Natural Science Year 6 – Unit 8: Electricity and magnetism Electricity and magnetism Electricity and magnetism are two different phenomena that are present in nature. Electricity is the flow of charged particles, and magnetism is the force of attraction or repulsion between objects. In the past, scientists were aware of electricity and magnetism. However, it was not until the 19th century that they realised there was a close relationship between these two things. They also discovered that it was possible to create a magnetic field using an electrical current. The interaction of these forces is called electromagnetism. What are electromagnets? What is electricity? Electricity is an essential part of our daily lives. We use electricity for almost everything we do, whether it's turning on the lights in our house, playing our favourite video game, or even blow drying our hair. Did you ever stop to think about where this electricity comes from or how does it work? To understand this, we need to know about atoms and their structure. Electrical charges Electricity is a form of energy. Electricity begins with the smallest of all particles, the atom. Atoms, although too small for our eyes to see, are in everything. Atoms also contain protons and neutrons in their nucleus (the centre of the atom). Electrons are contained around the protons and neutrons, and move quickly around them. This quick movement is what makes the energy in electricity. If an object has the same number of protons and electrons, it is electrically neutral. However, sometimes, electrons move easily from one object to another and this makes the object electrically charged. 1. Both objects are electrically neutral. 2. We rub the pen against the cloth. 3. The pen is positively charged and the cloth is negatively charged. Forces between electrical charges Electrically charged object attract or repel each other, depending on their charges.
