Perkins was founded in 1829 as the first school for the blind in the United States. Today, Perkins advances its mission through five divisions: School for the Blind, International, Library, eLearning and Products.

For over 60 years, teachers have come from all over the world to study at Perkins Educational Leadership Program. Mrs. Wadad Lahoud Lebanon ELP Graduate, 1955. Founder and Principal of the School for the Deaf and Blind in Lebanon. She still works with local benefactors to support her school.

Mr. Pedro A. Salinas Panama ELP Graduate, 1954Founder and Director of Patronato Luz del Ciego, working with people who are blind or low vision in Panama. He recently received Panamas Best Teacher award.

For over 60 years, leaders in the disability and education field have come from all over the world to study at Perkins Educational Leadership Program, the flagship training initiative for international educators.

Every fall a select group of educators is invited to Perkins historic campus to take part in the ELP. Every spring they emerge ready to make a difference.

Meet two graduates from the 1950s Mrs. Lahoud from Lebanon and Mr. Salinas from Panama who have devoted their lives to impacting children who are blind with additional disabilities.

Both graduated from Perkins ELP and returned to their home countries where today, over 60 years later, they hold leadership positions and recently received honors for their impacts on children with disabilities. 3

ELP graduates have diverse backgrounds and work around the globe, but their careers share the same upward trajectory.Ms. Xiaguang Peng ChinaELP Graduate, 1994Ms Peng currently works for the China Ministry of Education and pioneered programs for multiple disabilities in China.Ms. Delia Gongora ArgentinaELP Graduate, 2006Ms Gongora oversees teacher training in Buenos Aires, Argentina where she has developed dramatic expansion of services for children with multiple disabilities.

The graduates of the ELP live and work around the globe. Their backgrounds are diverse. But their careers frequently share the same upward trajectory.Many ELP graduates, like Xiaguang Peng (pronounced: Zha-guang Pong) of China, rise through the ranks to become prominent educators in their home countries. Since the late 1990s, Peng (Pong) has served as a key liaison between Perkins and the Ministry of Education in China. This collaboration has resulted in the successful launch and ongoing expansion of programs for children with multiple disabilities across China.

Delia Gongora from Argentina is another notable ELP graduate. And though Delia graduated from the ELP just eight years ago, she now oversees teacher training across Argentinas most populous province. Delia helped change an education system that a decade ago educated fewer than 100 children with multiple disabilities. Today, that number is 1,300 children and the quality of services is higher than ever before.Peng (Pong) and Delia are just two ELP graduates who are making a difference around the world every day. There are many more ELP graduates just like them.

With your generous support, the success of the Educational Leadership Program and the hundreds of thousands of children around the world impacted by its graduates will be guaranteed in perpetuity.

Today, more than 250 ELP graduates work around the world, changing the lives of children who are blind, deafblind, and may have multiple disabilities. With the support of the King Faisal Foundation, we will be able to strengthen our presence in member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
