“The tours and archae-ology sessions offer a really unique opportunity for visitors to get right up to the trench edge and potentially see and even handle historical discoveries as they are unearthed.”

Professor Chris Gerrard from Dept of Archaeol-ogy at Durham University said: “It’s great to work alongside The Auckland Project and we are excited to see what the next three weeks will bring.”

To mark the end of the excavation, on Saturday, 23rd June, visitors can step inside historic Auck-land Castle on a Behind

the Scenes Tour to take a peek at the work under way to return the prop-erty to its former Geor-gian Gothic splendour, as designed by renowned English architect James Wyatt.

Booking is recom-mended to take part in the weekend archaeology sessions. To book a place email [email protected].

For those unable to visit Auckland Castle during the excavations, an online Durham University Auck-land Castle Excavation blog has been launched.

ASPIRING ARCHAEOLO-GISTS of all ages can step back through the centu-ries on a summertime search Auckland Castle.

Excavations are taking place throughout June to reveal the footprint of the medieval castle now bur-ied beneath the lawns.

Running in partnership between The Auckland Project and Durham Uni-versity, the dig will reveal how the castle’s buildings were arranged and give a fantastic insight into day-to-day lives of its medie-val inhabitants.

Informal on-site tours of the dig will be running on a drop-in basis, Monday to Friday from the 4th to 23rd June, offering the

chance to see inside the excavation trenches and watch archaeologists peel back the centuries at the former home of the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham.

Weekend family archae-ology sessions will also take place at 11am and 1pm on the 16th, 17th and 23rd June, giving visitors the opportunity to handle archaeological finds.

John Castling, Commu-nity Archivist at The Auck-land Project said: “The findings from this excava-tion could be of great sig-nificance for the medieval archaeology of the region, and for our understanding of the lives of those in the household of the Prince

BLOOMTALK GARDEN OF THE YEARMike and Ann Thornton’s garden, on the outskirts of Coundon, pays homage to the couple’s interests, including climbing and ceramics. Photo: Tam Mayor.

www.bloomtalk.org.ukSINCE 1982, owners Mike and Ann Thornton’s garden has undergone many incarnations before gradually maturing into the relaxing plant-filled space that it is today.

Welcome to our second garden selected for Bloomtalk’s Garden of the Year, situated on the outskirts of Coun-don and nominated by Coundon resident, Lionel Ames.

“These are perfect gardens to relax and listen to wildlife communicating with each other; truly a little piece of heaven right on one’s doorstep,” said Lionel.

Hard landscaping plays an important role providing a rich variety of textures from the hewn stone paving interspersed with cobbles and gravel, to the vertical structural elements bringing height and colour.

There’s the perfectly aligned ‘compass’ stone in the patio and the occasional stylised cairns that more than hint at Mike’s interest in climbing; elsewhere Ann’s passion for ceramics can be seen in the shape of a bold deep blue coni-cal focal point, or the organic creations slowly being absorbed and softened into the planting. Acers are one of the star attractions here with their shapes and filigree foliage providing both structure and colour in the garden.

Mike explained: “The show of leaves

at different times of the year makes them prob-ably my favourite element of the garden. Their autumn colour is especially good.”

The huge flowers of Clematis ‘Nelly Moser’ hug the walls of the cottage, and heuchera, hel-lebores and herbs bring colour and scent to the borders.

As the garden starts to melt into the surround-ing woodland, there is a circular bed containing two young monkey puzzles and a maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba – one of the oldest trees on earth – native to China and dating back to the Jurassic period).

Elsewhere the understory is planted with ferns, geraniums, rhododendrons and hostas which thrive in the shade. Dogwood, Cornus alba, has also been used and its bright red stems will glow through the winter.

A neatly formed vegetable patch is home to onions, leeks, cabbages, cauliflowers, beans, sal-ads and soft fruits.

There are also pear and apple trees that

have been trained over metal archways – the inspiration for which came from a family visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey in Cornwall.

The couple have created a handbook filled with photographs capturing everything from the heavy winter snows – and snowmen – through to the autumnal bounty of redcurrants, rosehips and fallen leaves.

It is a personal journey through the garden’s year and reminds us to remember to stand and stare: “This garden is not just a one night stand, it changes during every part of the year and there’s always something different to see,” said Mike.

“I would encourage anybody to take photo-graphs throughout the year in their garden to appreciate and enjoy these changes.”

Bloomtalk’s Garden of the Year is supported by the Bishop Press and Bishop and Coundon in Bloom. For more stunning photos of the gardens, visit www.bloomtalk.org.uk.

As one of hundreds of events taking place throughout the country, whilst the Bishop Auck-land event will feature representation from the armed forces and Cadet groups, there is also a strong focus on providing a variety of displays and facilities that will appeal to all.

Including craft displays, a model railway layout by Bishop Trains, stands representing Durham AFC and Network Rail, and dis-play by the Auckland Rail-ways Group.

Hot and cold refresh-ments are available. and for the “young at heart” there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, ice cream, candy floss, plus many other attractions.

A free classic Eden bus service will operate on the day, running between the station and the venue.

It has also been con-firmed the event will be attended by David Brad-ley, who famously played the lead character, Billy Caspar, in the iconic Brit-ish film Kes.

The acclaimed film, directed by Ken Loach, whose most recent film was I, Daniel Blake, is based on the Barry Hines book A Kestrel for a Knave, which has been adopted as a standard school text.

David has a strong personal attachment to the initiative and has kindly agreed to attend in response to a serving RAF invitation.

It is hoped that the event will establish itself on the local calender for the end of June each year, as it will provide an excel-lent opportunity for the local community to come together in support of a most worthy cause.

IN COMMEMORATION of the 10th anniversary of Armed Forces Day, a community event is being staged at the Newgate Shopping Centre between 10.30am and 4pm on Sat-urday 30th June.

With its roots in the establishment of a Vet-erans Day in 2006, the event was changed to Armed Forces Day in 2009, to commemorate the service of all men and women involved in the British armed forces com-munity, including serving personnel, reserves, vet-erans, cadets and their families.

The event, a “first for the town”, will follow a service to open a Remembrance Garden adjacent Albert Hill, and is the result of a close collaboration between the Forces Sup-port charity and the Auck-land Railways Group. Sup-ported by serving armed forces personnel, and committed members of the local community.

The sponsoring charity, Forces Support, have a permanent presence in the Newgate Shopping Centre and are committed to supporting bereaved forces personnel and their families in variety of emotional and practical ways.

PC Nicholson, of South Durham CID, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a man who already suffers from confidence issues and rarely goes out of the house.

The 24-year-old victim needed surgery after being assaulted in Bishop Auckland on Saturday 9th June.

Police are now appeal-ing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on Watling Road at around 6pm.

The victim, who is par-tially blind in one eye and suffers mild learning diffi-culties, was walking along the road with a friend when the incident hap-pened.

When they were close to Auckland Medical Centre, a man who was a passen-ger in a car got out and punched the victim once in the side of the face, leaving him with a frac-tured jaw which required surgery.

After the assault, the attacker got back into the car, which was a small light-coloured hatch-back driven by a blonde woman. They then left the area heading towards Cockton Hill Road.

nificant issue, especially during colder weather. There has been a 141% increase in fuel payments this winter in comparison to last year.

“Much of this can be attributed to the changes in the benefit system to Universal Credit,” says Bishop Auckland CLP.

“According to the DWP automated helpline, the expected delay would be up to 5 weeks, but in fact the delays have generally been much longer.”

Ms Goodman said: “I was really pleased that

we were able to hand over this cheque from the local Labour Party.

“We’ve now got seven food banks in this constit-uency and I regret that we have to have to have these food banks at all.

“People visit my office and there really is noth-ing left to do except send them to the food bank.

“We’ve had far too many cuts in the benefits sys-tem, which really ought to be supporting people and providing a proper safety net. But as long as it isn’t, it’s important that we all support our local food banks.”

BISHOP AUCKLAND MP, Helen Goodman and town mayor, Cllr David Fleming visited Woodhouse Close food bank recently to present the charity with a donation on behalf of Bishop Auckland Constit-uency Labour Party.

Woodhouse Close food bank has seen a 45% increase on the number of people they have helped this year compared to the previous year, with bene-fit delays accounting for 35% of cases.

Hall said: “This is a much-needed donation.

“We were devastated when we started up after the Christmas holidays to find that the bearings in the stones had all gone rusty and few of the stones would run.

“This was very distress-ing for the players, but thanks to County Durham Housing Group we are again back on track.”

The application pro-cess for the ‘group grant’ has been kept deliber-

ately simple and funding decisions will be made monthly to ensure local groups are not waiting for lengthy periods to find out if they have been suc-cessful.

Full details of the group grant scheme are avail-able at www.countydur hamhousinggroup.co.uk/groupgrant, by calling 0191 349 7777 or by emailing [email protected].

A POPULAR kurling group has been kept up and roll-ing thanks to funding from one of the region’s largest providers of affordable housing.

West Auckland Memo-rial Community Associ-ation’s new age kurling club was at risk of grind-ing to a halt when its stones required expen-sive repairs.

But now volunteers are back on target thanks to funding from County Dur-ham Housing Group.

Almost £300 of ‘group grant’ funding was donated to restore twenty stones, which have seen almost ten years of action.

More than thirty dis-advantaged adults from Bishop Auckland, Crook and West Auckland regu-larly take part in the sport at West Auckland Memo-rial Hall, which provides a highly-valued social out-let for everyone who gets involved.

County Durham Housing Group Funding Officer, Damian Pearson, said: “Without the repairs to these stones the kurling club would have struggled to continue.

“By providing a relatively small amount of funding more than thirty local people can continue to take part in these really valuable sessions.

“This is exactly the kind of project that ‘group grant’ was set up to sup-port; great grass roots activities that have a huge social value.”

The day was rounded off in the clubhouse with a prize presentation, fizz and nibbles and a great friendly atmosphere to relive some of the days highlights.

A spokesperson said: “We would like to express our thanks to our Club Captains, Alan and Angela for their support on the day.”

New starters are always welcome at the club,

which regularly runs Get Into Golf lessons, includ-ing taster sessions to teach everyone from absolute beginners.

WOMEN ON Par is an ini-tiative organised by Eng-land Golf to bring new women into the game and Bishop Auckland Golf Club was selected as one of only five clubs in the county to host an event.

On a glorious day, four-teen ladies from around the area gathered for a fun, friendly format to play a blue tee, nine holes on Tuesday 12th June.

Members of the ladies committee and two of the club’s junior girls accom-panied groups out on the course providing support and advise when necces-sary.

Although golfing ability wasn’t the main focus of the day, there was certainly lots of great golf shots to be seen and even more potential for the future.

WOMEN ON PAR AT BISHOP AUCKLAND GOLF CLUB

Bishop Auckland Golf Club was one of only five club across the county to host a Women On Par event on behalf of English Golf. LAST WEEKEND saw

another triumph for St Mary’s when the U7 Kings returned from the Hetton Juniors tournament with the winners trophy.

After receiving two run-ners-up trophies in their last two tournaments, it was delightful for the club to see the U7 Kings break through to win their first ever trophy.

The U14 Aces and U14 Kings kept up the winning feeling by returning from the Flamingoland Tour-nament with their own sil-verware.

And with the U23s fin-ishing off their league campaign after a back-log of games by winning the League Cup, it looks like there will need to be more silver polish ordered by the club to keep all the trophies shining in the cabinet!

TROPHIES GALORE AS ST MARY’S UP FOR THE CUPS

It was third time luck for St Mary’s Juniors U7 Kings who collected their first winners medals at the Hetton Tournament after two previous runners-up spots.

There were plenty of goals in the final against Wolviston with Morghan Hall notching a hat-trick, Kai Waters collecting a brace and Ashley Adams, Connor Ward and Jordan Lee also making it onto the scoresheet.

The U16 Kings would like to thank secretary Linda Curl and all their sponsors and parents for helping raise over £10,000 to take 16 players over to Spain to play in a cup tournament on Sunday 1st July along with 26 parents.

Announcing that the annual club presentation night for all the teams will take place on Saturday 30th June, club chairman, Steve Coulthard said: “It should be a fantastic night looking back over yet another terrific sea-son for all the St Mary’s sides.”
