the Medical Center in 2015, I worked with the

medical leadership to define our vision for the

year 2020. We made a promise to our patients to

pursue excellence as global leaders in medicine.

We committed to provide personalized, precision

medicine to each patient – from premature babies

fighting for their lives to senior citizens reaching

their final stages of life.

To keep our pledge, we must continuously progress

and take leaps forward in medical practices,

research, technologies, facilities and expertise.

There is too much at stake here for our patients

and for medical care in Israel and worldwide to do

otherwise. To invest in the advancements we need

to make, we rely on the assistance provided by

generous donors such as you.

I invite you to learn more about Tel Aviv Sourasky

Medical Center and to meet the world-class

professionals whose expertise and dedication

Tel Aviv’s only Level 1 trauma center

Sole responsibility for emergency care 24/7 in Tel Aviv

Covering the central coastal region – from Hadera in the north to Ashkelon in the south

Saving lives: No greater mission

The Tel Aviv Emergency & Trauma Center

of the team often make the difference between

life and death. Patients from severely vulnerable

populations all find medical refuge at the center:

the elderly, Holocaust survivors, the disabled and

the poor who have nowhere else to turn.

At the 20-year-old facility, where accommodations

and bed space are at a premium, demand for

services increases every year. Patients are feeling

the strain of a facility stretched beyond its capacity.

The new center: Patient-focused life-saving care when it is needed most

The new Tel Aviv Emergency & Trauma Center is

designed so that patients are always at the center

of care and treated with the attention, privacy and

comfort that they deserve. The new facility will be

protected from external attacks of all kinds. It will

put at patients’ disposal expanded mass-trauma

capabilities needed in this city, which is under

continuous terror threat, so that patients like Alona

can survive catastrophic injuries.

A stopgap measure: Short-term expansion and enhanced service

With the project’s completion slated for 2020, the

center is immediately annexing a new wing, adding

20 new beds to the 50-bed department. This first

phase of expansion is critical for expedited intake,

boosted staffing, streamlined processes and a

larger family support area. The year 2020 is too far

off for the next terror victim, heart attack patient or

accident casualty to wait.

In central Israel, tragedy can strike when it is least

expected. That is why every year, tens of thousands

of people such as Alona Shaportov owe their lives

to the Tel Aviv Emergency & Trauma Center. The

center is on the front line when terror claims its

victims. Sick and injured patients are greeted around

the clock by the emergency and trauma team’s

healing touch. Its medical care is best practice,

and the split-second decisions and urgent actions

1500+Annual rehab patients

~500Medical, nursing and allied health students per year

Shortening patients’ long road to recoveryEvery year, thousands of patients recovering from

serious illness or injury are motivated to complete their

rehabilitation in Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center’s

Rehabilitation Hospital. The next step in their recovery

is to receive expert neurological, orthopedic, geriatric

or respiratory rehabilitation. Unfortunately, these

patients are referred to other rehab facilities because

the Medical Center lacks the full array of rehab services

– comprehensive care that matches the scale and the

standard of excellence of its acute care services.

The final page in the patient’s continuum of care portfolio

We have high expectations for the Sylvan Adams

Center – to provide the complete range of therapeutic

care for patients who have already come so far,

including physical and occupational therapy,

hydrotherapy in a state-of-the-art treatment pool and

day program rehabilitation.

Coming full circle for caregivers who make all the difference

To boost the human art of health science, the Sylvan

Adams Center will host the Tel Aviv University nursing,

physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech

therapy programs, the High Performance Sports

Medicine Research Program and the Health Sciences

Simulation Center. With these plans, the Medical

Center is one giant step closer to making its health

science and rehab vision a reality.

The Maternity and Newborn Care Center

Helping each new life get off to a healthy startParents-to-be from all over the Tel Aviv region and

Israel entrust their most precious treasures to the

hands of Lis Maternity & Women’s Hospital’s labor

and delivery specialists. Mothers who are at risk of

miscarrying rely on gifted Medical Center obstetri-

cians to help bring their babies to term with a viable

chance of survival.

The new center: A remedy for natural growing pains

The new Maternity and Newborn Care Center arose

from the need to meet increasing patient demand

for our world-class services in labor and delivery,

postpartum and high-risk pregnancy. For expect-

ant parents, the center’s calm, welcoming, ultra-

modern environment sets the stage for their entire

delivery experience. As the center meets new ex-

pectations in standards of care, its goal is to pro-

vide families with the privacy they need to bond, as

well as stress-reducing comforts to ease them into

parenthood.

Protecting “priceless possessions”

In a city under looming threat of military attack, new

mothers and fathers will rest assured that their new-

born is out of harm’s way in the new neonatal emergen-

cy shelter. The Maternity and Newborn Care Center

makes a commitment to mothers and fathers to give

their babies a warm, loving start on their life’s journey.

As cancer patients endure many arduous elements

of treatment, they usually have a group of medical

professionals looking after them. At Tel Aviv Sourasky

Medical Center, the whole expert treatment team

revolves around the patient. These compassionate

caregivers join forces and focus their effort to champion

each patient’s health from disease detection through

post-disease follow up. They provide individualized

care to give patients the best possible chance of a

cancer-free future.

benchmark in cancer treatment and research. As

Israel’s largest supporter of international research

protocols, the Clinical Research Center gives patients

the opportunity to participate in promising research

studies. Patients also have access to immunotherapy

treatments from the only center in Israel authorized to

perform cell personalization.

Providing quality, patient-friendly care around the clock

The Oncology Center is writing the book on perfecting

the patient experience. Every new patient is seen

within 48 hours, clinic doors are open until 9:00 p.m.

and the 24/7 call center allows patients to focus on

their lives rather than their treatment schedules.

When we put patients first, everything else falls into place

Patients visiting the new Oncology Center will be

welcomed into a layout designed specifically for their

disease, with all essential care – inpatient, clinic and

day hospital services – right there for them in one

unified facility. On-site care for the patient’s body and

mind alike will ensure that their nutrition, pain, anxiety

and lifestyle needs are met.

The New Hemato-OncologyCenter

So often, a diagnosis of cancer can feel like a death

sentence. The Hemato-Oncology Center holds promise

for treating blood-related and lymphatic cancers.

Comprehensive world-class care

Patients will have at their disposal the complete

range of services they need, to undergo routine care

as well as progressive treatments and approved

experimental therapies. Resources such as bone

marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, hospitalization,

day hospital procedures and hematology services are

all resources applied to attack cancer head on. The

hemato-oncology clinics will organize and specialize

by disease to best serve patients. In the process,

patients receive the personalized attention and caring

touch of the specialist hemato-oncology team.

Leading-edge immunotherapy for treatment-resistant disease

Hemato-Oncology Center patients tackling cancer

that resists conventional therapies can receive

breakthrough immunotherapy to supercharge

their deficient immune system. By analyzing and

understanding each patient’s molecular make-up, the

center genetically programs specific immune cells to

kill cancer cells. This precise method, which targets

cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact, trains

cells to keep fighting the disease.

The Basic Research Lab for revolutionary patient-centric therapy

To introduce new, progressively more effective

treatment, the elite team fast-tracks a bench-to-bedside

approach, transforming basic scientific research into

clinical research and converting clinical findings into

solutions for diagnosis, routine care and prevention.

But, in order to continue moving forward in perfecting

individualized patient care in a supportive setting,

the Hemato-Oncology Center needs state-of-the-art

patient treatment facilities, an expanded research lab

and equipment. With these new facilities, resources

and collaborating partners, the center can add new

tools to its arsenal against cancer so that patients can

finally live free from the hardship of disease.

The Cancer Immunotherapy Center

Immunotherapy is the latest word in cancer

treatment. While medicine has progressed in

applying immunotherapy to blood-related cancers,

the application to solid tumors has been farther off

in the distance.

Spearheading solutions on a global scale

The Cancer Immunotherapy Research Center is making

progress on all fronts of cancer, with tremendous

momentum toward decoding this enigma. Tel Aviv

Sourasky Medical Center is privileged to have on its

team a cancer immunotherapy pioneer, Prof. Zelig

Eshhar, who directs the Basic Immunotherapy Research

Lab and the bench-to-bedside clinical program. The

cutting-edge pharmaceutical company, Kite Pharma,

the only organization outside the U.S. that is leveraging

Prof. Eshhar’s innovative technology, has developed a

solution that the Medical Center has already used to

treat its first patient successfully.

The compelling master plan based on award-winning science

Working to supercharge the immune system, the

center genetically engineers and grows cancer-

killing cells to recognize and go after cancer cells,

suppresses the cells that prevent the immune system

from destroying cancer cells and boosts the cells

that teach the immune system to fight off cancer.

The teams are studying biomarkers – biological

measurements used to predict disease risk to help

with prevention, early detection and monitoring

treatment effectiveness. The center is also developing

solutions to keep the body from rejecting donated

stem cells after transplantation.

The dynamic setting where the seemingly impossible can happen

With its pre-clinical and clinical research plan, world-

renowned team, novel methods and tissue bank for

translational research, the Medical Center is uniquely

positioned to pursue immunotherapy solutions.

To proceed with this ambitious plan, the research

center needs cleanroom lab facilities and a synergistic

environment to foster progress, knowledge-sharing

and scientific collaboration. Working together in the

lab and with Hemato-Oncology Center and Oncology

Center colleagues from throughout the world, the

research center’s objective is to be the vanguard in

cancer immunotherapy and, someday soon, be able

to say: “We can cure cancer.”

The New Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

600Children treated per year

National referral center for the

most complex cases

Having a child hospitalized with a life-threatening

condition is one of life’s gravest situations. Thanks

to the tireless efforts of the Dana-Dwek Children’s

Hospital intensive care team, children and their

families are never alone in their fight for survival.

A facility that matches Dana-Dwek’s elite standard of care

The upgraded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will

meet the quality care standards provided by the

hospital’s world-class clinicians. With ever-evolving

lifesaving methods and proven care conditions,

the unit will provide excellent service to our most

vulnerable children at this critical juncture in their

lives. The upgraded space centers all efforts on

getting children out of immediate danger, with

the latest medical technologies located on hand,

support staff within reach and a private, spacious

environment that is comforting for kids.

The key to kids’ recovery: Parents at their bedside

Children who require ongoing medical attention

need their parents at their side for their physical

and emotional health. This is why the new design

brings parent involvement to the fore, with

accommodations that help families say, “I am right

beside you, helping you pull through.”

World-class critical care during the most pivotal moment in a child’s life

Your assistance will build the new 13-bed, 10,800-square-foot (1,000-square-meter) PICU to treat 600 severely ill children per year.

Giving adolescents a supportive place to turn to in Tel Aviv

The Pediatric Psychiatry DepartmentIt is unfathomable that a city the size of Tel Aviv has

never had a psychiatric hospital to treat teenagers

with mental, addictive, or emotional disorders.

Teens needing hospitalization or day hospital

services must seek care miles outside the city,

which places a huge burden on their families. Wait

times for admission to mental health facilities due

to space limitations are unacceptable. In addition,

remote hospitalization breaks the continuity of care

for teens who are being treated in the local Medical

Center clinic, causing potential emotional setbacks

and time delays.

Closing the gap in services to help kids get the care they need

The new Pediatric Psychiatry hospital ward and day

hospital aim to fill this void in care with new services

focused solely on adolescents aged 12 to 18.

The facility will enable teens to be treated locally

with minimal transition, continuing timely therapy in

the same Medical Center setting and with the same

expert care team across the care continuum. This

integration will maintain trusted bonds with doctors

and therapists, which are essential to mental health

recovery.

Youth-focused care in a setting that speaks to young people

These facilities will provide this highly vulnerable

population with a range of treatments targeted to

their needs, including private or group therapy;

medication; and art, movement and occupational

therapies. The ward will accommodate a parent to

sleep in when necessary. For many adolescents,

being treated close to both home and friends in

an outpatient setting can help reinforce healthy

relationships and routines, which are vital during

times of uncertainty in their lives.

Your generosity will build a hospital inpatient ward, outpatient day hospital and outdoor recreation area, benefiting hundreds of teens every year.

The Sagol Brain Center

The global source for knowledge and discovery

The Center will be the international nucleus of brain

science and medicine, heralding a world-wide

revolution in brain health. Enlisting the power of

novel imaging techniques, big-data bioinformatics

and mobile solutions, the center will help reveal

how the brain works – from its most intricate

neurons to its big-picture function as an integrated

super-system – and how it can be supported.

The cornerstone imaging facility, featuring MRI

and Electroencephalography (EEG) systems, will

map brain wiring and activation non-invasively.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) will map brain

function with unprecedented accuracy to the millimeter.

The Big Data & Analytics Center will supply and

interpret enormous varieties and volumes of

behavioral and biological data continuously streamed

from clinical sources and wearable technologies.

These findings will inspire researchers to develop

novel therapies using non-invasive stimulation and

brain-computer interfaces.

Personalized applications as broad as the functions of our gray matter

As the center transforms insights into medical

applications, its goal is to implement non-invasive

solutions tailored to each patient. This way, treatment

will not be an impossible conundrum, but part of routine

care – and prevention technologies will become the

standard in medical practice.

The quest is on to unlock the mysteries of the

human brain and discover the solutions to unsolved

neurological and psychiatric conditions. The Sagol

Brain Center has already achieved a number

of patient-care firsts that include reversing the

devastating effects of neuropsychiatric disorders,

such as chronic pain and post-traumatic stress,

alleviating anxiety and curing sleep disturbances.

While these accomplishments have been global

medical milestones, they merely scratch the surface

of the possibilities.

The New Genetics Institute

Many parents-to-be fear for the health of their un-

born babies due to potential genetic flaws. Shar-

ing similar concerns, many patients face uncertain

chances of survival due to cancer or hereditary dis-

eases because of a microscopic defect in their DNA.

The Genetics Institute: Leading the charge to stop the tragedy of genetic diseases

The Genetics Institute, with its global reputation,

helps patients and physicians navigate these un-

knowns with individualized insights into their genet-

ic makeup. The institute advises parents on family

planning, consults with medical teams on the way

genetics affect cancer, degenerative disorders and

hereditary conditions and develops solutions to

treat and prevent debilitating and fatal diseases.

Expanding the Genetics Institute: Room for tests, consultations and research

The new facility is designed to give patients of all

ages and life stages privacy and support in a com-

fortable setting as they face the most challenging

decisions of their lives.

The institute’s state-of-the-art laboratories will be

pivotal in finding next-generation solutions in spe-

cialties such as oncology, neurology, endocrinology

and gastroenterology. The expansion will give expert

geneticists room to unravel the secrets of our genet-

ic code so that tiny mutations in patients’ DNA will no

longer have such a devastating impact on their lives.Giving people the chance to revise their medical destiny

While our ancestors may no longer be with us,

their history lives on in our own genetic profiles.

The secrets of the diseases to which people are

susceptible are encoded in human DNA, together

with clues on the best way to prevent or fight them.

Science has proven that broad-brush solutions to

diseases that recur or resist treatment do not get

to the heart of the problem. To stop disease in its

tracks, medicine must understand how each unique

body works – at the most minute, individualized level

– using a personalized approach.

Giving “head to toe” a new meaning

The Center for Proactive & Personalized Medicine

is a visionary, long-term initiative to develop

and deliver targeted treatments and prevention

strategies that are based on each patient’s biological

fingerprint. This precision medicine approach

starts from the ground up – from the patient’s DNA-

level genetic make-up (aka genomics) to molecular

activity, cellular biology and organ function (aka

metabolomics). It also evaluates the body’s whole

ecosystem and the effects of foods consumed, as

well as environmental exposure, on gene activity.

Expanding the application of personalized medicine to preventive care

The center will put into practice breakthrough

diagnostics to identify the genes that predispose

us to disease. Center team members will tailor

interventions to counteract each person’s disease

predisposition and support health and healing. The

center will supply ever-evolving data from advanced

systems and physical wearable technologies

to help physicians and health professionals

advise their individual patients on proactive

measures to promote health and prevent disease.

The meeting of medicine and the human touch

While science drives much of the medical

decision-making at the Center for Proactive &

Personalized Medicine, the entire approach keeps

the “personal” in personalized medicine, with

compassion and individual patient preferences as

fundamental principles of care, and a focus on the

importance of each human life.

The Outpatient Surgery Center

Accelerated patient recovery in state-of-the-art suites

the vision of patient- and family-focused care, the

new Outpatient Surgery Center will enable patients

to have ambulatory surgery for procedures that do

not require an overnight stay, such as orthopedics,

ophthalmology, urology and a range of pediatric

procedures.

An atmosphere of wellness, not illness

Ambulatory surgeries help patients bounce back

more quickly than inpatient operations do, and

patients also perceive outpatient surgery as more

minor. Patients prefer returning to their comfortable

home settings and caring families immediately after

surgery. Ambulatory procedures reduce patient

exposure to hospital infections and complications,

decrease hospitalizations and lower patient and

health system costs.

A new standard of convenience, simplicity and service

The facility layout will optimize patient comfort

and flow. The center will feature 10 ultra-modern

operating suites plus a preparation room, recovery

suite and short-stay hospitalization suite. These

new facilities will also free up congested inpatient

operating rooms.

Patients will appreciate the welcoming, reduced-

stress environment and child-friendly focus of the

Outpatient Surgery Center, along with the backing

of the trusted medical expertise and full tertiary-

care service at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

The Israeli public health system’s number one

challenge is to reduce the surgery waiting list for

both pediatric and adult patients. The Medical

Center aims to do its part to remedy this procedure-

backlog issue by constructing the Outpatient

Patient-centric space and individualized attentionTrust is what brings loyal patients from all over Israel to

the physicians of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Department. With best practice prevention, testing

and treatment services amid a nationwide shortage

of GI doctors and treatment space, it is no wonder

that the department is bursting at the seams;

patients must sometimes wait months for procedures

and appointments. In fact, to accommodate the

patients under its care, the endoscopy recovery

service operates around the clock.

All patients have a right to personal attention and

privacy from each caregiver they encounter. Space

limitations severely hinder the staff’s ability to attend

to their patients comfortably and place a burden on

patient confidentiality.

A quality service environment: What patients and families deserve

The expansion will help us deliver the outstanding

care that we have provided for years while achieving

new levels of convenience and privacy.

The design will give patients space for reception,

recovery, monitoring and discharge, allowing them

more time with their clinicians. Patients seeking

world-class care for chronic conditions, one-time

assessments, or preventive care will be able to get

in and out more quickly so they can return – in good

health – to the lives they want to lead.

The Medical Center prides itself on pushing the

frontier of medicine ever forward, harnessing

sophisticated equipment to diagnose disease, treat

patients, follow up on patient progress and focus on

illness prevention.

The best practice in collaborative diagnostics, treatment and research

The medical teams use diagnostic technologies,

independently and combined, to get to know each

patient thoroughly – at all biological levels. The

insights gained from these advanced imaging,

laboratory and genetics systems and techniques

give clinical professionals knowledge of the patient’s

exact diagnosis so they can build a targeted

treatment or prevention plan.

Treatment devices help physicians pinpoint specific

conditions and sites, reach areas inaccessible

to the human hand and minimize impact on non-

affected areas so as to expedite a patient’s return

to functioning. When put to work in the hands of

the Medical Center’s many research teams, these

diagnostic and treatment systems can light the way

to breakthroughs in various disciplines of medicine.

Returning patients to health and improving quality of life

Patients are benefiting from these innovations, which

pave the way for safer, less invasive, more precise,

low-radiation approaches that eliminate agonizingly

long wait times and fear-inducing unknowns. But, in

order to empower its clinical and research teams to

practice the type of progressive medicine expected

in this new generation of patient-centric care, the

Medical Center needs to give its talented teams

access to these benchmark tools.

The key to true personalized patient care

A Digital PET-CT ScannerThe human element in patient-centered medicine

lies in the ability to reassure patients that care

team members know as much as possible about

their condition and are doing all that they can to

treat it. The Medical Center is working to honor

this commitment with state-of-the-art diagnostic

systems and tailored treatments.

For cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infections

and inflammations, as well as degenerative,

neurological and brain-based conditions, the

digital PET-CT has become the gold standard

for diagnosing disease and making treatment

decisions, as well as for evaluating disease

progression and treatment success.

A non-invasive glimpse into the body

The hybrid PET-CT enables clinicians to view

biological processes at the cellular and molecular

levels. The fusion of PET functional data and CT

morphology data gives the medical team a more

complete understanding of disease processes.

The system’s tracers – trackable radioactive

material introduced into the body – evaluate tissue

function and structure, as well as irregular tissue

activity. Armed with this information, clinicians can

tailor treatment to each patient.

Important benefits to patient diagnostics, treatment and follow-up

This new digital technology has greatly enhanced

3D resolution, image quality and accuracy, together

with upgraded change-detection sensitivity. The

system will reduce patient exposure to radiation

without compromising lesion detectability. This

feature is particularly advantageous for children

and young adults and for patients with non-

oncologic conditions. By opening the door to new

tracers and other features, this machine will help

the Medical Center continue to perfect care and

medical research – as a hallmark of precision

medicine.

Every year, thousands of patients with neurological,

cardiovascular, bone marrow and oncology diseases

put their faith in Medical Center diagnosticians and

clinical professionals to provide a targeted treatment

plan based on rigorous diagnosis.

Synchronized and accurate scanning for extended applications

The PET-MRI system will give the Medical Center

team a level of diagnostic detail unavailable in

the scanners it has today. The hybrid capabilities

analyze both the structure of patient’s tissues and

how they function, and differentiate between normal

and abnormal tissue function. These details help

physicians make precise diagnoses so that patients

can be prescribed the optimal intervention.

Toward safer testing and personalized care

The PET-MRI’s high-contrast, high-resolution images

provide pinpoint accuracy. This diagnostic

confidence, together with the ability to detect minute

tissue changes over time help physicians make better

and quicker therapeutic decisions and adjust the

patient’s intervention based on treatment response.

Combining both PET and MRI tests in one device

saves equipment and professional resource time.

While the PET-MRI and PET-CT both scan for disease,

the two technologies complement one other. Each

scanner has its strengths and each works best with

certain tissues and conditions. The radiation exposure

from the PET-MRI is dramatically lower than that of

the PET-CT, making the PET-MRI ideal for children

and patients who must undergo frequent scans.

The PET-MRI opens up a new world of precision

medicine. It can expand possibilities for patient

diagnostics, early detection and follow-up, and

empower medical and scientific teams across multiple

disciplines to forge ahead with cutting-edge research.

greater Tel Aviv’s residents and to promote healthy living

in Israel. In order to achieve excellence in the realm

of public healthcare, we need resources and funding

above and beyond what the government provides.

The Medical Center is at a critical juncture. We have

a pioneering vision for patient care, research and

education that could save lives and improve health

and quality of life in the year 2020 and beyond. We

have a lot to accomplish and we can realize this vision

if we all work together. This is our moment and yours.

If you would like to discuss the next steps on the

initiatives in this booklet or propose a program

not detailed here, you are welcome to contact me

personally at +972-52-426-2000 or [email protected].

Wishing you ongoing good health.

Ronni Gamzu

What is your vision for 2020?
