Happy Halloween!! It’s the last week in October, which means Halloween is right around the corner. We hope a lot of you were able to participate in the fun EMA events this weekend and we are looking forward to all of the new opportunities that will be coming up next month.

Event Spotlight: Signature Chefs Auction The March of Dimes, the leading non-profit organization for pregnancy and baby health, is holding a formal dinner and auction event on Thursday, November 6th at the Oasis Convention Center. EMA is volunteering for this event from 5-9 p.m. to help with set up, the silent auction, and tear down. This event features some of Southwest Missouri’s top chefs and great auction items that will benefit the March of Dimes. Some of the participating restaurants include Fire & Ice, Ocean Zen, The Argentina Steakhouse, & Trolley’s. This will be a great experience to see how an event comes together start to finish and it’s for a great cause. Reminder: The deadline for member dues payment has already passed. You can still become a member of EMA this semester, $35 for new members (includes EMA polo) and $20 for returning members, but you will not be eligible for funding for trips or tours. Also, students in Dr. Rothschild’s class who did not reach the payment deadline will not receive any extra credit. Industry News: Venues Comcast-Spectacor, a Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment firm, is installing two large interactive I-Walls at the Wachovia Center. They will provide fans with an intense experience and futuristic displays including memorable video highlights from the Philadelphia Flyers and 76ers. Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko stated that, “We always want to be on the cutting edge of technology and offer our fans the ultimate sports and entertainment experience each and every time they visit.” Luukko wanted to be the first to bring this new technology into a sporting arena. Each I-Wall is 24 feet long and the fans will be able to control the content on two LCD monitors. These interactive high definition screens were unveiled on October 11th. I-Walls can be found in the world’s most esteemed museums and science centers. For more information, visit www.wachoviacenter.com.

Member Spotlight: Zack Larsen Zack Larsen, EMA Treasurer, is an Entertainment Management Major graduating this December. In the Spring he will start the MBA program here at Missouri State. Zack is interested in sports and events and would like to work in game day operations or corporate relations for a professional soccer team. He worked with SGF soccer this past spring for his internship and currently works with the event staff for Intercollegiate Athletics and as a Freelance PR person for the Springfield Soccer Club. Zack is looking forward to meeting new members this year in EMA. Something you might not know about Zack is that he was born in Reno, Nevada. Some words of wisdom from Zack: “Don't be afraid to talk to industry professionals, the more you talk to them now, the more comfortable you will be talking with them when you are looking for a job or find a job. Also take any advice professors give you seriously, because they would not bother to mention it if they did not think it would help you.”

Hello EMA Members & Friends!

Welcome Back Everyone!! We hope that all of you had an awesome Fall Break this past weekend and were able to relax and catch up on things before the semester comes to a close. Enjoy your week and we hope to see some of you at the EMA events coming up soon. Next EMA Meeting The next EMA meeting will be held this Wednesday, October 22nd at 5 p.m. in Glass 102. Come celebrate Halloween with the leaders and wear your favorite costume. Free yummy Halloween candy will be provided!! We’ll have lots of new information about events coming up, including information about fundraising and speakers later on in the semester. We hope to see all of you there.

Event Spotlight: Spooktacular This Wednesday, October 22nd, the Dickerson Park Zoo will be holding their annual trick-or-treating event, Spooktacular. It starts at 6:30 p.m., so if you are attending, please wear a non-scary costume to the meeting and be ready to leave when it’s over. You’ll be able to hand out candy to kids as they roam through the zoo all dressed up for Halloween. This is a fun service opportunity! Bonus Event: Saw Movie Marathon EMA will be holding a Saw Movie Marathon on Sunday, October 26th from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. It will be held at Machelle Farmer’s apartment complex in their state of the art movie theater. Come hang out and get caught up on all four of these movies before the 5th one hits theaters. Hello EMA Members & Friends! Hello Everyone!! It’s almost Fall Break, which means we are half way through the Fall semester! It has gone so fast and we hope that everyone has been enjoying everything so far. We still have a lot more events coming up this year that you can get involved in. Upcoming Meeting: The next EMA meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 22

5 p.m. Come celebrate Halloween with your fellow EMA members. The leaders will be dressed up in costumes and there will be free food & candy! Of course there will be new information about what’s going on in EMA as well. Be sure to join us for a guaranteed great time! Event Spotlight: National Tour to San Francisco: It’s almost time for the long awaited national tour to San Francisco, California! EMA members are leaving this week to head to California and Jordan Wood, Tours & Speakers Leader, has a lot of great tours planned. Some of the tour highlights include AT&T Park, the Great American Music Hall, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, and the Moscone Center. This is sure to be a great trip for all those attending! We’ll be able to hear all about their experiences at the next EMA meeting on Oct. 22

Local: This Friday, October 17th

the Space Tones, one of LemonDrop Records’ bands, will be playing at Nathan P. Murphys downtown at 8 p.m. LemonDrop Records is a local company owned and operated by Missouri State’s own Kevin Ehlers and Charlie Rosenbury. Other artists playing that night will be The

Reverend Skeez and DJ Roach. It is an all ages show, costing $3 for 21 and up and $7 for minors. It would be great for EMA members to come out and show support for LemonDrop and it should be a great show! It is over Fall Break, so if you are still in town, be sure to check it out. For more information visit http://www.lemondroprecords.com. MEISA: The first MEISA (Music & Entertainment Industry Student Association) meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 21

st at 8 p.m. It will be at the Magic Bean at the corner

of Grand and National in the Bear’s Mall (next to the Conoco). The Wisenheimers will be playing at 10 p.m. If you attend the meeting, MEISA will cover the $2 charge to get into the show. This will be a great way to get involved in MEISA and learn more about the organization and the music industry. Reminder: In order to be eligible for trips, tours, and events and get extra credit in Dr. Rothschild’s class, you must apply for membership online through the EMA Facebook Webpage or Blackboard and pay your dues by Tuesday, October 14

th, 2008. Dues for new members are $35 (which includes an EMA polo) and returning members are $20 per

semester. Please complete the application as soon as possible. Also, students in Dr. R’s class will get 3 extra credit points for every event they attend and 1 extra credit point for chalking before meetings, but you must be a paying member in order to get the points.

Springfield Cardinals Internship Program: It provides a hands-on learning experience in specific areas, as well as a comprehensive view of minor league baseball administration. Applicants should have a strong interest in pursuing a career in professional sports, be highly motivated and hard working, and have a willingness to work long hours and weekends. The start date for these unpaid internships is mid-March. It would be preferred that applicants be available for the entire 70-game season (beginning of April though Labor Day Weekend). You must be receiving college credit to be eligible. Training positions include, but are not limited to, the following: Ticket Sales, Group Sales, Promotions,

Baseball Operations, Stadium Operations, Media Relations, Public Relations, Community Relations, & Various Game Night Duties. The application process has started for the 2009 season. To be considered for

an internship, please e-mail a letter of interest, resume, and list of references to Duane Miller at [email protected].

Member Spotlight: Amy Hargrove is currently a junior here at Missouri State majoring in Entertainment Management with an emphasis in music. She is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma and transferred to MSU because of the EM program. Since she just moved to Springfield, she is very excited about meeting new people in EMA that share her interests and can help her get involved in the community. Something interesting about Amy that you may not know is that she has been singing and performing since she was 5 years old. She’s been in numerous talent competitions and performed at various festivals throughout the Midwest. Her career goal is to become her own agent/manager and promote herself throughout the music industry or promote someone else that she believes could make it. She also works a Iron Horse Stables, which is a biker bar/motel/restaurant in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She bartends/waitresses and gets to sing every Saturday night. She loves being able to meet new people every time she performs. Overall, Amy is very excited to be a part of the EMA program and learn more about the entertainment industry. Make sure to say HI to Amy at the next EMA event…maybe she’ll even sing for you!

Event Spotlight: Incredible Pizza Social This Wednesday, October 8

th, EMA will be holding a social event at Incredible Pizza

located off of South Campbell Road, just north of Battlefield Road. It will last from 6-9 p.m. and will cost $7 for paid members and $14 for non-paid members. This will include unlimited pizza buffet, drinks, and unlimited games for one hour. th, the Taste of Springfield

was held downtown along South Street and into the Square. It was a festival full of food, music, competitions, and activities for children. Festival-goers were able to purchase 10 tickets for $10 and taste great food from local restaurants, such as Trolley’s, South Avenue Pizza Company, Fire & Ice, and Maria’s Mexican Restaurant. There were two Iron Chef Competitions held between local restaurants and cooking demonstrations from local chefs and restaurant owners. Along with all of the food there was live music throughout the day and numerous activities for kids to enjoy. National The VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2008 premiers tonight, October 6

th, at 9 p.m. Tracy

Morgan is the host this year and expects an amazing event honoring Hip Hop’s contribution to the music industry. “Every year VH1 celebrates the vision, innovation, and groove power of the seminal artists who helped make hip hop such a strong cultural force around the world” (VH1.com). Be sure to tune into VH1 tonight to watch the event and celebrate Hip Hop’s honorable musicians. Industry News: Venues New Opening! The new BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma celebrated its grand opening on August 30-31. The downtown entertainment venue started construction three years ago and the management team at SMG planned a free weekend for everyone to enjoy the opening with events such as Garth Brooks and the Eagles. This 19,199-seat arena will offer a wide array of events from concerts, to football games, to hockey matches. The waiting is now over and fans can finally enjoy everything this new venue, the BOK Center, has to offer. Member Spotlight: Robert Stewart, Jr. is a senior majoring in Mass Media and Digital Film production. The number one thing he is looking forward to this year is meeting new people and volunteering whenever possible. Robert is also looking forward to Pollstar in the Spring. One of his past experiences with EMA that he will never forget is going to LA and Chi town. He got to know really great people and got a chance to be part of history when the writer’s strike happened in LA, which allowed

him to connect with some writers. Upon graduation Robert wants to go to film school somewhere which is in the works as we speak! One thing that you might now know about Robert is that he recently got his certificate in Screenwriting for Television and Film from MSU this past summer. WORDS OF ADVICE-Don't wait until the last minute to get involved, get involved early and get connected to a network that can open doors for you later along the road.

We have a lot of new and exciting activities going on this week, so be sure to get involved and spend

some time with your fellow EMA members and friends.

Meeting This Week

We have an all-member EMA meeting this Wednesday, Oct. 1st

at 5 p.m.

in Glass 102. We will have free food from Old Chicago at the start of the meeting, so be sure to get

there early!! Old Chicago just opened off of Glenstone and Independence St. They offer real

Chicago-style pizza, calzones, pasta, sandwiches and much more! They also carry 110 beers from all

over the world. Definitely check them out and tell them thanks for the generous donation to EMA!

We will also have a guest speaker from the Disney College program to talk about opportunities for

internships. Come and join your EMA Leaders and Industry Reps to keep up to date with what’s going

on and enjoy some yummy food from Old Chicago!

Event Spotlight: Rutledge-Wilson Farm Corn Maze

Every weekend in October (Thursday-Saturday) EMA will be participating in

the Rutledge-Wilson Farm Corn Maze. Shifts are from 5-9 p.m. and dinner

and a t-shirt will be provided. This is a great service opportunity that will

be a lot of fun. The farm offers a 10-acre corn maze along with a pumpkin

patch and hay rides. There are a lot of opportunities to participate since it

is going on every weekend, so we hope you can join us for this awesome

Fall service opportunity. For more information and to sign-up, contact

Member Spotlight: Jay Cadman is an Entertainment Management major

and graduates in 81 days (who’s counting?!) He is originally from Lee’s

Summit, MO and is interested in the music side of the entertainment

industry. This summer he was the Production and Operations Intern at the

Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. Jay is very excited to

attend Pollstar in 2009 to learn more about the music industry and

network with professionals. Something interesting that you may not know

about Jay is that 311 is his all-time favorite band. He has seen them live 13

times in four different states (MO, KS, TN, LA) and finally got the

opportunity to meet them while interning at the Sandstone Amphitheater.

A word of advice from Jay: “Be Nice!” Introduce yourself to Jay at the next

EMA event!!

Hello Everyone!!

Welcome back to another great week filled with awesome Entertainment Management Association

events!! We have a lot going on this week and we hope our members will be able to join us at our

meeting, service opportunities and our first tour of the semester!

Annual Entertainment Management Stakeholder’s Meeting

The Annual Entertainment Management Stakeholder’s Meeting will be held this Wednesday,

September 24th

at 6:30 p.m. in Glass 102. You will learn everything you need to know about the EM

major and also hear from your EMA executive team. Dr. Philip Rothschild, Director of the

Entertainment Management Program, will have an awesome slideshow filled with information about

the EM program. You can also hear from EM Alumni and see what they have been up to. There will

be a panel of experts from the entertainment industry ready to tackle any questions you have. Along

with all of the fun and the detailed information, we will have free Chipotle burritos, chips and

beverages!!! Lastly, we will have prizes and giveaways for those in attendance. We hope everyone is

able to attend this great event and gain a better understanding of what the EM major is really about.

Event Spotlight: Showboat Branson Belle Tour

Our first tour of the semester will be held on Monday,

September 29th

. We will be meeting at 5:45 p.m. in the Cherry

St. Parking Garage (Bear Park North). The tour of the Showboat

begins at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Janet Oller, one

of our EM professors, will be covering the cost of the show, but would like each participant to bring

$7 for the wait staff. Please contact Jordan Wood at [email protected] as soon as

possible if you would like to attend. Also, if you are willing to drive to Branson, let her know and EMA

will reimburse you for the gas. This is a very fun tour, so we hope you can come!!

Member Spotlight: Dan Ortega is an Entertainment Management major

and a junior here at MSU. He is originally from Colorado Springs, CO and is

excited to be a part of the EMA team as the Sports Industry Rep. He is

most excited about gaining experience through EMA and attending the

Super Bowl in the spring. He hopes to one day work for a Major League

Soccer team or any other professional sports team, preferably in Colorado.

One thing you might not know about Dan is that he is a military brat and

has lived all over the world from Germany to Italy, including all over the

U.S. Stop by and say Hi to Dan at the EM Stakeholder’s Meeting this

Wednesday!

It’s finally starting to feel like Fall outside! We hope everyone had a great weekend and is off to a

good start this week. Homework is probably starting to pile up but hopefully everyone has some free

time to enjoy EMA events this week!

Meeting This Week

We are having our next meeting this week on Wednesday, Sept. 17th

at 5 p.m. in Glass 102. Come

and hear what information your leaders have to share this week. There will be important information

about the Super Bowl and potential fundraising & service opportunities. Also, the Industry Reps will

have updated information about their specific sectors to share with members. We will have free food

and this will be another great time to get to know other members and the leaders. Hope to see you

BBQ Social

Don’t forget about the EMA BBQ Social this week. It will be held

this Thursday, Sept. 18th

from 5-8 p.m. at Phelps Grove Park. Hamburgers, hot

dogs, drinks, and snacks will be provided. Feel free to bring snacks to share and

also bring some friends! Hopefully the weather will hold up for us and we can enjoy

spending some time together outside of school.

Member Spotlight: Shanna Mott is a senior and an Entertainment

Management major. She is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is most

excited about developing the music industry side of EMA and further

developing her leadership skills through serving as the Music Industry Rep

for EMA. Her favorite EMA memory was her trip to New York last spring

for the MEISA (Music & Entertainment Industry Student Association)

conference. Something interesting about Shanna is that she is Native

American, more specifically Cherokee. Currently she is working as a

stagehand at Juanita K. Hammons Hall and with Lemon Drop Records to

build experience in the music industry. She also helped develop a MEISA

student chapter here at MSU. She plans on interning at a venue, either at

the House of Blues or back home in Tulsa. If you’re interested in the music

side of entertainment, Shanna is definitely your go-to person! Be sure to

say hello to her at the meeting this Wednesday.

Hello Everyone!!

The third week of classes are well on their way and hopefully everyone is getting back into the swing

all of the new people interested in EMA and ready to learn about what we have to offer this year.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

We apologize for the short notice of the BBQ Social cancellation. We were holding out, hoping the

weather would clear up, but it definitely wasn’t a nice enough day to grill out. We are planning on

rescheduling the BBQ for Thursday, Sept. 18th

from 5-8 p.m. at Phelps Grove Park. Hamburgers, hot

dogs, and beverages will be provided. Please feel free to bring any snacks to share. Hopefully the

weather will be nice and we can enjoy hanging out and meeting new friends.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17th

at 5 p.m. in Glass 102. Your leaders will have

more opportunities available for fundraising and service events, as well as updated information for

the national tour to San Francisco, California that will be held over Fall Break. Be sure to attend to

stay up to date on the latest information from EMA. There will be free food and beverages provided.

Member Spotlight: Cassie Alsbach is from Festus, MO and is a senior

graduating this May with her Entertainment Management degree. She is

currently the Event Industry Representative for EMA and is excited about

finding opportunities within the event industry that she can share with

fellow students. She is also working as Dr. Rothschild’s Student Assistant

and will serve as a great resource for students who have questions about

EM classes and internships. Cassie is looking forward to attending Pollstar

in the spring so she can network with industry professionals and gain more

experience in the field. This summer she worked as the Marketing and Box

Office Intern at the Family Arena in St. Charles, MO. Something interesting

about Cassie is that she recently found out that she will be her sister’s

maid of honor in January, which she is very excited about! Be sure to stop

by and say hello to Cassie at the next EMA event.

Welcome Back EMA Members & Friends!

Hello Everyone!!

We hope that all of our Entertainment Management Association members and friends have had

a great summer. We are excited to be back for the Fall semester and we look forward to all the

exciting events we have planned for you in the upcoming months.

Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at 5 p.m. in Glass 345. There will be free

food and beverages. Come and meet your Executive Leadership Team and the newly elected

Industry Reps for this year. This will be a great time to join in on the fun and get to know your

fellow EMA members. Introduce yourself to someone new and hear about all the fun ideas the

Leadership Team has planned for you this year!!

Reminder: In order to be eligible for trips, tours, and events you must apply for membership

online at http://theemlife.com and pay your dues by Tuesday, October 14th, 2008. Dues for new

members are $35 (which includes an EMA polo) and returning members are $20 per semester.

Also, students in Dr. Rothschild’s class will get 3 extra credit points for every event they attend

are welcome to bring their own snacks to share.

Member Spotlight: Becky Migas joined EMA this year from Columbus,

Ohio and is working towards her MBA at Missouri State. She graduated

from The Ohio State University in 2004 and worked at the Nationwide

Arena for 4 years, PromoWest Productions for 2 ½ years, and Music In

The Air, a festival production company, for 1 year. She has been

appointed as the Venue Industry Rep for EMA and is excited to be a

part of the organization. She hopes she will be able to bring her

experience and knowledge of the venue industry to EMA. She is most

excited about meeting new friends and going to Pollstar in the spring.

Something you might find interesting to know about Becky is that she

has been to over 100 concerts in the last 5 years. During the first

meeting be sure to stop by and say hello to Becky!
