    Elevating Health Care.

TogetherIn December 2009, Glendora residentMike Starr suddenly elt his heartrace. When it didnt go away, his wieSharon drove him to the EmergencyRoom (ER) at Foothill Presbyterian

Hospital, part o the Citrus ValleyHealth Partners (CVHP) system.

There, sta connected the 66-year-old business owner to a cardiacmonitor and discovered his heartrate was a dangerously ast 230beats per minute. ER doctors tookimmediate action, using a debrillatorto successully shock Mikes heartback into normal rhythmsavinghis lie in the process. Mike was

quickly stabilized and admitted tothe Intensive Care Unit (ICU) orobservation.

Heart of the MissionAlthough Mike was out o danger orthe moment, his doctors wanted tomake sure they could prevent anotherlie-threatening episode. Fortunatelyor Mike, expert cardiac care wasavailable close by at Citrus ValleyMedical CenterInter-Community

Campus in Covina, one o severalCVHP acilities. The ollowingmorning, Mike was transerred to theCitrus Valley Heart Center at Inter-Community hospital or angioplastya surgical procedure used to widen ablocked or narrowed artery. Together, the team determined Mike neededa special device called an AICD(Automated Implantable Cardioverter

Debrillator) that automaticallymonitors and treats abnormal heartrhythms. Mike had the AICD implantedin his chest and hasnt had anotherheart-racing episode sincethanks

to the expertise and teamwork o theCVHP system. The whole processwent very smoothly at both hospitals,

Mike says. When I was transerred toInter-Community, they were all readyand waiting or me. Everyone knewexactly what they were doing. It gaveme a lot o condence that I had cometo the right place.

Mikes experience goes to the hearto the CVHP mission. Each o ouracilities has its own unique strengthsand centers o excellence, saysCVHP President and CEO Robert H.Curry. And because we are part othe same system amily, our patientshave access to all o these specializedservices close to home.

The CVHP system includes threehospitalsFoothill PresbyterianHospital in Glendora, Citrus ValleyMedical CenterInter-CommunityCampus in Covina, and Citrus Valley

Having another baby was the last thingon 43-year-old Jovita Toribios mind. She and her husband already had twoadult childrena daughter, 28, anda son almost 20. And shed recentlybeen diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which meant that pregnancy would

present special challenges. Whenmy ob-gyn explained the risks, I wasworried about what could go wrong, she says.

Diabetes that isnt well controlledcan aect the health o both motherand baby, explains Ann Kuns, RN,who coordinates the OutpatientDiabetes Education Program at FoothillPresbyterian Hospital and CitrusValley Medical CenterQueen o the

Valley Campus. Our main concernsare miscarriage, preterm birth, birthdeects and macrosomia, which meansthe baby grows too large. A big babymakes vaginal delivery dicult andincreases the risk o birth injuries.

Preventing ProblemsMoms-to-be can developcomplications, too, including lie-threatening high blood pressure. Butmost problems can be prevented by

maintaining near-normal blood sugarlevels throughout pregnancy. Thatswhere a program called Sweet Successcomes in. Sweet Success provideseducation and support or womenwho have existing diabetes or developit while pregnant (gestational diabetes).

The program is staed by an expertteam o diabetes nurse educators, dietitians and counselors who arebilingual in Spanish and English. These caring proessionals oerclasses, support groups, one-on-onecounseling and phone consultations

to help guide women through eachstage o pregnancy.

Jovita says that Sweet Success changeher lie. The program was the bestthing that ever happened to me.Beore that, I wasnt taking care omysel. Once I was in Sweet Success,I started eating right and exercising agot my blood sugar under control.

Sweet Success BabiesJovita managed her diabetes so wellthat she actually lost 25 pounds durinher pregnancy. Her daughter, Ariana, was born in perect health.

Ann says that Ariana is just one omany perect Sweet Success babies.Less than 5 percent o our newbornhave any problems. And our momshave ewer pregnancy complicationsthan women who dont have diabete

roboticsurgeryIn the all o 2009, a routine exam revealed ourlumps in Juan Flores prostate gland. Although his

doctor recommended an immediate biopsy, Juanhesitated. I knew there were risks, he says. And rankly, I didnt want to know the results.

When two o the lumps turned out to bemalignant, the West Covina resident again tookhis time, careully weighing the options beoredeciding on a treatment.

Robotic SurgeryWhen Juan nally underwent surgery inJanuary 2010 to remove his prostate gland,

a groundbreaking technology was availableat Citrus Valley Medical CenterQueen othe Valley Campus. The hospital had recentlyacquired the most advanced version o theda Vinci surgical robot.

A robot doesnt replace the surgeon, urologistSung Choe, MD, explains. Instead, it allowssurgeons to operate with ar more precision, maneuverability and control, especially in hard-to-reach areas like the pelvis.

Rather than perorming the surgery manually, the surgeon guides the operation rom a consolenear the operating table. The surgeons handmovements are transmitted to robotic armsholding extremely precise and fexible surgicalinstruments. Throughout the procedure, aspecial camera provides a highly magnied,three-dimensional view inside the patients body.Dr. Choe says that minimally invasive roboticprocedures provide many benets. Patients lose

less blood, have a shorter hospital stayusuallyless than 24 hoursand recover ar more quickly

than ater traditional surgery. For most men, continence returns sooner, too.

Juan was no exception. I had absolutecondence that the surgery would beimpeccable, and it was. I cant say enoughabout the care I received rom Dr. Choe and thehospital sta. Everyone was so compassionateand attentive that I elt like a guest in a suite ata ve-star hotel.

In addition to prostatectomies, surgeons at

Queen o the Valley perorm hysterectomiesand other general surgical procedures usingthe da Vinci robot.

Leading-Edge TechnologyDr. Choe is passionate about the da Vinci system.I eel privileged to be working in a time whenthis revolutionary technology is available. And Imespecially grateul that were able to oer it toour community.

With cancer behind him, Juan has resumed his

normal lie. He has also made contributions tothe Citrus Valley Health Foundation. Its my wayo saying thank you, he says.

To learn more about the da Vinci surgicalrobot at Queen o the Valley or other CitrusValley Health Partners acilities and services, visitwww.cvhp.org, or call the Doctor Connection ora physician reerral at 1-888-456-CVHP (2847).
