Electric People for Electric Cars: Sustainable transport is only as good
as the customer experience.

In the East of England
The reason we do this
CO2 emissions from transport sector
• Current EV market, EV adoption scenarios Projections of the future EV market
• As oil prices surged EV’s expected to experience rapid growth over the coming decades.
• Lache et al. (2008) - EV’s 20% of US new sales and 50% of Western Europe in 2015, increasing to 49% in US and 65% in Europe by 2020.
• JP Morgan (2009) 2020 11m EV’s could be sold worldwide, including 6m to North America - EV ‘s would equal nearly 20% of the North American market and 13% of the global passenger market at that time.

Rapid Charging ??
Where can we charge?
Range anxiety
Is it really the scream?
10,100 charging events over 27 months, 77MWh over 27 months,4,000 domestically (in last nine months) This equates to 308,000 miles
How often do users charge their EVs? How much energy has been provided?
Public and Private charging events
How often and how much
• When do users use EV chargers?
• Evidence from over 27 months with 100 users (approximately)
When
Conclusions• In 2009, JP Morgan projected worldwide EV sales would reach 11 million units by 2020.
• Current limited range would suggest an important role for a comprehensive network of charging infrastructure as a way of reducing - or at least addressing - that technical limitation
• Experience with EValu8 suggest ‘considerers’ agonise about range - users seem to be able to manage any constraints imposed by battery range.
• If most charging done at home how much of a charging infrastructure is required to satisfy
the need to ‘graze’?
• Use appears to be the best sales tool
