Your 2018/19 VETs: Carol, Olivia, Amala, Jarin and Allie
Your 2018/19 VETs Hello to all our new students, and to all our
returning students, welcome back to Lingnan!
We hope you had a great summer! We’re your
Visiting English Tutors for this year. We are all
very much looking forward to meeting you
guys and helping you with your English and, of
course, having a lot of fun at the same time.
Although we’ve only been here a couple of
weeks, we VETs have been busy developing
our services for this year and also settling in to
our Hong Kong life. We’ve eaten out a lot,
been to see Crazy Rich Asians (Carol and Jarin
have written some reviews below!) and
explored our new home.
Our Services There have been a few changes to our services
so keep reading to find out. The Drop-in
Centre can no longer be used for credit, it is
just a place for you to come if you need any
help. To get credit you must instead come to
our workshops. Also, this year we have added
another Writing Tutorial Service (WTS). This
will take place in the library. Make sure you
pay attention when you’re booking so you
don’t turn up at the wrong WTS! Our
workshops help you improve in different areas
of English. We can help you write better
essays, improve your presentation skills, get
better at academic reading and prepare for
the IELTS test. You can sign up for our services
here. Bookings are open now so get signing up
whilst you can!

VETs at the Movies: Crazy
Rich Asians Crazy Rich Asians is a film based on a book
by Kevin Kwan which tells the story of
Chinese American New Yorker, Rachel Chu
(Constance Wu), and her journey to
Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick
Young’s (Henry Golding) affluent family.
Little does she know, Rachel finds herself
having to negotiate her Asian American
identity with his mother’s expectations of
an ideal Chinese family. This movie is
pivotal since it is the first to have an all
Asian leading cast within 25 years, the last
being The Joy Luck Club. Overall, the
romantic love story was entertaining to
watch with a phenomenal Mandarin,
English, Cantonese soundtrack and
beautiful cinematography. Director Jon M.
Chu truly channeled his life experiences
growing as an Asian American and worked
hard with his team to bring this story and
to life. The two times I watched it in
theaters the Hong Kong audience members
seemed to have enjoyed the movie very
much so I highly recommend it!
By Carol Li
Bonus: Book Review For any of you who didn’t read the book but
saw the movie Crazy Rich Asians, I would still
recommend it! The novel gives the characters
much more depth and truly helps the reader to
understand the motivation behind some of
their actions. Moments which are only briefly
mentioned in the movie jump to life on the
pages of the book. One thing I didn’t like was
that after a while, I found the plot’s repetitive
and trivial dramas to be cumbersome. The
characters are well founded, but the plot is full
of cookie cutter problems that drag on for
many chapters. The book ends quite differently
to the movie, which took me by surprise. I later
found out that the second book “China Rich
Girlfriend” catches up on some of these plot
points, so that will be next up on my reading
list. Overall, it’s a funny and heartwarming
series that’s worth checking out!

VETs Recommend: Words with Friends Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been loving the
game called Words with Friends. If you’ve ever played
Scrabble it’s very similar but if you haven’t here’s how it
works. You can either download the app from the Play
Store or the App Store, or you can play it over Facebook
messenger. Each player is given seven random letters
and the aim is to make a word and the higher the word
scores, the better. Each word you put down has to be
linked to a word already on the board. Even for us
native English speakers, the game is a great chance for
us to really challenge our vocabulary so we can win! If
you want to practice your English and get competitive
with your friends then Words with Friends is the game
for you!
Have a go at our wordsearch! The first person to bring a successfully completed
wordsearch to the Drop-in Centre (LBY 202) will win a prize!
