impacted? UTS are a Federal Endangered Species and California Fully Protected Species. The purpose of the project is to ultimately restore and enhance habitat for UTS along Bouquet Canyon Creek. Prior to initiating field investigations and construction, LACDPW will coordinate with the appropriate jurisdictional agencies to obtain permit authorizations and minimize impacts to protected species.

Can I enter the creek and clear the sediment deposition myself? There are state and federal protections on the area, as well as presence of UTS habitat. No persons or agencies are authorized to conduct work in the creek without obtaining approval from the appropriate jurisdictional agencies. In addition, approvals will only be granted for work associated with UTS habitat restoration as authorized by Assembly Bill 353.
