In Week 11 of Term 1, the Intermediate Hub spent the day at the Home of Compassion in Island Bay. The key ideas of the day were around our school theme of being sent to serve and stepping up to leadership. Below are some of the thoughts and learnings that the students took away from their Retreat Day. A huge thank you to our fabulous parent/caregiver helpers who supported us on the day. Thank you Denise, Jill, Susanna, Natasha and Dana.

‘Bloom where you are planted’ means we can’t fight and fix every battle so we must instead work on what needs fixing around us. Rebecca C

I really enjoyed looking through the museum about Suzanne Aubert’s life. Everything was so detailed and old. Caylen

I learnt that is you want to help, the best place to start is with something small, in the place you are. Kenny

The thing I enjoyed most was moving through the Suzanne Aubert exhibition, finding out about her. Kayan

I most enjoyed seeing Suzanne Aubert’s last resting place. I also learnt that she spoke French when she arrived in New Zealand, then learnt to speak Te Reo Maori before learning English. Xavier

I learnt that as we pass people each day, they are all going through different things and have different feelings. Tehya

I enjoyed listening to Karen from the Soup Kitchen who explained how her job values all people in the community. I also learnt that Suzanne Aubert is almost the first saint of New Zealand. Paige

I learnt that we should not judge others by what they look like. We don’t know their story and what has happened or is happening to them. Louise

From OLRS Board of Trustees Welcome back to a full new term. I would like to welcome Eti Moananu to the Board as our new representative. We are pleased that he said “yes” and are sure he will be a great addition.

As everyone can see the new playground is going in which is very exciting. On behalf of the Board I would like to thank the Playground Committee who came up with the design and decided on the provider based on your feedback.

I would also like to thank FOS for their fundraising efforts and the individuals who donated amounts towards the Playground. In particular the Board wants to thank Jan Simmons who successfully applied for grants that enabled a $100,000 brand new playground to be built without needing to make any extra onerous demands on our families. We are so grateful and blessed by her hard work.

It is the Senior School camp next week, so we wish them a safe journey as they travel to Nelson where I know they will make amazing memories. Finally a reminder ERO is coming in the third week of this term which we are excited about, so we can see how we can improve on what we are doing for our children.

Intermediate age social gathering - The OLR church leadership team is considering a monthly social gathering for children around intermediate age (10-13). The proposed format is each parent would take a turn hosting an event – such as making food, board games, movies. We’re looking for registrations of interests from parents who’d like their kids to be involved and also happy to host two to three times a year depending on numbers. Please get in touch with Martin – [email protected]

  • Dear Parents and Caregivers, RE: Sacramental Programme 2018 The Sacramental Programme for 2018 will be commencing this term. The Sacramental Programme is for all those who are in Year 4 and over, who have been baptised and are ready to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion. The Sacramental Programme will be lead through the school, during school hours. The programme will be led by myself, Jane Carter, Director of Religious Studies (DRS) here at Our Lady of the Rosary School. Chaucey Ellis, a parent of the school and parish representative will be assisting with the programme. Father Michael will also be involved in the programme. The first Sacramental Parent Session will take place on Thursday 31st May, from 6.30 – 7.30pm, which will be held at school. At this session parents and caregivers will receive information regarding the programme. The Sacramental Programme is regarded as a home/school/parish programme with each taking a shared responsibility for educating and supporting our children in the development of their faith. The children will make their First Reconciliation on Thursday 14th June, at 6pm, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. We will be joining Sacred Heart Petone and San Antonio to celebrate Confirmation together on Sunday 5th August. The First Communion lessons for the children will be in Term 3, leading to the First Communion Mass on Sunday 16th September, at Our Lady of the Rosary Church. Due to a number of small costs to run the Sacramental Programme here at Our Lady of the Rosary School, we are asking if you could please pay $15 per child. This money will be going towards certificates, printing, candles, necklaces etc. If you have any problems or queries regarding this fee or programme, please do not hesitate to see me at school or send me an email at [email protected]. Please send your money to the school office. If your child/children will be receiving the Sacraments this year, please fill in the form below and return to the office by Wednesday 9th May. Please send a copy of your child’s Baptism certificate if your child was NOT baptised at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish. It is a real privilege to be involved in this programme and I look forward to working with you all during this very special time. Kind Regards Jane Carter (DRS)
