EL INFORMADOR
AATSP LONG ISLAND CHAPTER
www.aatsplongisland.com November 2019 President’s Letter Dear Colleagues: I hope that your year has started well and that it is shaping up to being a promising year ahead. This issue is late in getting to you due to many changes that we are making to our local Chapter activities. It is with a heavy heart that I express to you that our organization is in jeopardy of not surviving. We are sorely in need of additional members on our Executive Council. Due to a lack of manpower and organization, we were unable to host our traditional Entrega Award Ceremony in June, a tradition that dates back to well before 1990, when I joined the Council. We need people (such as Treasurers, Coordinators, etc.) to perform the different tasks that keep our council running and providing opportunities for our members and their students. This year, please consider offering your services, your time and your energy if you would like to see this organization remain viable. Many of you have been members for decades and can certainly remember when we were a thriving, productive chapter. We would very much like to maintain that reputation. Please consider joining our council. You can contact us at [email protected]. Most urgent to inform you is that we will not be offering our usual contests as in the past. We have been known for our Design-a-Card and Essay contests and for our association with the NSE. As predicted in prior messages, due to a shrinking number of teachers actively serving on our Council, we cannot successfully and professionally coordinate these traditional student activities. We do not have people to do that. Therefore, for the 2019-2020 year, things are going to be very different. Without student contests possible, the Executive Council is going to focus our energies towards our teacher members. We have shifted our mission to offering workshop events and Professional Growth opportunities. Please check our online resources for future information about member workshops that are currently in the planning stages for this year. We will inform you of events through email announcements, flyers and updates on our website so please check in with us periodically. You can access our chapter and information at: www.aatsplongisland.com. With a simple click, you can find information about membership, our meeting schedule, chapter news, professional development, and highlights of events. In this issue, you will find a summary of all our 2018-2019 contest winners and articles highlighting our different events and contests from the past academic year. In an effort to be “paperless” we are now sending our Informador via email and we will always have the issue posted on our website. The national office has suggested making this change as an economic and environmental concern. We hope you like the new delivery. Please let us know your opinion. In closing, the Executive Council wishes you a successful and productive year ahead. Personally, as my term as President comes to a close, I also wish you a good year and I thank you for the honor of serving as this chapter’s President for the last two years. Things are changing for our chapter. With everything shared above, if you have ever thought of joining us, please consider becoming active on our Executive Council now. We have adapted our agenda for the coming year to work with what we have. Let’s see how it goes.
Sincerely, Donna Bennett
President
