A new year provides a
perfect opportunity to turn over a new leaf, and many people commit to doing so by making New Year’s reso-lutions.
While there are no rules governing resolutions, certain resolutions tend to top the list of the most common year after year. Setting health and fitness goals are very common, but so are resolutions to switch careers. In fact, a 2017 survey from YouGov found that 14 percent of respondents were commit-ted to finding a new job in 2018.
Building a strong profes-sional network can help people find a fulfilling job when they are looking to advance their careers. The following tips can help pro-fessionals establish such a network.
• Recognize networking is a two-way street. Net-working can be an effec-tive way to find a new job, and it’s also a great way to help other people do the same. While you’re looking for a new job, if you come across opportunities that aren’t a good fit for you but might be for someone in your network, don’t hes-itate to contact them. Your efforts will be appreciated, and those you help might
do the same for you if they
come across job openings that suit your background.
• Build your online pro-file. LinkedIn, a social me-dia site for professionals, is a go-to resource for human resources officials, and it’s also a valuable way to stay connected with profes-sional acquaintances. Ca-reer services professionals advise adding anyone you have worked with to your LinkedIn network. Con-tinue building your profile as your network grows and you work with more people. When others invite you to join their network, accept those invitations.
• Update your résumé.
Update your résumé as of-ten as you deem necessary. Colleagues you’ve worked with in the past who are within your LinkedIn net-work may periodically view your profile, and an updat-ed résumé is a great way to keep them abreast of how your career is going. If they can see what you’ve ac-complished since you last worked with them, they might be more inclined to reconnect or recommend you for a job opening.
• Stay in touch. Profes-sional networks are most effective for professionals who keep in touch with their colleagues and ac-quaintances. Follow up with colleagues you’ve worked with in the past to see if there’s anything you can do for them or to check in on how a project you discussed with them is going. Staying in touch can shed light on job opportu-nities or open other doors that might facilitate your job search.
A strong professional network can help profes-sionals advance their ca-reers and help others look-ing to do the same.

Many adults may recall being bullied or witnessing bullying when they were in school. Despite that, it’s important that adults, includ-ing parents and educators, not see bullying as an inevi-table part of growing up. The effects of bullying can be
severe, affecting those involved — including the bul-lied, the bullies and those who merely witness bullying — long after their school days have ended.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, bullying has
been linked to various nega-tive outcomes, mental health issues, substance abuse and suicide.
When taking steps to com-bat bullying, parents and educators should not over-look the benefits of enlisting children in their efforts. Kids
can be great allies in the fight against bullying, and the fol-lowing are some ways adults can work with youngsters who want to stop bullying.
Teaching kids To respecT oThers
StopBullying.gov, the DHHS’ website devoted to stopping bullying once and for all, notes the importance of teaching kids to treat everyone, including other children, with respect. Par-ents can teach kids to pause before saying or doing some-thing that can be harmful to someone else. Bullying inflicts physical and emotional pain on its victims, so teaching kids to recognize that words can be just as harmful as fists may encourage them to think twice before saying some-thing mean to a classmate.
The DHHS also recom-mends advising children to do something else if they feel an urge to say or do some-thing mean. Walk away from a situation to watch televi-sion, play a video game or engage in another activity rather than saying or doing something hurtful.
WhaT kids being bul-lied can do
Kids being bullied also can employ certain strategies to overcome bullying. The DHHS recommends teaching chil-dren to look at bullies and telling them to stop in a calm, clear voice. Laughing it off might also work for kids who find joking comes naturally to them. The DHHS advises against fighting back, instead suggesting kids walk away and stay away before finding an adult who can stop the bullying on the spot.
Encouraging students to confide in adults they trust also can help them overcome bullying and the feelings of loneliness that bullying can elicit. Trusted adults can help children devise a plan to stop the bullying. The DHHS notes that most bullying happens when adults are not around,
so staying near adults and other children can help kids avoid situations where they might be vulnerable to bul-lies.WhaT WiTnesses To bul-
lying can doBullying can have a nega-
tive impact on children who witness bullying, even if they aren’t the victims. Adults can encourage children to speak to trusted adults and to report instances of bullying. In addition, children should be encouraged to be kind to children who are being bul-lied, inviting them to sit with them on the bus or in the lunch room and engaging them in conversations about topics that interest them.
Bullying affects children whether they’re being bul-lied, doing the bullying or witnessing it. But bullying can be overcome if adults and children work together and
keep lines of communication open at all times.

When chilly weather arrives and the days get shorter, chances are good you’ll spend the majority of your days indoors. Before you start your hibernation, it’s a good idea to ensure your
home is up to the task. Put your well-being at the top of the list with these ideas to help ensure a health-conscious home that’s ready for the dark days of winter.
Encourage better air qualityWhen the house is closed up tight to keep out the cold, you may be trapping in some undesirable air pollutants. a well-sealed house may not have the best circulation, and that’s the ideal environment for dust mites and other allergens to accumulate.
A thorough cleaning is the first step toward better air quality. Do a deep vacuuming of all carpets, including under furniture and around baseboards. Be sure to launder linens that aren’t typically part of your regular washing routine, like window treatments and comforters.
you may want to consult a heating and cooling specialist to determine whether your ductwork is due for a cleaning. especially if your system didn’t get much use through the summer months, there may be a fair bit of dust just waiting to infiltrate your home once the furnace begins to blow.
Be sure to change filters, clean vents and air returns and, if necessary, consider adding an air purifier that helps filter any remaining particles for the best quality air. When opening windows isn’t comfortable during cold winter weather, letting the sunshine in can still help to improve indoor air quality. a study by the university of Oregon’s Biology and the Built environment Center showed rooms with increased sunlight have fewer viable bacteria.
“until now, daylighting design has been primarily about visual comfort or circadian health, but now we can say daylighting influences air quality,” said Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg, co-director of the BioBe Center and co-author of the study.
Let in lightNatural light plays an important role in overall health, and reduced daylight in the winter months can have a big impact on productivity and sleep, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Velux. For example, nearly two-thirds of respondents said they believe daylight affects their productivity and mood. light is also an important cue to the body’s circadian clock, and proper exposure to natural light during the day can help support better sleep when darkness falls.
What’s more, sunlight is a natural antidepressant, and there is ample scientific evidence that associates daylight with better health and quality of life, such as improved mood, less fatigue and reduced eyestrain.
it may be tempting to keep the drapes closed when it’s blustery outside to ward off a draft, but with well-sealed windows, there’s no reason to block that all-important natural light. in rooms with ample natural light available, take advantage, especially in the morning when exposure to daylight can benefit your circadian rhythm.
However, not every room is situated to maximize your access to natural light, and that’s when you can get creative. One solution is skylights, which add natural light to virtually any space. an option like a sun tunnel skylight offered by Velux Skylights lends brightness to even the smallest spaces, like a bathroom or hallway. For a larger room, a fresh-air skylight can help address air quality concerns, and some models offer smartphone connectivity to open and close the skylight and even raise or lower blinds with a few quick taps of the finger. Learn more at whyskylights.com.
Keep out the coldas a child, you were probably warned to bundle up in cooler weather to avoid catching a cold. as an adult, you likely realize that germs, not temperatures, cause illness. However, there is some truth to the old wives’ tales associating cold with getting sick. The viruses that cause colds and the flu thrive in cooler temperatures, for example. This means that, at least indirectly, a cold environment may indeed make you sick.
to ward off a chill in your home, safeguard against drafts around windows and doors. If seasonal weather-proofing is impractical, consider temporary solutions like draft stoppers or mats you can place at the base of doors. add insulation, if needed, in areas that commonly release a significant amount of heat, such as the attic and garage.
as the days become shorter and colder, the importance of getting enough daylight is even more acute to sleep patterns, mood and productivity. these tips can help you get a better night sleep:n Increase your exposure to natural light during the
day. take a lunchtime walk at work or, if you can’t get outside, sit by a window while you eat.
n install blackout curtains in your bedroom to block light from street lamps and the moon.
n turn your thermostat down in the evenings to create a cooler bedroom to sleep in.
n Establish a good bedtime routine. For example, read a book instead of spending more time looking at a screen. Blue light from electronic devices mimics daylight and can trick your brain into staying alert.
n use red or orange bulbs in kids’ night lights as these are some of the least disruptive to sleep.

Many homeowners wish for expansive kitchens. Modernized kitchens that include sought after fea-tures and showcase the lat-est trends go a long way to improving the overall value of a home.
As desirable as such kitch-ens may be, some homes simply don’t have enough space for a centerfold-wor-thy kitchen featuring an is-land, wine refrigerator and walk-in pantry. However, homeowners with small kitchens can still improve the form and function of their existing spaces.
reconfigure and re-vamp cabineTry
Homeowners whose kitchens are small often la-ment their lack of storage. Redesigning the layout of cabinets, and possibly add-ing some more cabinetry, may take care of certain storage issues. The experts at Merit Kitchens suggest utilizing corner space with LeMans units, lazy susans and other gadgets to make access to these areas easi-er. Going vertical with wall cabinets that extend to the ceiling also can add more storage, as can roll-in work carts.Work WiTh The Walls
Small kitchens require
clever usage of vertical space. Vertical storage units, hooks, shelving, and more can move items out of drawers and off of counters. Consider an under-the-cabinet toaster oven and microwave to create more counter space.
Use scaled-down appliances
Shop with size in mind when looking at new ap-pliances if you have a small kitchen. Compact versions won’t take up as much space as larger alterna-tives. Homeowners should consider the ultimate func-tion of the kitchen and then think about which appliances will serve them well. Homeowners with small kitchens may not need a large stand mixer or an oversized commercial stove.
add some glassThe DIY Network recom-
mends incorporating glass to improve the perception of space in small kitchens. Glass lets you see through the objects, thereby en-hancing the feeling of spa-ciousness or what designers call “negative space.” Glass also can be reflective, visu-ally expanding the space.
embrace high-end maTerials
It costs less to renovate small spaces than bigger areas, so homeowners may be able to afford high-end materials that really add personality to a kitchen. Flooring, counter materials and quality fixtures can re-ally set small kitchens apart.
Small kitchens can be cu-linary havens with the right improvements to maximize the space.
Few things beat a hot meal on a cold day. Stews
and casseroles can fit the bill in such situations, but
soup is a go-to solution when looking to warm up.
This recipe for “Tortilla Soup” from “The Complete Mexican, South American & Caribbean Cookbook” by Jane Milton, Jenni Fleet-wood and Marina Filippelli (Metro Books) can be served as an appetizer or light meal. The crispy torti-lla strips included in the recipe add extra texture to a delicious dish.
TorTilla soupServes 44 corn tortillas,
freshly made or a few days old
1 tablespoon vege-table oil, plus extra for fry-ing
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 14-ounce can plum tomatoes, drained
4 cups chicken stock
Small bunch cilantro Salt and ground black
pepper
Using a sharp knife, cut each tortilla into 4 or 5 strips, each measuring about 3⁄4 inches wide.
Pour vegetable oil to a depth of 3⁄4 inch into a heavy frying pan. Heat until a small piece of tortilla, added to the oil, floats on the top and bubbles at the edges.
Add a few tortilla strips to the hot oil and fry for a few minutes, until crisp and golden brown all over, turning them occasionally. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a dou-ble layer of paper towels. Cook the remaining tortilla strips in the same way.
Heat the 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large, heavy pan. Add the chopped onion and garlic
and cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spatula, until the onion is soft and translu-cent. Do not let the garlic turn brown or it will give the soup a bitter taste.
Chop the tomatoes using a large, sharp knife and add them to the onion mixture in the pan. Pour in the chicken stock and stir well. Bring to a boil, then lower
the heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes, until the liquid has reduced slightly.
Chop the cilantro. Add to the soup, reserving a little to use as a garnish. Season to taste.
Place a few of the crisp tortilla pieces in the bot-tom of four warmed soup bowls. Ladle the soup on top. Sprinkle each portion with the reserved chopped cilantro and serve.

In a perfect world, all vehicle owners would be able to park their cars and trucks in garages. In such a world, automobiles would not be vulnerable to sun, storms and other natural elements that, over time, can contribute to wear and tear.
But many drivers cannot or choose not to park their cars in garages. Some are content to let their vehicles brave the ele-ments, while others look for ways to pro-tect their cars and trucks as much as possi-ble. Drivers who count themselves among the latter group can take these simple steps to protect their cars and trucks from whatever Mother Nature has in store for them.
• Park in the shade. Parking in the shade can protect both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Shaded areas protect uphol-stery and dashboards inside the car from sun-induced fading, while also limiting the damage sun can cause to exterior paint. Faded paint may hurt the resale value of a vehicle, prompting prospective buyers to walk away or at least wonder if a vehicle with a faded exterior was well maintained.
• Wash and wax. Washing and waxing a vehicle helps to minimize damage that’s inevitable regardless of where drivers park their cars. Dirt and debris litter roadways, and over time cars can collect a large amount of these unwanted stowaways. If
dirt and debris are not removed, they can cause long-term damage to vehicle exteri-ors. Washing and waxing a car can ensure its exterior looks good and reduce the like-lihood of rust and other corrosion from oc-curring.
• Don’t write off bird droppings. Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic and, if left to their unsightly devices, can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint. Tree sap is an equally formidable foe, poten-tially causing scratching because it can be very difficult to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help driv-ers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles.
• Employ a car cover. Drivers who have garages but use them to store things oth-er than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways. Covers protect cars from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed.
Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protect-ing automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages.

(Family Features) If you're looking for a memorable vacation experience, get-ting behind the wheel and taking to the open road can provide the perfect oppor-tunity to create your own journey and explore at your own pace.
When planning a road trip, the first step is choos-ing where your travels will take you. A destination like New Mexico, known as the Land of Enchantment, is a haven for the unexpected and offers a variety of bud-get-friendly activities that can inspire creativity and rejuvenate your body and mind.
Before you jump in the car and set off to make memories, there are a few things to consider when building your trip's itinerary, such as climate, lodging, restaurants, activities and your budget.
WeaTherDue to its mild climate
and abundant sunshine, New Mexico beckons trav-elers year-round. With low humidity, minimal rainfall and temperatures ranging from the high 50s to low 80s during the fall months plus highs in the 50s during win-ter, visitors are almost al-ways able to enjoy outdoor events and activities during their trips.
lodgingWhen looking for a place
to stay, New Mexico is home to many one-of-a-kind inns and hotels. For example, Ho-tel Santa Fe is wholly native-owned by the Picuris Pueblo Indian tribe and features private butlers along with amenities and furnishings with the authentic flavor of the region. Other unique lodging options include Ho-tel Luna Mystica in Taos, a chic vintage inn made up of trailers from the '50s and '60s with dramatic views of the Rocky Mountains.
food and drinksExploring new places can
be a perfect opportunity (or excuse) to indulge in exqui-site foods you may not be able to find anywhere else.
For example, Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm is set among 25 acres of lavender fields and lush gardens where you can en-joy artisan, hand-crafted cocktails and a true farm-to-fork dinner featuring sea-sonal ingredients at CAM-PO. Visit the Farm Shop for handmade lavender prod-ucts, as well as handmade jewelry and salts, snacks and other seasonings.
relaxaTionRoad trips are all about
hitting the reset button and finding a happy place. Take a step back and soothe your body, mind and spirit with activities such as a private soak at Ojo Caliente. Many generations of Pueblo In-dians have sworn to the healing powers of these hot springs, the only location in the world with four dif-ferent types of sulfur-free pools. The full-service spa also offers soothing and re-storative treatments includ-ing massages, reflexology and hydrating skin and body treatments.
shoppingNo trip is complete with-
out souvenirs to remember the adventure and gifts for loved ones back home. Con-sider stopping at the historic Santa Fe Plaza, where you can find a wide array of bou-tique shops and the Palace of the Governors market, where top artisans from local tribes offer one-of-a-kind handcrafted treasures such as art, furniture, Native American pottery, clothing and collectibles.
