INTRODUCTION
Adaption means adjustment to environmental condition. In the process of
teaching, teachers may need to do some modifications or adaptation when
she finds that the materials to be used are not appropriate for the target
audience. Sometimes the adaptation of existing materials is called for
when the materials are judge to be appropriate , but need some simple
modifications to make them more accessible. Existing materials are
physically altered to make them more sensitive to learning needs. Adapting
existing educational materials usually requires less time and fewer
resources than developing new materials.
The good teacher is the one always look for equivalence among the teaching
materials, learners levels, context, the target language and the course
objectives. That is why materials adaptation is a process of setting equivalence in
a language class.
For our group assignment, we have chosen a great song entitled Barney -I Love
You to be adapted. The lyric to I Love You was written by Ms. Lee Bernstein of
Schererville, Indiana. The melody is a slow version of "This Old Man. We found
that the lyrics of the song were so beautiful and could be used in the lesson. The
lyric of the song can be considered as plain and simple. Most of the words can
be easily pronounced and remembered by the pupils. This is a slow tempo song
hence we are sure the pupils would be able to sing the song easily.

CURRICULUM SPECIFICATIONS
We have decided to use this adapted song for listening lesson. This decision was
made due to several reasons. One of the reasons which we think is the most
significant is because pupils have an uncanny ability to appear to be listening to
while actually paying no attention at all. While this is something that may pass
with age it is important to help children develop good listening skills early. So, we
adapted this song to give the pupils some challenging skills to explore and to
develop their listening skills. By developing their ability to listen well we develop
our pupils ability to become more independent learners by hearing accurately.
The lesson plan is designed for year four pupils and the skills (based on the
curriculum specifications ) to be developed are as stated below :
1.2.2 Listen to and repeat correctly phrases and expressions.
1.2.3 Listen to and repeat simple rhymes and songs paying attention to
pronunciation, stress and intonation correctly.
1.3.3Listen to all the words in the word list and demonstrate
understanding of their meaning by matching them to pictures and
the spoken word.
3.2.1 Recognise complete words.
3.2.2 Read and learn the meaning of 5 key words for each topic taught.
3.3.2 Read and understand simple sentences.
4.2.2 Write words, phrases and sentences in clear and legible writing.

Teaching a lesson is condition into three sections, namely pre-listening, while
listening and post listening. Usually at a set induction stage, we refer to a lesson
plan we use stimulus such as song, pictures realia and anything possibly logics.
To prepare the students for the coming lesson. This activity is considered as the
pre-listening activity.
The while listening activity is the next task, here the students need to understand
what he is listening to further focus his attention to a general understanding of
the lesson.
The post listening task is where the teacher conducts the complete lesson and
group the pupils according to their levels where remedial and enrichment
activities are carry out in the classroom. The aim of having two different levels of
activities can help the pupils to develop their understanding of the lesson. Finally,
a song can be introduce to make the child enjoy and reframed what he has
learned where he will be able to use the new vocabulary, grammar and contexts
situation.

HOW MATERIALS WERE ADAPTED
To make the lesson interesting, we first adapted a song according to the pupils
general ability. This is also important to enable the pupils to the right level to
ensure the adapted content is culturally and linguistically appropriate.
Next step is choosing the materials and once we have found the suitable material
to be used, we have to evaluate the material. It is important to thoroughly review
the content for accuracy because it would help us determine if the material can
be used as is, if it can be adapted, or if a new material should be developed to
better meet the training and education needs of the target pupils. During this
stage we also make sure the curriculum specifications to be involved in our
lesson. Finalizing and implementing the proof that the adapted material should
be after pilot testing. Pilot testing is a strategy that allows members of you target
group to review the materials before they are finalized. Pilot testing can also
identify confusing or unclear terms and determine if the material is effective in
increasing knowledge of our pupils. Since the lesson plan is designed for a micro
teaching session, pilot testing is not needed.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING SONG FOR
ADAPTATION
Our group has chosen a song to be adapted because we agreed that children
love rhythm. They are motivated to participate in the lesson more actively if we
use something they love or enjoy. They can remember the lyrics of the song
easily or faster than they can remember the mathematical charts. Educationist
through their research had confirmed that hand claps, finger snaps and sound
effect help to develop s sense of music. Rhythmic body movement encourages
physical or kinesthetic involvement with the song, for example, sign language or
gesture, simple dance steps and clapping with a partner. Movement increases
attention span and participation hence stimulates the involvement of both sides
of the brain. Studies have shown that music gives great impact in learning. Other
than improves concentration and memory, music also can be very useful to relax
people who are overwhelmed or stressed and help people to absorb materials.
Therefore , using song in our teaching will increase the effectiveness of the
teaching and learning process.

the classroom. Some teachers prefer to use background music and other music
lyrics as the basic of a lesson.
Music can be used to :
Introduces a new theme or topic ( Christmas/ colours/feeling)
Break the ice in a class where pupils dont know each other or are having
difficulty communicating
Change the mood ( liven things up or calm things down )
Teach and build vocabulary and idioms
Review materials( background music improves memory)
Teach pronunciation and intonation
Teach song and rhymes about difficult grammar and spelling rules that
need to be memorized ( :I before e , irregular verbs, phrases verbs)
Teaching reading comprehension
Inspire a class discussion
Teaching listening for details and gist
With reference to the lesson plan prepared by our group, we think we have
adapted the song for introducing the new topic or theme (pre-listening

activity), teaching vocabulary (Presentation stage) and the tenth way;
teaching listening for detail and gist (while-listening activity ).
CONCLUSION
Our group members decided to adapted a song for our assignment because
we agreed that music is an amazing tool for teaching language, especially to
children. Good songs will bounce in a learners head long after their lesson is
over. Young learners pick up vocabulary, grammatical structures, and the
rhythm of the language simply by doing what they already love to do.sing.
In addition, music can serve a variety of functions in your classroom, at home,
or even in the car. Music can set a mood. Music can be a bonding
experience.
Listening is a basic for communicating, learning, thinking and acquiring
awareness of the world around us. To help our pupils develop their listening
skills; listening needs to be taught. Since listening requires participation, we
think song is the most amazing tool for them compared to other materials
such as poem, dialogues, interview or news. Songs can motivate them to
participate in learning and songs are also able to relieve their nervousness
and make the information-processing activity run successfully. Listening is a
difficult process. It is more than just hearing; it is deciding what we listen to

and how this can be done most effectively. Therefore we believe that song
could help in creating our pupils to become better learners.
