MAINTAINING YOUR PORTFOLIO

As part of your personal development you are required to keep a portfolio of learning; this is a compulsory component of your programme. This is an important part of your record of development and the maintenance of a portfolio will be required by the NMC as part of your re-registration in future years. You will receive a portfolio when you commence the programme. The portfolio is an opportunity for you to collect evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be a registered nurse. The clinical skills passport will be included in the portfolio for you to record the development of your clinical skills as you progress through each of the Units. You are also required to demonstrate successful attainment of the professional behaviours expected of a professional nurse; these form part of your assessment of practice document and will be discussed both in your practice review meeting with your mentor and also at the end of Unit review meeting with your personal tutor. The detailed inventory is provided for you to cross reference against when you are reflecting on your progress and development. Additionally, you are required to record evidence of your experiences in Mental Health, Learning Disability, Child and Mother and Child Nursing to meet EU requirements. You will be provided with information regarding the collection of this evidence in Unit 1. Please see separate documentation for Portfolio development and recording EU directives

UNIT 1

1: Personal history and development

a) Your CV.

b) Your APEL of practice and education documents that you completed prior to starting the programme a portfolio of your past caring experience in the format:

c) There also needs to be a section in here that looks at your personal development. Look at what you would like to do at the end of the programme. What are your aspirations and intentions (goals) with regard to where you

would like to work. How are you going to utilise each unit of study (Theory and placement) to help

you achieve these goals. What do you perceive are your current strengths and weaknesses? Integrate this into your CV

d) In this it would also be useful to make a short account of the learning and skills development that have taken place over the duration of your current placement as this will be useful when writing up your personal statement at the end of the programme.

Discuss these with your mentor/personal teacher at reviews.

These should be used as an instrument for reflection at the interview stages. Framework for write up may be as follows:

Your study should involve a description of the issues identified above and a theoretical reflection.

5: Your IP learning forms that should be completed preferably in conjunction with the four patient journeys. A copy of these can be found in Appendix 1 along with the IPL mapping document

7: You will need to include evidence of your attendance at the mandatory sessions so please ensure that your CPR, M&H, fire lecture forms and personal registers are up to date.

8: Please ensure that by the end of the unit that all the life sciences packages that have been timetabled are completed for review by your personal teachers as completion of each of these does constitute one days attendance.

Preliminary, intermediate and final interviews are required Critical care experience section needs completing as you are working with

another member of staff other than your programme mentor for more than 2 weeks.

You need to ensure that you plan the 2 practice assessments into this placement. If you fail at the first attempt the second must be undertaken before the end of the placement. It is advised that you leave time for a four week period of reflection/development prior to retaking a failed attempt. A proforma for making notes regarding medicines for use in your assessment in practice can be found in appendix 2
