The Rite of Sending offers the parish community, through their Godparents and Sponsors, an opportunity to acknowledge the spiritual progress the Catechumens and Candidates have made, and send them forth to our Archbishop, with assurance of our Parish’s care and support. Across the world, Catholic Bishops welcome to their Cathedrals, Catechumens (unbaptized) and Candidates (already baptized), sent by local parishes, to gather together with their Godparents and Sponsors, in what is known as the “Rite of Election” on March 10 th for Catechumens and the “Rite of Calling to Continuing Conversion” on March 17 th for Candidates. In Sacred Scripture, the Book of Revelation makes reference to a “Book of Life” in which are written the names of those who have chosen to follow Christ and be baptized. We, who are already baptized, had our names written in the Book of Life at our Baptism. In the Rite of Sending, those preparing for Baptism are invited to come forward and sign the “Book of The Elect,” as a sign of their desire to be numbered among the chosen of God. So we, the Parish Community of St. Rose of Lima Church, at the 9 AM Mass, will Send our Catechumens and Candidates to Archbishop Jose Gomez. We are asked to continue to pray for them as they enter into the final period of preparation for their Full Initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Celebration.

Dear friends, Lent begins this coming Wednesday. Last week I read a great article written by Marcel LeJeune, 8 Ways to Share Your Catholic Faith on Ash Wednesday. 1. When asked, explain why you have ashes on your forehead. It is nearly inevitable that if you

get your ashes early enough in the day (and you don’t accidentally wipe them off), you will run into someone who tells you that there is something (“dirt”, “smudge”, “stuff”, etc.) on your forehead. Remember, they are being polite in telling you this. So, return the favor by explaining what the ashes are for (a Biblical sign of repentance) and share your faith by explaining Lent and Ash Wednesday to them. As long as we don’t flaunt our faith for a show, it isn’t against the biblical directive of doing acts of faith for others to see.

2. Invite someone to Mass with you. While I don't think inviting non-disciples to Mass is a great idea in most situations (see here for why) - on Ash Wed, anyone is welcome to receive ashes in a Catholic Church. They need not even be Christian to receive them. This isn’t the case for Communion though, so it is a good time to explain our liturgy, belief in the Eucharist, basis for Sacraments, etc. to them. If you don’t know a good way to explain why a non-Catholic cannot receive the Eucharist, then this explanation should help. 3. Discuss lent online. Most of us are connected to others through social media. With these connections come the availability and opportunity to help them come closer to Christ and His Church. So, start a discussion about what lent is for, what it means, or ask what others are doing for lent. Keep it positive and encourage all to participate. You might post a link from an online blog (like this one!) or a video. 4. Fast and Pray for others. The heart of evangelization is found in our prayer. We cannot help others if the source of our spiritual life is not deeply rooted in Christ through prayer. Since lent is a time of “increased prayer, fasting, and almsgiving“, we should use this increase in our prayer and fasting for others. The next step is to tell someone that you have been praying and fasting for them. If you want to reach an even higher level of evangelization, invite them to pray (and possibly fast) with you. Imagine that you pray daily and fast weekly for someone throughout Lent. Then at Easter, you write them a nice note telling them what you have done and why. The impact could be huge. 5. Witness to another person about your faith, if the opportunity arises. There can be multiple opportunities to talk about your faith with someone throughout Lent. If a chance arises, take advantage of it. The point isn’t to convince, preach, or change someone’s mind. The point is to share an important part of your life with another person. We talk about sports, weather, and other unimportant things freely, why not discuss something of real value, your faith? I would first pray that God provides such opportunities for you, then keep an eye out! "Jesus give me opportunities to evangelize" is a dangerous prayer, because he answers it!

6. Invest yourself in a relationship with a new friend. To make any relationship work you have to invest time and effort into it. You must open yourself up to the other person and truly love them. True love would always want what is best for the other person. What could be better than helping them know Christ and the Catholic faith better? Ultimately all effective evangelization comes down to good relationships. So, spend your time investing in others! Many folks are willing to try something new during Lent, so why not start off by inviting someone to join you in a small group, praying together, etc. on Ash Wednesday? 7. Go out of your way to start Lent off with a bang. Don’t just “give something up” for lent. DO SOMETHING DARING! Write a nice note every day during Lent thanking different folks for being a part of your life. Say nice things to those you live with, work with, and are around daily. Start a random conversation in the grocery store line. Do something that pushes you to be a better you and a better evangelist. Start this Ash Wednesday! 8. Take a picture of your ashes and tag them on social media with the #AshTag hashtag. As long as you are posting in a spirit of humility and love for others, you can witness to a larger audience on social media. Just make sure you are praying for those who will see your picture.

Good ideas. Maybe we can do some of them. Have a great beginning to Lent!

Yours in Christ, Fr. Joseph Shea

“Helping Build Up the Domestic Church”

What is the “Domestic Church”? The term “Domestic Church” refers to the family, the smallest body of gathered

believers in Christ. Though recovered only recently, the term dates all the way back to the first century AD. The Greek word ecclesiola referred to “little church.” Our Early Church Fathers understood that the home was fertile ground for discipleship, sanctification, and holiness. Are you and your family saints in training in your own “little church”? Your answer should be YES! Visit the Office of Faith Formation for more information on training to be saints!

Catholic Faith Facts Apologetics Class Would you like to be ready with Biblical answers to what Catholics really believe? Have you ever wondered “Why do we Catholics do that”? Would you like to share the faith in a dynamic way? Then this is the place for you! Sessions meet every other Wednesday.

We meet every other Wednesday in Room 9 of the School at 7:00 pm. Come and fortify your armor (Ephesians 6:13-17) so you will “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope” (1 Peter 3:15).

R.C.I.A. Dismissal Sessions Perhaps you’ve seen the Catechumens (unbaptized) and Candidates (already baptized) being “dismissed” after the Homily at the Sunday 9 AM Mass, exiting down the center aisle and wondered, “where are they going and what are they doing”?

The Catechumens and Candidates are not yet fully initiated Catholics and cannot partake in the Eucharist. So they are “Dismissed” to a private area to discuss what they just heard. The Dismissal Session focuses on a greater understanding of the Readings and Homily just proclaimed. They are asked to reflect on the Readings and Homily and to apply the teachings to their lives. What did I hear? What does it mean to me in my life? and What changes do I need to make in my life from what I’ve heard today? This reflection and sharing takes place in the Dismissal Session. We can all ask ourselves these questions and reflect on them, especially during this upcoming Lenten Season. A new RCIA Inquiry group is forming. As a Disciple of Christ, invite someone to “Come and See” what our Catholic Faith is about. There is no commitment in the early phase of the Process. Contact the Faith Formation Office: 805 526-5513. As their Church Family, please continue to pray for our Catechumens and Candidates as they discern their readiness to become Fully Initiated Catholics.

Join us on Thursdays at 7:00pm -Room 8 of the school.

PRAYER CENACLE Join us every Tuesday at 6:15pm-7:00pm

in the chapel to pray for our Priests. My Immaculate Heart is glorified by you when

you multiply everywhere cenacles of prayer made with me. (427k, June 23, 1990)

Multiply in every part of the world, the cenacles of prayer which I have asked of you, like torches lit in the night, like sure points of reference, like shelters needed and sought for.

Did you Know?

The “Battered Child Syndrome” may indicate abuse “Battered Child Syndrome” is a clinical term professionals use to refer to children experiencing recurrent physical abuse from a caretaker over an extended period of time. Signs of a battered child can include repeated bruising or bruising in unusual places, broken bones, scratches, and other injuries. Even if you do not see physical abuse happening, such injuries may be signs that a child is in danger in his or her own home. You should report any suspicious injuries or symptoms to a local child protective services agency — that report could save a child’s life.
