Cuando la usamos?

• To describe a habitual or repeated action in the past. The exact times when the action began and ended are not important.

• To refer to actions or states that were ongoing, incomplete, or in progress in the past

• To give description for an event in the past (gives background info) while the preterit moves the action forward.

Preterito v. Imperfecto

• Which to use depends on whether the speaker is describing an action completed in the past or a continuous, reoccurring action in the past.

Imperfecto

Use the imperfect to talk about a continuous, habitual, or repeated action in the past. The moment when the action began or ended is unimportant.

Carmen iba al supermercado con frequencia.

Cada dia compraba las coasa que necesitaba.

Casi siempre pagaba con tarjeta de credito.

Preterit

To express actions or events that began and ended at a specific time in the past.

Anoche fui al supermercado

Compró una caja de detergente

El dependiente puso todo en una bolsa

• Sometimes a sentence will have two actions occuring either in the same tense or in two different tenses.

Pret + Imp (One verb describes the background (Imp) and the other verb describes the event that interrupted the ongoing action (pret))

La Voz Pasiva “se”

• When we say something is being done without saying who does it we are using the passive voice.

The fish is sold at the market

In spanish, we use “se” to do this

Se vende pescado en el marcado.

Se venden papas en la verdulería.
