Incorporating English into Everyday LifeThe key to improving any skill in English is practice. By using English everyday, even if just for a few minutes, your abilities will improve. So let’s think about the technology you use everyday and how you can use that to incorporate English into your life.

Smart phones are such an important part of every day life, and nearly everyone has them. One simple way to add a bit more English into your life can be to change the language setting on your phone. Now this would be a drastic change, and may prevent the use of Chinese characters, so you may want to ease into it by changing the language settings on a few apps first.

The app used most by the average college student is Google. Changing the language setting to English on this app is a simple and effective way to force yourself to use more of your target language. Some of your

teachers may already have told you that you must do your research in English in order to find the appropriate

vocabulary for essays and presentations. By changing your google settings to English, you can avoid the temptation of researching in your native language and help yourself in the long run to learn more English.

Another way to include more English in your life is to play fun games in English! There are a number of apps that replicate English games you may already know. “Words with Friends” is one such app. This game is the phone version of scrabble. It tests your knowledge and spelling of English words, and can be played with other friends who have the app or against the computer.

You can also test your English vocabulary with “4 Pics 1 Word.”

Our Drop-in Centre is located in LBY 202. It is open Monday-Friday 10:30am-1:30pm and 3pm-6pm.

The WAP is located in LBY 205. It is open (by appointment only) Monday-Friday 10am-12:30pm and 3pm-5:00pm.

The RAP and SAP are located in MLLC 1 on the second floor of the library. SAP runs Monday-Friday 10:30am-1:30pm and 3pm-5pm. RAP runs Monday-Friday 5pm-6pm. Both of these services require you to preregister on Moodle.

Culture CornerWhy do people dress up for Halloween?

In olden times, people believed that on All Hallows Eve the line between the spirit world and ours was weakened, letting spirits wander freely. In order to hide from the ghosts and discourage their mischief, people would dress up to confuse them. Today we continue this tradition in order to have fun and enjoy tricks and treats!

What will you dress up as this year?

This game app shows you four images and you have to guess a word based on those pictures. This one can be a bit more challenging, but it tests your vocabulary in a visual way.

The British Council also has put out some interesting apps to help students practice their English skills. “Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge” quizzes you on the use of different forms of grammar, vocabulary and spelling in 60

seconds. This app is really designed for English learners, and is a great way to test your knowledge.

For those searching for games on your computer, the trivia game “Sporcle” comes to mind. It offers trivia on any range of subjects, from Disney characters to world geography. It can be a fun way to spend the afternoon using English.

By changing your language settings, using English game apps or playing trivia games online, you can incorporate English into your everyday life and improve your skills! Give it a try!
