Course Description: Divisibility, prime numbers, congruences, Euler’sfunction, the group of units, quadratic residues, sums of squares, and Dio-phantie equations.

Prerequisite: Math 345 with C or better or consent.

Textbook: Elementary Number Theory by Gareth A. Jones and J. MaryJones, Springer.

Course Format: I will give lectures on chapters 1–7 and 10–11 of thetextbook, introducing additional material on quadratic fields and partitionsof integers as time permits. I will work through many of the homeworkproblems in class, and assign others as homework. Grades for undergraduatestudents will be based entirely on homework. Grades for graduate studentswill be based on both homework and a final project. The determination ofgrades will be based on a standard scale (90% – 100% for an A, 90% – 89%for a B, etc.)

How to Study for this Class: Read the textbook carefully and take notesin class as needed. Write up the homework exercises thoroughly.
