The Lumen Prize

The Lumen Prize is the university's newest and most prestigious academic award. Each year, 15 rising Elon juniors receive $15,000 scholarships to support their academic achievements and potential. The awards can be used during the students' junior and senior years to fund tuition costs as well as research, international study, internships, equipment and supplies, and other approved expenses.

Spend a semester, summer or year conducting original research with a faculty mentor. Sophisticated on-campus resources empower you to take on work typically found at the graduate level. A number of Elon students present their research at regional, national and even international conferences. Summer Research Fellowships

SURE Fellows, Summer Undergraduate Research Experience students, spend eight weeks as full-time co-researchers with faculty mentors. They receive stipends and on-campus housing. Students compete for SURE Fellowships, which are awarded based on an application and proposal prepared collaboratively with their mentors.

Alumna update Tori Davis ’09 is a Fulbright Scholar who researched Japanese value diplomacy at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. She is pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Elon’s Project PERCS, Program for Ethnographic Research and Community Studies, supports teams of students, faculty and community leaders in multi-year, interdisciplinary, ethnographic projects.

The first Project PERCS initiative explored the Cowee Valley, a region

that lies in the heart of the Little Tennessee River Valley in North Carolina. Students and faculty worked with quilters, documented stories of Cowee elders, participated in the preservation of a community general store and practiced ethno-photography. Their work was presented at the University of Pennsylvania Education Ethnography

Conference, the Appalachian Studies Conference and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. The project was exhibited at the Cowee general store and a scholarly article about the initiative was published in Anthropology of Education Quarterly.

Dr. Tom Mould, sociology and anthropology, is the director of PERCS and teaches a class in which students produce their own video ethnographies. Several of his students’

videos have garnered national and international attention.

Dr. Bird Stasz, education, is leading the Cowee project and has been doing international development work in education for nearly 20 years. The work takes her to the four Central Asian Republics to train teachers and improve the physical infrastructure of the schools.

Volunteering meets active learning

Service learning integrates what you learn in the classroom while helping those who need it most. Education majors tutor children learning English, sport and event management majors work with non-profit agencies to plan community events, and human service studies majors help community organizations assess the effectiveness of outreach efforts.

AmAndA BRown ‘10Major: MathematicsMinors: African/African American Studies, Public Health

Amanda blended service and academics into sustainable work that is changing lives. As part of the Periclean Scholars Class of 2010, she spent three years working to improve health care access in Ghana. Amanda bridged her work in Ghana with her academic ambitions by developing a mathematical model that demonstrates the value of using bed nets to lower malaria infection rates.

Elon’s nearly 11-year partnership with Project Pericles, a national non-profit organization, has produced projects of global change while also creating greater awareness of civic engagement and social responsibility on campus. Freshmen can apply to be Periclean Scholars and those selected work together to design and implement three-year projects that have included working to open a health care clinic in Ghana, helping to build a village in Zambia and building a school in Mexico – changing lives one brick at a time.

Tops in the nation For the fourth year in a row, Elon has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for commitment to service learning and civic engagement.

Service trips are also offered throughout the year to both domestic and interna-tional locations. You could spend Spring Break working with at-risk youth in Honduras or a long weekend helping rebuild communities decimated by Hurricane Katrina.

Hal Martin ‘09 works in Midwest Rubber’s China office. A summer internship in Shanghai with Alcatel-Lucent cemented his conviction to live and work in China.

Erin Barnett ‘09 works at Jigsaw Productions in New York City and has had her documentary, “My Name is Anita,” screened at the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. ABBE GOLDING ’10 Major: Psychology Minor: Biology

There aren’t many 23-year-olds who’ve worked elbow-to-elbow with world-renowned physicians. Abbe, who interned in the Duke University School of Medicine’s Division of Medical Genetics, is an exception. She scheduled echocardiograms, participated in patient consultations, sat in on roundtable discussions and presented research on genetic disorders to Duke specialists. It was time well spent as Abbe worked toward a career as a genetic counselor.

“My time at Duke taught me so much about how a clinic works, how it functions. I had some of the world’s foremost researchers helping me apply to graduate school.”

Abbe is pursuing her M.A. in genetic counseling at Brandeis University.

Spend four years in the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program and emerge with the skills and mental prowess necessary to demonstrate leadership in all that you do. Put your newfound skills to work in class, as a leader in a student organization or as a leadership studies minor. The leadership program culminates in a project to benefit the common good. Recent accomplishments include:

Opening a community and cultural center for African refugee families and coordinating more than 40 volunteers to provide support.

Establishing a sign language club and American sign language course.

Launching a teacher supplies warehouse called Classroom Closet where local teachers can obtain supplies for their students.

Founding the Elon Microfinance Initiative, an organization focused on supplying loans, savings and other basic financial services to the poor.

Creating the Sexual Assault Restorative Justice Project, which facilitates restorative justice for sexual assault survivors and friends through art therapy.

Elon’s dual-degree engineering program combines courses in the liberal arts and sciences with those focusing on engineering. After completing their studies, engineering majors earn a bachelor’s degree from an affiliated engineering school and a bachelor’s degree in one of six supportive Elon liberal arts concentrations.

Dan Glass works with Dr. Ben Evans to try to produce magnetic microparticles, which could be used for more efficient drug delivery to patients undergoing chemotherapy.

When Katie graduated, she opted out of a traditional job search. Armed with what she learned at Elon, Katie laid plans to pursue a dream that began when she was 5-years-old. She wanted to build her own enterprise. Be her own boss. And she is.

Just a few months after graduation, Katie started her own photography business and is working full-time as co-founder of Run It Off, a fitness company founded with Brent Gilmore, another Elon Entrepreneurship graduate.

Katie prepped herself for success with study abroad experiences in both Denmark and Barbados. She also rubbed elbows with successful CEOs and was singled out by Stanford University in a field of 500 entries for her work on a group video in the university’s Global Innovation Challenge.

The state-of-the-art Ernest A. Koury, Sr. Business Center was designed with study and meeting areas to encourage student-faculty collaboration. It includes three computer labs, interview and seminar rooms and the LaRose Digital Theatre, a 240-seat facility wired for multimedia and videoconferencing technology.

Dr. Brooke Barnett is director of the Elon Program for Documentary Production. She has worked as a news director, documentary producer, reporter and host/producer in public television. She helps students take documentary film ideas from conception to post production.

Dr. David Copeland has written extensively on the colonial press, and on religion and the media. He is the author of many books and the editor of several online scholarly projects and multivolume book series, as well as the director of Elon’s Interactive Media master’s degree program.

RAndy GyllEnhAAl ’101st Place in the William Randolph Hearst Foundation’s National Television Broadcast News Championship

Randy had worked toward this moment for years. It was just him, a camera, some audio equipment and the entire city of San Francisco. Now all he needed was a brilliant story idea. Randy was one of five finalists and to win it all, he had to conceive, shoot and edit a TV news story on an economic topic impacting the Bay Area. This was no moment to panic. Randy hustled into action, buffered by years spent working with Elon’s student-run TV news show, Phoenix14News. Randy had covered presidential debates, reported live from President Obama’s inauguration, and served as an anchor and senior correspondent. The Hearst assignment was tough, but he was prepared. Randy came up with a story that focused on the fishing industry and sailed into first place. Creativity. Experience. Success.

Randy went to work immediately after graduation and is a reporter for Hearst Television at WPTZ in Burlington, Vt. covering news throughout northern New England.

Dr. Stephen Byrd spent 10 years teaching in elementary schools. He conducts research on special education

issues. He has traveled to southern India to consult with parents and to give lectures related to special education issues at a school for students with intellectual disabilities.

KARA CowdRiCK ‘10Major: Elementary EducationWinner of Elon’s Outstanding Academic Service-

Learning Student Paper

Kara’s college search was about so much more than academics. She demanded a university that would prep her not only for professional success, but also for a fulfilling life. In Elon’s School of Education, she found a program that would test her academically while ensuring she had nearly limitless opportunities to incorporate service into the curriculum. Kara taught lower-income children in Honduras, constructed an outdoor classroom for North Carolina students, tutored children learning to speak English and worked in local classrooms beginning her freshman year.

During one of her classroom experiences, Kara worked with a student struggling to read. She learned what motivated him and then crafted lessons to address his challenges while reinforcing his interests. Her assessment of the experience earned her Elon’s award for Outstanding Academic Service-Learning Student Paper.

Kara, a fifth grade teacher in a Georgia Title I school, reports she is “living my dream.” She works with students from around the world and uses her Spanish skills daily.

Dr. Jean Rattigan-Rohr, education, is the author of “Valued Voices,” a play about learning complexities faced by minority students in American public high schools. Rattigan-Rohr has conducted research about family involvement in education and the challenges faced by struggling readers. She teaches a course that pairs Elon education majors with local children who find reading daunting.

Janna Anderson, communications, is director of imagining the internet and has mentored students covering internet Governance Forums in Athens, Greece; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Anderson was named the nation’s top journalism educator by the Association for Education in Journalism and mass Communication.

Dr. Shawn Tucker, fine arts, is widely publicized in interdisciplinary arts journals and has a forthcoming book about the seven virtues and seven vices in the artss. Tucker is also at work on scholarship dealing with how laughter helps students become comfortable with cognitive conflict.

Dr. Earl Honeycutt, marketing and entrepreneurship, is the 2008 winner of Elon’s distinguished Scholar Award. dozens of his articles have appeared in the top journals in his field and he has co-authored four sales and back-to-business books in the past eight years. honeycutt is a cross-cultural management specialist who has led study abroad groups to the Philippines, Australia, England and Japan.

Dr. Jim Bissett, history, is co-founder of Elon’s oral history Program and focuses much of his research on social movements. his interest in the American Civil Rights movement and its history led him to start a project on race relations in Elon’s home county, Alamance, during the Civil Rights era. he is focusing on the desegregation of Alamance County public education in the years following the Brown decision.

Leadership —begin your Gap Semester in the western U.S. in a three-week experience offered by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Experience the wilderness while you learn outdoor skills, leadership and environmental ethics.

You’ll do all this and more in Elon’s new Gap Semester Program, a special 13-week fall term experience designed for students who wish to begin their Elon education at a different academic pace —earning up to 8 hours of academic credit—and through a different perspective. Students will have an initial on-campus orientation to the Gap Semester and then return to Elon for the January Winter Term and spring semester.

Who is eligible?The Gap Semester Program is only for students who plan to attend Elon and who are high school graduates who meet the university’s standard for freshman admission. Apply directly to the program via the freshman application with all required materials submitted no later than November 1. Fifteen students will be admitted and decisions released December 10. A non-refundable program deposit of $500 is required by January 10. A wait list of qualified applicants will be created for the Gap Semester Program.

Students not admitted to the program will automatically be considered for general freshman admission with a decision released March 15. Students may not apply to both the Gap Semester Program and to the university through the Early Decision or Early Action periods.

How much does it cost?Program costs will be the same as Elon tuition, fees, room and board for fall semester. Students will be considered enrolled at the university and eligible for any financial aid for which they qualify. Students will automatically be considered for the Presidential Scholarship or the Elon Engagement Scholarship; however, Gap students may not be Fellows due to the academic requirements of the Fellows Programs. Elon Engagement ScholarshipsJust imagine all that you can do during

Every freshman applicant will be a

candidate for this $3,500 scholarship, which

recipient will be given a one-time $2,000

grant to be used for an approved Elon

AthleticsElon is Division I, Southern Conference

and scholarships are awarded in all sports

by the Department of Intercollegiate

Athletics in compliance with all

official NCAA and university rules and

regulations. Awards are performance-

based and amounts vary.

ROTCThe U.S. Army and Air Force offer three- and

four-year scholarships based on merit, not

financial need. In addition, Elon provides all

ROTC scholarship winners free room and

board during the time the ROTC scholarship

pays tuition. For more information, contact

recruiter directly.

And if you’re from North Carolina…

There are a number of special grants and

scholarships just for you, starting with $1,850*

from the N.C. Legislative Tuition Grant.

You have to be a resident and a full-time

undergraduate student, but that’s about all it

takes to receive this significant grant each of

your four years at Elon. Students enrolled at

least half-time will receive a prorated amount.

North Carolina Teaching FellowsStudents who are selected as N.C. Teaching

Fellows and choose Elon receive $13,000

in scholarships from Elon and the state

of North Carolina, the N.C. Legislative

Tuition Grant, plus airfare for one

semester in London or Costa Rica.

Applications are available in high schools

and are due in late October.

The Watson and Odyssey ProgramsNorth Carolina students with significant

financial need are eligible for scholarships

in the Watson and Odyssey Programs, two

mentoring and support programs designed

to help students be successful at Elon.

The Watson and Odyssey Application is

required and due February 10. Paper copies

are available or you may apply online at

The Leon and Lorraine Watson Program

Eighteen scholarships are awarded each

year in the Watson Program – 8 Watson

scholarships and 10 Elon Commitment

scholarships. Selected students who have

academic promise and documented high

financial need receive scholarships of

$21,000 annually and in combination with

other aid, should have funding to meet up

to the full cost of tuition, fees, room and

board. All students also receive a one-

time $4,000 study abroad grant to fund an

approved international experience.

The Odyssey Program

The Odyssey Program is home to many

different donor-endowed scholarships

designated for students with high

financial need, including The Honorable

Thad Eure North Carolina Achievement

Scholarship. The scholarship is available

only to students from 13 counties in the

Piedmont region of North Carolina, as well

as Mr. Eure’s home county, Gates County.

Three $12,000 scholarships are awarded

annually to incoming freshmen. Students

also receive one $4,000 Elon Experiences

grant in addition to other program

benefits. The Watson and Odyssey

Application is required and must be

submitted by February 10.

College is the investment for a lifetime, and

at Elon more than 70 percent of our students

receive assistance with that investment in the

form of financial aid. That’s good news for the

bottom line, which is really the only important

factor in the cost of college. So, what’s your

bottom line for the cost of an Elon education?

You must consider all the factors. Here are

some of the options:

Need-based assistanceFor students who qualify for need-based

assistance, Elon offers a full range of federal,

state and institutional grants, loans and

scholarships. The amount of federal aid you

are qualified to receive will be determined from

the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA). Institutional financial aid eligibility is

based upon additional information collected

on the CSS PROFILE. We recommend starting

early so that your aid file is complete by mid-

March. That way you will receive notification

of your aid eligibility in plenty of time to make

your final decision.

The Odyssey Program

A number of need-based endowed scholarships

in the Odyssey Program are available to out-

of-state freshmen through the Watson and

Odyssey Application, due February 10. You should

complete this application even if you have not

received an admissions decision or completed

all of the standard financial aid forms. Better

to be ready than too late! Full details about the

scholarships, award amounts and the application

Non-need based loansThere are financial resources for students and

families who do not qualify for need-based

assistance. Elon participates in several of

these loan programs. Check with the Office of

You will be issued an official username

and password for application information

on Elon’s OnTrack system. Create a file

where you can save this information for

require a credit card for submission. College

Board fee waivers are also honored online.

Elon’s fee waiver verification process. All

information is secure. Paper applications

Admissions policy

Admission to Elon is competitive. More than

9,000 applications are received for the 1,400

available openings in the freshman class.

The most important factors in the admission

decision are the academic record, including

the courses taken and the grades attained,

followed by SAT or ACT scores and the

essay. Other factors that may be considered

include leadership potential, extracurricular

and service-related activities, special

talents, relationship with the university

and ability to contribute positively to the

campus community. A campus visit is highly

recommended. Individual appointments

may be scheduled if desired, but will not be

used formally in the admission decision.

Applicants are encouraged to pursue a

rigorous program of study including the

following distribution of courses:

English .........................................4 units required

Math ..............................................3 units required,

4 recommended

(Algebra I & II and Geometry are required.)

Science ........................................3 or more units,

including at least one lab science

Social Studies ..........................3 or more units,

including U.S. History for U.S. residents

Early Decision – this is a traditional,

binding application commitment. Students

may only apply to one school early

decision, and if admitted, agree to withdraw

applications from all other colleges. Parents

and student must sign the Early Decision

Agreement on the application. A non-

refundable U.S. $500 enrollment deposit is

required by January 10 for accepted Early

Decision students.

Early Action – this is a non-binding

decision period for students who have

high interest in Elon and would like an

early answer on their application. Students

admitted Early Action have until May 1 to

pay the U.S. $500 enrollment deposit.

Final Application Deadline andFellows Application Deadline – this

deadline is also non-binding and admitted

students have until May 1 to pay the U.S.

$500 enrollment deposit. The Fellows

application is a separate application, also

due January 10. Students selected for the

Gap Semester ProgramBeginning fall 2012 Elon will offer the

Gap Semester Program for high school

graduates who wish to enter Elon through

an alternative educational option. The

program offers international, leadership

and service opportunities with a reduced

course load in an off- campus environment.

Designed and administered by the university,

the program will provide students an

opportunity for personal growth through

a three-week leadership program led by

the National Outdoor Leadership School

(NOLS), a four-week service experience,

and a six-week international study term

in Costa Rica. Students will return to Elon

for January Winter Term and the spring

semester for traditional first-year studies.

Fifteen students will be selected for the pilot

program. Students apply through the regular

freshman application process; the application

is due November 1 and students are notified

December 10. The U.S. $500 enrollment

deposit is non-refundable and due January

10. Students who are not selected for the Gap

Semester Program will be considered for

regular freshman admission and notified of a

decision March 15.

Official High School Transcripts and Counselor Evaluation Forms

This information must be submitted by your

high school or secondary school.

International students must include an

official certified English translation of your

complete academic record documenting

your secondary school studies, including

mark sheets and examination certificates.

Standardized TestsElon will accept SAT or ACT scores, and a

writing section score must be submitted.

Submit scores from all tests taken. Only

the highest scores will be considered in

the admissions decision. Make sure you

plan to take either the SAT or ACT October

or November of your senior year to meet

application deadlines.
