School PhotosOn Wednesday, 8th June Advanced Life Photography will be at our school to take our annual school photos. Please ensure that your child is in full winter school uniform on the day. Our preferred method of payment is online. More information about the event can be found further on in the newsletter.
Boom-GateUnfortunately workers severed some cables in the pressure plate for the boom-gate when they were removing a speed hump on our school driveway. This meant that cars could enter the school; however, with the pressure plate broken no one could leave. To overcome this situation we have had to leave the gate up.
Times for parents to enter the school grounds are 7am - 7:25am, 9:10am - 2:20pm and after 3:10pm. Please do not come down the driveway at any other time. We are hopeful the driveway situation will be resolved this Thursday. Thank you for your assistance.
OliverThis Thursday our Year 5 students are travelling to Narrabeen Sports High School to watch a performance of Oliver by the High School students. The High School Students will also be conducting some drama workshops for our students. This is just another example of our schools working closely for the benefit of students at both schools.
Welcome to the Digital revolution: Education in the Age of Disrupted LearningIan Jukes, a renowned Canadian academic, author and keynote speaker is working with Narrabeen Lakes Public School on the 21st Century Fluencies (Modern Learning, as he calls it).
He has kindly agreed to give a presentation entitled ‘Welcome to the Digital revolution: Education in the Age of Disrupted Learning’ to their parent body on Tuesday 7th June at 6.30pm in the library. Mr Andy Rankin, Principal of Narrabeen Lakes, would like to extend an invitation to any parents who may be interested in the topic. Further information can be found further on in the newsletter. Enrolments for 2017Last week we had an impressive number of new parents attend our parent information night. If you haven’t enrolled your child for Kindergarten in 2017 could you please do so as soon as possible? We like to finalise our enrolments by the end of Term 2 (Friday, 1st July) so that we can accurately plan events such as the Teddy Bear’s Picnic. If you know of someone who has a child enrolling for Kindergarten in 2017 can you please let them know about this important information? Our first Kindergarten Tour for 2017 is on Monday, 6th June.
Working with Children Check (WWCC)All parents who volunteer at our school must provide a WWCC number, complete a volunteer declaration and provide 100points of identification. It usually takes 10 minutes to fill out the form, photocopy the information and complete the process. Parents must complete the check AND sign in at the office prior to going to the classroom or canteen for the first time.
Each time a parent volunteers they must sign in at the office before they go to the classrooms or the canteen.

Watch this space each week during the School Sport season. Here you will see the subject matter from the Games and Sports strand of the Physical Education Syllabus. School Sport teachers select a continuing variety from this subject matter over the season. Students are able to apply these movement skills in games and sports. Of course, this requires communication, cooperation, decision making and observation of rules. Let’s get moving....

... IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CAREGIVERSPARENTAL ONLINE PAYMENTS (POP)The School Administrative Manager has previously offered the option of paying school fees directly into the school bank account.
As we will be cutting over to a new finance system, next term, our individual school bank account will no longer exist.
Parents and caregivers will now have the option to make online payments to the school, for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by selecting $ Make a payment. You will see this button after 10th June, 2016.
Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities. There is also a category called ‘Other’ to cover items not covered in the previous headings. ‘Other’ can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice with multiple items.
When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:• the student’s name, and class• the name of the activity eg Yr2 Powerhouse Ex• OR• the student’s name and date of birth.• the name of the activity eg Yr2 Powerhouse Ex
These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system.
This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.
You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed.
Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.
Each note/request for payment which is sent home will have clear instructions on how to pay. We will still have the ability to receipt cash, cheques and credit card payments at the school.

SCHOOL WINTER UNIFORMOur official change to winter uniform is after the long weekend in June, but as it is so cold at the moment winter uniform can be worn anytime from now. Please visit our school website for full item details and order form. The uniform shop shelves are well stocked with all sizes, as well as winter hair accessories, stockings and PSSA socks.
The 2nd Hand shop is also well stocked with all items in most sizes, e.g. Girls uniform $8, Jacket $10 or if you find last year’s uniforms don’t fit and wish to donate them, please drop them in at the front office.

... Athletics Carnival 2016.....|.....MR ROSCONIOur annual School Athletics Carnival is just around the corner! It will be held on Thursday, 30th June at the NSW Academy of Sport, Narrabeen.
There will be a note heading home with all the relevant information for this upcoming event. As per last year, students will need to be dropped down to the track for the carnival by way of private transport. We will be running buses back to school and appreciate your understanding in us doing this as a means of keeping costs to a minimum.
In preparation, we will be asking children to enter into their events this week and have advised them all to come prepared as to which events they would like to enter. The only event that is compulsory for students to enter is the 100m although we would love to see everyone enter every event. It is all about participation here at Elanora!
We have had some requests for current school records so please see below if you are at all interested. These records will also feature in the carnival program that each child will receive prior to the day.

Bryan Palmer Rugby Union 2016 (State Rugby Knockout).....|.....MR ROSCONIOn Monday, 23rd May, 2016 our Opens Rugby Union team descended upon Hassell Park, St Ives for the 2016 State Rugby Knockout Carnival. It was a magnificent day built for open running rugby and our boys were pumped up and excited to show everyone the Elanora spirit!
Our first game saw us take on Balgowlah Heights PS. The boys got off to a solid start with some strong charges by Taylor F and George E laying the platform for the classy backs to take control. In the end we ran out convincing winners 33 - 12.
The second game was a different proposition completely. We were taking on the tough Harbord PS outfit that were noticeably bigger than all other teams at the carnival. Our boys were a bit stand-offish to begin with and were down 21 - 0 early in the first half as the Harbord team were given too much time and space with the ball. To our boys credit though they collected themselves and fought their way back into the match through determination and rugby ‘smarts’. Theo D was outstanding and broke the line to score a wonderful 60m try. At one stage we had clawed our way back to 21 - 12 before Harbord ran in 2 late tries to win 31 - 12. Full credit must go to our boys for never giving up!
Our next game was against the defending State Champions, Newport PS. In what was, in my opinion, the best game of the day our boys played brilliantly against the strong Newport side. With the late inclusion of Sean R our team attacked the ball at the breakdown and out-muscled their more fancied opponents to lead 7 - 5 at the halftime break. The second half continued at a fast tempo with some great skills on display. Noah E was unstoppable on the wing and was given plenty of good, early ball from the classy Connor R and Xavier B. The boys were pressing into the Newport half when the final whistle blew with Elanora going down agonisingly 14 - 15.
Our final game saw our boys come out firing against Hunter Hill PS, winning 26 - 17, with dominant displays from Connor R, Will L-B and Tom C. It was the best way to finish the day after what was a tough but enjoyable day out playing rugby. The win saw us finish 3rd for the day in what was a very commendable result.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the boys for their efforts with training, attending meetings and for the way they represented the school. A massive thank you as well to all the parents who came and supported our boys, it means a great deal to them and me as we couldn’t possibly have days like this without your support.
Looking forward to 2017!

Heights Delights!Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry to our “Name the Canteen Competition” – we received 110 fabulous entries! The canteen committee voted anonymously for their top five entries, but we were unable to pick just one. So, we threw it over to the disco dancers last Thursday, who voted for their favourite.
The top five were Trees and Bees Canteen, Paper Bark Canteen, Snack Shack, Heights Delights and Elanora Heights Yummy Bites. The winner by ONE vote was Heights Delights, submitted by Ella from 1K. Ella and her class will enjoy a rainbow fruit and veg platter on Monday, similar to the one pictured here.
The rainbow platters will now be available to order for your child’s birthday. They are ten dollars each and will be delivered to your child’s class on the day you nominate. To order, please ring the canteen on 9913 2721 at least three days before their birthday. The cost of the platter will be taken out of your existing munch monitor account.
Thank you to all of our canteen volunteers who kept our disco dancers and parents fed on Thursday night! It was fantastic to see so many of our customers embracing our new menu. Thankfully we’ve had some practice on the apple slinky machine – we sold 60 on the night! NSW guidelines only allow two ‘red light’ menu events per term. All our menu items were classified as either ‘green’ or ‘amber’.

Y... Disco Calypso
A fabulous evening was had by all at the disco extravaganza. The kids had a ball with plenty of lively music and dance.
A huge, make that a massive, thank you to all who contributed so generously to the evening from the crew welcoming guests and taking last minute payments, to Barb La Ganza and the canteen crew who kept the food coming, resident DJ Craig and the music maestro Alistair who provided the musical mix. On guard duty were Mr Gillespie, Mrs Lomas and, strutting her stuff and making all the right moves, Ms Pitt. Thank you for your contribution to the evening and keeping order (such as it was) in the house.
As usual, the evening just wouldn’t have happened without Ro Brazel and her extraordinary team who just keep on keeping on doing wonderful things for the school (glad my grammar teacher is not reading this).
Strings ConcertYesterday afternoon the EHPS Strings Ensemble gave a concert in the Hall. This group was founded just 5 years ago and they have made massive strides in a short period of time.
We were treated to solos from students in Year 1 through to Year 6 and all impressed with their excellence. Their ensemble pieces were just as impressive and their specially arranged version of Viva la Vida took the breath away. The ensemble successfully auditioned for the PCS Music Festival in August and we will bring more details closer to the date so you have the opportunity to hear these talented students.
The ensemble is always on the lookout for new talent and if you have a child interested in violin or cello please contact Fiona Brock at [email protected]
Mr Gillespie’s RetirementThe P&C has planned an opportunity for parents (preferably without children) to share some nibbles and a beverage of your choice with Mr Gillespie in the Hall on Wednesday, 15th June from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
Next P&C MeetingThe next P&C Meeting will be held one week later than usually scheduled on Wednesday, 15th June at 7.15pm in the staffroom so we can farewell Mr Gillespie as he is unavailable the week prior.

... PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE (PRC) Update Winter is here and what a lovely time to curl up with a good book.
Congratulations to the following students for recently completing their PRC:
Quite a few other students are very close. Keep up the great work.
Children doing the PRC may borrow extra books in library lessons and also get a list of the books they have borrowed this year. They just need to ask their Library teacher, or parents can contact us through the school.
A reminder that the PRC ends on 19th August. Some children have said they would still like to start the PRC, and it is not too late. We can provide a list of the books your child has already borrowed this year - just contact us through the school.

In today’s digital world, we are witnessing the evolution of an incredibly turbulent new age. It’s the Age of Disrupted Learning- an age where every part of society is experiencing a complete upheaval due to the pervasive nature of disruptive change. In order to thrive, our schools, like our businesses, communities, and families, must continually adapt to these changing conditions. This presentation examines the changing nature of our world; identifies the critical 21st-century skills not being addressed by our current educational system; and specifically identifies how we can effectively engage learners so that they can perform exceptionally well on exams while simultaneously learning the critical new basics needed to excel in both school and life beyond school.

…… Ethics classes are now at EHPS from Kindy to Year 6!Ethics is a branch of philosophy that asks questions about values, principles, human action and interactions. Students consider ethical issues based on reason and evidence. They also consider other students opinions in a sincere and respectful way. Dr Sue Knight, an Australian academic in philosophy and education, designed the curriculum. The aim of these classes is to encourage an examined and responsible life.
So what does an ethics class actually look like? Students sit in a circle to encourage discussion. A number of basic rules are followed, which centre on respectful listening and participation. Class discussions are sparked by a case study or story, and it’s the role of the teacher to draw out the children’s opinions – not offer their own. What the children think, and most importantly why they think that way are at the centre of these discussions. The reflection process that the children go through is paramount – a final conclusion is not.
Elanora’s ethics classes have covered a number of topics already this year.
Years 1 and 2 have particularly loved the discussion surrounding pride – does too much pride lead to arrogance? Does being justifiably proud provide a good understanding of self worth? And where is the line between each? The Greek myth about Icarus kicked-off discussions. The children loved hearing about the minotaur trapped in his labyrinth, Icarus’s escape on his engineered bird wings and his subsequent demise when he flew too close to the sun.
Pride was also explored by a case study where Millie received a video game for being responsible and helping her grandmother. Millie’s actions were contrasted with Jeb’s, who received the same video game through deception.
Kindergartens have been talking about questions. What questions are, why we might sometimes be afraid to ask questions and whether sharing and discussing our ideas can help others make up their minds.
The first topic for the year 3 - 4 class was ‘being selfish’. What is our motivation for doing things? Self-interest? Others interest? And whether there is anything wrong with acting predominately in our own self-interest.
Our year 5-6 class has looked at a fair society – inequalities that are caused deliberately or by bad luck, and whether either kind of inequality is wrong and whether we should do anything about them.

It addresses ethical issues and is designed especially for children. Season one has topics such as; can you trust a robot? Is stealing music or jokes really stealing? And is it ever okay to fight back against a bully?
