ElectricityandmagnetismElectricityandmagnetismaretwodifferentphenomenathatarepresentinnature.Electricityistheflowofchargedparticles,andmagnetismistheforceofattractionorrepulsionbetweenobjects.Inthepast,scientistswereawareofelectricityandmagnetism.However,itwasnotuntilthe19thcenturythattheyrealisedtherewasacloserelationshipbetweenthesetwothings.Theyalsodiscoveredthatitwaspossibletocreateamagneticfieldusinganelectricalcurrent.Theinteractionoftheseforcesiscalledelectromagnetism.Whatareelectromagnets?
Whatiselectricity?Electricityisanessentialpartofourdailylives.Weuseelectricityforalmosteverythingwedo,whetherit'sturningonthelightsinourhouse,playingourfavouritevideogame,orevenblowdryingourhair.Didyoueverstoptothinkaboutwherethiselectricitycomesfromorhowdoesitwork?Tounderstandthis,weneedtoknowaboutatomsandtheirstructure.
ElectricalchargesElectricityisaformofenergy.Electricitybeginswiththesmallestofallparticles,theatom.Atoms,althoughtoosmallforoureyestosee,areineverything.Atomsalsocontainprotonsandneutronsintheirnucleus(thecentreoftheatom).Electronsarecontainedaroundtheprotonsandneutrons,andmovequicklyaroundthem.Thisquickmovementiswhatmakestheenergyinelectricity.Ifanobjecthasthesamenumberofprotonsandelectrons,itiselectricallyneutral.However,sometimes,electronsmoveeasilyfromoneobjecttoanotherandthismakestheobjectelectricallycharged.
