wo core principles
underlie the ECYS
mission: Music Education,
to nurture, train and develop
young musicians from culturally
diverse backgrounds and encourage
a lasting appreciation of music;
and Musical Excellence, to provide
high-quality performance opportu-
nities for young people and outstanding musical
events for the wider community.
ECYS is distinguished by its unusually large and
diverse number of ensembles, a creative structure that
enables the ECYS faculty to offer an enriching musi-
cal education to the widest possible range of youth.
The young musicians of ECYS range from those at
the beginning of their musical training to those ready
to establish their creative careers as performing
artists. A vibrant repertoire challenges them to excel
as ensemble and solo players, and to discover their
own talents and leadership abilities.
ECYS performances meet critical acclaim and inspire
local, national and international audiences. ECYS
musicians have opportunities to perform with soloists
of international stature, and receive mentoring and
coaching from a distinguished roster of professional
musicians and conductors dedicated to opening the
world of orchestral music to the next generation.

Performance Outreach
he Chamber Music Performance Outreach Program
is an opportunity for ECYS musicians to combine
their appreciation of chamber music with
performances for underserved members of the
community.
Chamber music originated as an intimate form
of music that was played for its own sake, in the
homes of musicians and music lovers. The social and
musical pleasure derived from playing in a small ensemble
makes it a favorite endeavor of professional and student musicians.
ECYS chamber musicians earn community service through their
participation in the program, and represent ECYS at outreach
performances and competitions.
The Chamber Music Performance Outreach Program is
offered to members of Symphony, Sinfonietta, Galbraith
Honor Strings and the El Camino Flute Ensemble. The
chamber ensembles rehearse weekly with a professional coach
from mid-September through mid-May. Interested members may
apply through the ECYS office.
The ECYS Orchestra Performance Outreach Program develops
new partnerships and collaborations with community agencies,
schools, and performing arts groups, to provide orchestral
performances for emerging and underserved audiences. The
Orchestra Performance Program is open to all members of ECYS.

The El Camino Youth Symphony (ECYS) is located in Palo
Alto, California, the home of Stanford University, about 35 miles
south of San Francisco. Its name comes from the Spanish words
el camino real, the royal highway created along the Pacific
Ocean by the early Spanish explorers and missionaries.
The El Camino Youth Symphony Association provides the
financial and administrative support necessary to maintain
the ECYS music education and performance programs. The
Association’s Board of Directors is composed of parents and
interested community members who volunteer their time and
effort. Funding comes from a variety of sources, including
membership dues, concert ticket sales, benefit concerts, and
donations by individuals, foundations, and corporations.
We invite you to become an ECYS patron and contribute
to the music education of our young musicians.Your donation

hank you for your support! For more than four decades, the El Camino Youth
Symphony has been an exemplary arts education organi-
zation. As the Bay Area’s foremost non-profit instrumental
training and education program, ECYS has given nearly
10,000 youth at all levels of musical training the opportunity
to develop both socially and artistically.
At a time when opportunities for music education are being
extinguished, while the power of musical education to make
a profound difference in the lives of youth has never been
more universally understood, ECYS invites you to
reach out and to fill a critical gap in public
funding of the arts.
We welcome you to join us as advocates of
young artists and their place in the grand
tradition of musical education and excellence.
We depend upon generous
friends to fund our
program, as
tuition and
ticket sales cover only a
portion of our expenses.
On behalf of the ECYS Board of
Directors, thank you for your interest in music
education, and thank you for considering
supporting the El Camino Youth Symphony
Association. We would be honored for you
to join our family of supporters.
